Sad that a year after this video the company completely imploded and laid everyone off. I feel bad for the employees interviewed here. Looks like Rivenstone will never be delivered.
You should look into Level52/Broken Anvil imploding. This video was a big influence on my decision to backerkit their Rivenstone project. You thought you were stealing their painting secrets, it turns out they were stealing our money. 😂
This is a great video! It's hard to keep track of the huge amount of games coming out but being able to see the people behind it makes me much more excited to support them and grab some models! Thanks for the video Jon
At 7:13 - if you, like me, don't have and/or like enamel washes, try Gouache. Instead of it being soluble with mineral spirits, its soluble & reactivated by water. It works very much the same and drys ultra-matte. Also, you can use it for pinwashing, if you wet the area first and then put thinned Gouache in the recess. Oh, yeah - it can be thinned with water. I say it's one of those overlooked products by minipainters.
i actually really like the art style for rivenstone. im usually way more picky about the more cartoony style, but i really think theyve nailed it the right way. i want to see these guys get big because i would love to see rivenstone on the shelves.
Super work brother!...loved the Q & A. I can't help wonder if the aspiring dolphin trainer was secretly referring to the GW Global Events Manager. Probably not.
videos like these make me fall in love with companies i never considered before or even knew about. that mini you worked on was insanely clean. the detail was sick. i have to check out more.
Hey - given the speculation about fraudulent activities based on BAM kickstarters, how do you feel about being connected? I backed a campaign based on this very video and it seems that Chris and the BAM owners were scamming people out of their hard earned money.
Broken Anvil miniatures is bankrupt and scammed multiple people out of their money. Very suspicious for a company to grow this much this fast. Very shady business being done at the top.
This was really an awesome video! Love the paintjob on the dwarf and all the interactions with the staff at broken anvil seemed so nice. We really got a great community!
Man, this really is my dream job, I'd love to one day work with a company like this, whether as a painter or not. Thank you for giving us such a great insight to this side of the mini painting world.
Great vid - thanks Jon... want to have some fun with the Dirty Down, heat the model with a drier a bit first, it really accelerates the drying and effects.
Ok. You almost have me ready to try oil washes, but here’s my hangup. Lots of UA-camrs talk about color schemes dealing with base coats, but never about shades/washes. Other than just brown or just black, how do you choose the oil colors you use for the wash? This could apply to acrylic washes too. I generally just put dark green on green and dark violet over purples, but that doesn’t really add the depth of color I love on your models. I assume there’s no perfect answer except experimentation, but the magenta on skin from the previous video was an awesome example…Maybe would could have some more of your fav combinations.
So much of it is personal taste + experimentation. There's some basic rules - skin tones are ruddy, they have reds in them somewhere - but mostly you gotta figure out what works for you and the hues and tones you like. One painter might choose to shade a violet cloak with maroon, another with navy blue. You might do it with a heavy green! It's just taste.
Awesome video. We'll always take more behind the scenes videos of things I'm very into! thx Jon! I subbed to their Angelic Wrath a few months ago. Love their stuff!
I would love this kind of video with GW. "What's your favorite thing about your job?" - "Oh, it's absolutely rising prices like mad for no reason for stoneage kits."
I wanted to see the payment flow of the new Super Thanks thing. Neat. Also, agree with a few others in the comments that the disclosure isn't clear enough in this video.
Great video! I never heard about about Siocast before and i love the concept. I must say however that also in traditional injection moulding, almost all material can be recycled (plastic) as well.
I suppose what they're saying is the off cuts stay at broken anvil and actually get recycled, wheras most gw sprue is stuck at someones house/in a normal bin
@@byebyebuy always thought GW are incredibly wasteful but it's not worth the extra cost to have stuff picked off the sprue, I know they used to throw away alot of miscast sprues too when they could cut off what is cast properly and sell them on and make a ton more money bits sellers already do this and I assume they're still just dumping miscasts.
Thanks for doing this. Makes me even happier that I backed the Kickstarter at one of the higher tiers. Hopefully they will be able to journey to a con on the east coast so I can meet some of them in person.
I am curious I got some Bones figures and they are some strange plastic that Army Painters spray paint won't dry on is that something that could happen with the Sio Cast plastic?
The only Reaper models that are Siocast are the Bones USA line, they are a dark gray in color. Regardless of the material, it may need a quick washing to get the mould release off
Their Painters using Golden SoFlat is amazing!!! Does Golden Know that minature folks are into their paints? John! Go visit Golden and let them know (:
It's a great product for high-end mini painting but that application hasn't come up in the SoFlat marketing yet. I do wonder if they'll acknowledge it [though I reckon if they expand the paint line to chromium oxide green (for goblin green bases) and unbleached titanium (for bone/ivory), that'll be a clue]
Its always nice to see an episode that isnt about a GW product haha. Was I the only one who found the mic tremendously quiet? I pumped the volume to full and could still barely hear it.
Well shoot! I live about an hour south of Renton, had I known you guys were coming out I would have offered to meet you, next time you come to WA lemmie know!
how is enamel different than oil? like how is streak n grime different than oil paint + mineral spirits? you add spirits to enamel as well and they both reactivate, but it was mentioned that enamel looks dirtier than oils?
It's so awesome to get insight into a great company like broken anvil and I'm loving that speed paint scheme! Def going to be doing some of my own flag googling
I think no matter what industry you work in, if you go far enough you will eventually end up sitting at a computer answering emails for a large part of your day 😂
Well as I have just started collecting Orcs, cannot see how this would be of any use to me but it was an interesting video - so thanks for sharing what you gleaned to us mere mortals.
Rows and rows of resin printers! I can't tell you how many times people freak out about them in facebook groups, building little huts around them with massive amounts of ventilation leading outdoors. I know they aren't running here, but the fumes from a printer aren't going to kill you as you walk past them.
Cautiously optimistic about this game. Didn't back it because I've been burned too many times for "the next big miniatures thing" but I think a local store will have some on hand to check out. Sadly a lot of these games never really take off because people are too entrenched in other games.
Thanks for this fascinating video ! It answers questions so many of us are wondering about Good to see creative people putting their efforts together to create even more awesomeness ! This salamander folk is pretty cute, it's becoming very tempting to get a 3D printer.... ;)
@ninjon I’m tempted to start getting some of the soflat series, but currently I use Vallejo game colour as a white primer Could the SoFlat be used as a brush on primer?
These folks seem like a company I can get behind, for sure. Will we be able to order these models and this game directly from them as opposed to Kickstarter any time soon?
With all these videos involving travel, is it the beginning of a series where Jon travels to assorted US/Canada based mini companies for behind the scenes (except the WoTC machine, since their security is 'not friendly')
Epic model that dwarf. Checked the website. Shame they all 3d printable 😔 be class if could buy these individually... seems to be the way now. But a good printer and computer so expensive 🙁 Keep up the great Videos man. Loved it. 🤘

Great showcase of a small business, clearly run by people who love the hobby. Hope to see more of this sort of content - I love it! :D

I agree. I bought myself a cheap gouache set months ago from Michaels and it works great.
Oh gosh that sounds great and I've never even heard of it! Gonna have to check that out
Thanks for the heads up , being new to the hobby this helps loads.
i actually really like the art style for rivenstone. im usually way more picky about the more cartoony style, but i really think theyve nailed it the right way. i want to see these guys get big because i would love to see rivenstone on the shelves.

Love a behind the scenes, very interesting stuff! And I didn't know much about this company so even better! 😁
videos like these make me fall in love with companies i never considered before or even knew about. that mini you worked on was insanely clean. the detail was sick. i have to check out more.
Hey - given the speculation about fraudulent activities based on BAM kickstarters, how do you feel about being connected? I backed a campaign based on this very video and it seems that Chris and the BAM owners were scamming people out of their hard earned money.
You should really update this video now that Broken Anvil has failed to deliver and scammed all their customers.
Broken Anvil miniatures is bankrupt and scammed multiple people out of their money. Very suspicious for a company to grow this much this fast. Very shady business being done at the top.
No rip on Jon but this video sure hasn't aged well. If anyone knows what's going on with this company, sheesh
Love this video. Helps the community get to know an awesome company and the dwarf turned out fantastic!
2:08 that's a Lord Shax helmet! Nice.
Great video man!
This was really an awesome video! Love the paintjob on the dwarf and all the interactions with the staff at broken anvil seemed so nice. We really got a great community!
I've heard Broken Anvil has shutdown. Looked like a promising company.
I like the structure of your videos wherein you tell stories and at the same time teach viewers how to paint and slay the gray. Keep it!
Absolutely awesome video. The miniatures are beautifully detailed and the company sounds awesome in the business of creative hobbies.
Great video! I loved the mix of painting tips and documentary of broken anvil. Kudos man!
Thanks for this awesome video, great to see the people behind the models, makes me want a few just to try and paint myself.
Best start to a video. Really cool behind the scenes!
That was a really fun video, and that dwarf looks sick! Those Broken Anvil peeps seem like a cool crew, too!
Awesome video. It's great to see the people behind the scenes. I'm envious they can follow their passions
What a dream! Getting a behind the scenes look at a miniatures company AND having BBQ with the staff 😎
I'm a newb at painting but I really enjoy it. I love learning new techniques. Those stones in the backpack look AMAZING!
This vid aged like fine wine.
Turns out the red flags were all there on how to NOT run a successful small business.
They scaled up way too fast.
Man, this really is my dream job, I'd love to one day work with a company like this, whether as a painter or not. Thank you for giving us such a great insight to this side of the mini painting world.
Totally does seem like an awesome job
I have to say the Rivenstone stuff looks fantastic. BA Crew seems like a fantastic bunch of peeps - I wish them all the success in world.
Great vid - thanks Jon... want to have some fun with the Dirty Down, heat the model with a drier a bit first, it really accelerates the drying and effects.
Jordan Lamb seems like a very chill guy
This was really cool. I would love more looks inside the industry.
Thanks for the content dude. Those painting tips are very useful. Looking forward to playing with those techniques. Cheers!
I enjoy your videos alot. Perfect to have running while im painting
interesting to see the painters mostly use so-flat paints. Have to get some of those and try them out.
Oh wow that miniature is freaking gorgeous! Both the sculpt itself and your paintjob on it Jon :)
Love love LOVE this video! As someone who is striving to achieve a similar profession, this is just fuel to my fire!
Can't wait for Rivenstone. I hope it comes to full release soon. I love their dwarves.

Fingers crossed Rivenstone gets consistently pushed by UA-cam creators because the gameplay is great and I'd love to see the game become popular.
I like how everyone at the barbeque looks like metalheads. Good people.
I love those guys, I backed the game and bought some digital files from them just because I saw them in your, Dana Howls and 52 Miniatures videos
That looks great dude! Their printers sound amazing!
I just signed up to these guys because of your recommendation! I'm in LOVE with them!
Thanks!
I wanted to see the payment flow of the new Super Thanks thing. Neat.
Also, agree with a few others in the comments that the disclosure isn't clear enough in this video.
Darn it Jon, you're going to make me buy Rivenstone minis! Cool to see more of the inner workings of such a cool company.
@@byebyebuy Thanks for pointing out. Didn‘t think of that.

What white were you using to paint that dwarf? That coverage is insane
You still amaze me!! On to the grey
Thanks for doing this. Makes me even happier that I backed the Kickstarter at one of the higher tiers. Hopefully they will be able to journey to a con on the east coast so I can meet some of them in person.

Proud Patreon subscriber! Love the style of their minis.
Thanks Jon. I wish I could work at a place like this.
Its always nice to see an episode that isnt about a GW product haha.
Was I the only one who found the mic tremendously quiet? I pumped the volume to full and could still barely hear it.
I'd like to know about the 3D sculptors and what kind of training they got to do this job.
Great video!! I'm in the pledge manager for when the next budget step comes by and will be grabbing a set of Rivenstone for sure!
Thanks for the video man ! I really enjoyed it
Well shoot! I live about an hour south of Renton, had I known you guys were coming out I would have offered to meet you, next time you come to WA lemmie know!

The place is full of animals: Bee, Lamb, Trout, Myers... okay, maybe not Myers.
But I was amused that their last names having a theme.
Love a good dwarf and that looks sick
Well as I have just started collecting Orcs, cannot see how this would be of any use to me but it was an interesting video - so thanks for sharing what you gleaned to us mere mortals.

Backed them on kickstarter, can't wait for the fulfillment.
@ninjon I’m tempted to start getting some of the soflat series, but currently I use Vallejo game colour as a white primer
Could the SoFlat be used as a brush on primer?
Jon, did you apply a varnish before the streaking grime or nah?
I've never tried that technique
Slumber Party massacre and a Demons shirt, love seeing fellow horror nerds out there!
Broken Anvil's motto - "You can wear whatever color you want as long as it's black"
Thank you , Jon .
00:38 that guy talking to Scot (Chris) just looks like Scot with a beard and more beer
That was such a fantastic first question.
Feels like 15 mn of straight marketing
"It's difficult to describe what we do to people." ... ' We're a [tabletop] board game company.' That was easy.
Ouch, this did not age well
This seems like a good company, I think I will support them.
Whoops... hope you didn't get scammed too badly.
This was a great video! Thanks so much!
I love the way these guys look, i'll definitely check them out
10yr old me had never heard of D&D/minis. Course answering machines were a new thing so pretty much a look of 'wtf are you saying'.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍

This was awesome to see. If only everyone could follow their dreams and do what they love.
But Jon, the fun thing IS the painting.
I tend to listen to Trapped under plastic in my commute and just music while painting...
Epic model that dwarf. Checked the website. Shame they all 3d printable 😔 be class if could buy these individually... seems to be the way now. But a good printer and computer so expensive 🙁
Keep up the great Videos man. Loved it. 🤘
They haven't finished up their Kickstarter, because no backers have gotten their physical minis yet. From 2 years ago.
Three simple steps to a great looking mini.
Top résumé (CV) tip for working at Anvil: Get massive holes in your ear lobes.
Great video but was kind of hoping you would say the thing that left the greatest impression on you was the hot sauce!
So, I see a bunch of 3d printers back there, what brand do they use most and prefere? Finding something that works right, most of time, is important.
How many times have you licked the tip of your brush when that „pretty toxic“ paint was on it? I assume it has been more than zero times, right?
Any "completely new painter" videos coming?
I would like a clip of Spenscer.
