I agree. Most people seem to consider the Royal Albert version the best, but this version to me sounds much richer vocal wise. Devin's vocal timbre changed considerably after starting the DTP due to age, but in this show it sounds like a blend of those two eras. I mean come on, listen to the "You are" line at 6:41, he doesn't sing it that way anymore, with that kind of grit. Its awesome
Osoch i came to say the exact thing with almost the same words haha. I have always seen the “ you are “ part as an example of the grit he used to have , which adds a lot more to the performance than his actual óperistic vocal style .
@@xobrasxx Exactly. His opera style is very good no doubt, and it does work flawlessly in many songs. However I always felt Deadhead very raw in emotion, a painful song, and IMO singing it in opera style makes it too polished, I feel it doesn't transmit that emotion as well
I am aware that Devin is never gonna read this because this isn't even his official channel, but... i need to let this out. Thank you Devin. You and your music mean so much to me, i've been trying so hard to feel better throughout the past year and nothing seems to help except for your music. I have never heard something that affects me in this way before, nothing at all, and i've browsed through every reddit discussion and read every snob comment telling me that X band is better, Y band is more technical, Z band is more thoughtful... the truth is that you can't quantify/measure feelings, especially when they are this intense and... just irrational. I don't want something cerebral, calculated, deliberately convoluted... i want something sincere, genuine, and simple, and your music, to me, has always been predicated on such traits, at least your early catalogue, in spite of all of the chaos, the madness, the anger, the fear, the ugliness... there is still an overarching emotional truth to all of them.
+canoestothemoon He is literally the only vocalist I know of, especially within the harsher side of metal, that has gotten BETTER with age. I think it has to do with an excellent technique combined with cleaner living since he gave up the drugs/alcohol/smoking. It's ridiculous how insane he has gotten, even since this show.
I don't want to be a bummer but I feel like his voice has some melodyne on it in this vid, raw cellphone vids of this gig weren't as godly as this is :(
Cell phone mics are horrible at picking up loud music properly. Very few raw cellphone videos of live shows are even decent sounding. The best are all acoustic. Tuska is LOUD, overwhelms cell phones completely.
I don't usually post comments on videos, but i need in this one. I met this God Sir with Soilwork, and, one day, i found this video from Tuska. It was amazing. I spent this whole week listening to his live stuff. And this song, plus Supercrush and Numbered are just art. Fucking art. He is a god. No doubt about it.
Oh my fucking god! This version sounds SO good! Like the version from years ago!! HIS VOICE TRANSCENDS SPACE AND TIME ITSELF! Look at how he summons those emotions! This has ALWAYS been my favorite song of his since the first time I heard it.
This just might be the greatest performance of any song ever recorded. I'm a huge Devin fan, so I'm pretty biased, but there's something captured in this performance that just screams something like beauty, or peace, or something like that. I dunno, but I've listened to this song for years of my life and it always has the same impact.
It's been a week since I discovered Devin Townsend. Now I can't listen to anything else. I was going to see BTBAM and DTP because of BTBAM, but now I'm super hyped about seeing this fine gentleman live. I hope he plays this song at the (Dallas) show. :)
I've seen him live 3 times in the past 2 years. He's so fantastic. The best live show that I've ever seen (aside from local bands; always great to see your buds rocking out!)
You will do man, seen him four times and all of them were definitely some of the best shows iv'e ever seen, best front man ever in my opinion. I know i will definitely die happy from seeing this fine specimen of a man lol
Last time DT played a show here, i went with a buddy who is a huge Strapping fan and otherwise pretty much listens to death metal ONLY. So when i introduced him to the DTP records i expected the worst from him but i called him up and asked him what he thought and he was like "this is amazing, this stuff is brilliant!!!" And i said "But it's not death metal" and he said "It's fucking Devin Townsend, and thats all that matters". :D
Seen Devin twice, both times very different, always so metal, always so funny, always so warm atmosphere when Dev is onstage! If i'd have to pick that one guy who is the no.1 man/woman in the whole music industry, it would be Mr. Townsend, a true genious in music, singing and playing guitar, and a very nice guy overall, those two things usually never come hand to hand!
Yeah bro u right! Been trying to find this again for a long time now. As far as I remember it was posted on the Peavey UA-cam channel, but for some reason we can't find it anymore 😢
Cool. When Devin screams @ 6:43 he suddenly looks like Bruce Willis for a moment. Now you know that you are a badass singer, when you can change into Bruce Willis while you're singing!!! :)
@blackroseimmortal he played keys for Strapping Young Lad's album Alien as a session musician and then Devin like him so much they've been playing music together ever since :D
this performance is like night in day compared to the synchestra dvd. it's ten times the epicness plus devin's voice has improved a lot since those days
ACTUAL ANSWER: Strapping is done with. While Devin was 95% the driving force behind that project, it was a band with 4 members who were equally essential to it's existence. Hardly the same as the "solo" work that Dev has been putting out for years and years, whether it be under his name alone, The Devin Townsend Band or Devin Townsend Project. Seeing a group perform a Strapping song other than the 4 members who made up SYL would be just silly. Although, Dev has played an acoustic ver. of "Love".
Even the crowd clapped IN TIME (almost never happens), that's how awesome the song is.

Wrote my comment then saw this Haha, my bad
"bars a bitch for sure, but any point you'd like though pick a tempo"
His best vocal performance of Deadhead, even better than the studio one.
I agree. Most people seem to consider the Royal Albert version the best, but this version to me sounds much richer vocal wise. Devin's vocal timbre changed considerably after starting the DTP due to age, but in this show it sounds like a blend of those two eras.

Royal Albert Hall
That tonal scream @ 6:58 is just fucking insane
fukn nailed it!
saber wolfe i cant stop listening to that scream
it was absolutely no effort for him here, nowadays it's like he's on a deathbed with those screams lol
I am aware that Devin is never gonna read this because this isn't even his official channel, but... i need to let this out.

Beautiful words bro. I think most of us who love Dev feel the same way. so thanks for those beautiful words
i just cant get over how good this is, i found Devin 2 days ago, AMAZING
"Why is there a fly landing on me? He knows why!"
We all know why, Devin!
I don't :(
Cos Devin's hot shit... in the best way possible.
3:35 he literally sounds like a force of nature... best he's ever sounded live.
+canoestothemoon He is literally the only vocalist I know of, especially within the harsher side of metal, that has gotten BETTER with age. This is my favorite show of DT. SICK!
canoestothemoon check out their performance in polodiv. That’s his best on this song
I don't usually post comments on videos, but i need in this one. I met this God Sir with Soilwork, and, one day, i found this video from Tuska. It was amazing. I love Devin, because he is the least poser-y dude in metal. Mustard shirt, white khakis, track shoes, classic Devy
In my home country a seagull shitting on your head is a sign of good luck.. No joke
Those drums sound beautiful!
I wouldn't say this is the greatest song ever written, but it's up there.
I was about to cry while i listened to this song. I really respect this guy. He is such a genius i have seen
Oh my fucking god! This version sounds SO good! Like the version from years ago!! HIS VOICE TRANSCENDS SPACE AND TIME ITSELF! Look at how he summons those emotions! This has ALWAYS been my favorite song of his since the first time I heard it.

I can't help but smile when I listen to Devin Townsend.
Done it. You wont regret it. Very accessible too. He hung around after a show in Sydney for 2 hours just mingling with fans.
This is the best recording of this song he ever did.
It's been a week since I discovered Devin Townsend. Now I can't listen to anything else. I was going to see BTBAM and DTP because of BTBAM, but now I'm super hyped about seeing this fine gentleman live. I hope he plays this song at the (Dallas) show. :)
I've widdled my bucket list down to one,... See this man perform live and I'll die very happy!!
awesome tune, big thx Zakk for sharing!!!!!Devin rules!!!
if devin townsend was a superhero his name would be CAPTAIN EPIC!!! the sound he has is simply massive.
Thank you so much for uploading this! That was one of the best days in my life and this video takes me back there and then.
his best song
Adam Gerber One of his best songs ;)
+Adam D.G I would probably say funeral or deep peace
mine would have to be death of music the build up is insane
I personally tend to prefer his wilder journeys like Deconstruction, Planet of the apes or Borderlands but Deadhead is amazing as well.
I've seen him live 3 times in the past 2 years.
He's so fantastic. The best live show that I've ever seen (aside from local bands; always great to see your buds rocking out!)
Most entrancing live show I have ever had the privilege to witness!!
devin's vocals are something else......
I think I'm most impressed how in time the crowd is with the clapping
my favorite singer!!!!!
I was lucky enough to see this live. Incredible song, gives me goosebumps every time I hear this.
This is my favourite song of all time forever.
Devin always makes me cry but in a good way!!
What a prayer. giant prayer
Fantastic live version
he is AMAZING live
this is truely an amazing song
This has to be the greatest live performance ever!!!! I wish I could see them live!!!! COME TO LOS ANGELES!
Oh, and I have seen him 3 times and suggest to anyone even the slightest bit interested in his music to go see him live. The man is like no other!
This was Devins finest concert.
Definately worth the watch! I saw him at Bloodstock last year and really wanna see him again. Such an incredible guy! :)
perfection personified
amazing
Goosebumps.
tout simplement magistral !
This is a great version of Deadhead, but the Royal Albert Hall version is king!
Saw this genious of a god last year in Sweden. Will see him live again this November..... TWICE even! I can die even more happy after that ^^
OMG !!! Des frissons...
Magical
You will do man, seen him four times and all of them were definitely some of the best shows iv'e ever seen, best front man ever in my opinion. I know i will definitely die happy from seeing this fine specimen of a man lol
That's an amazing line-up.
I reckon I didn't really know the true meaning of epic until I heard Deadhead for the first time.
Last time DT played a show here, i went with a buddy who is a huge Strapping fan and otherwise pretty much listens to death metal ONLY. So when i introduced him to the DTP records i expected the worst from him but i called him up and asked him what he thought and he was like "this is amazing, this stuff is brilliant!!!" That intro is freakin awesome!!!
Retinal Circus.. Cant wait !
Devin is the man!
Genio...
I want that exact guitar Devin is using, even with the DTP logo on it....and that sound.....its a perfect wall of colossal guitar sound. beautiful.
He was in Tuska2022, I missed it. He was in Helsinki again last week, I missed that also. I suck.
Christ I can't frek'n wait to see these guys play tomorrow night at the Metro, Sydney!
This Song is Awesome! Pumped & Psych'd!!! XD
iv seen him live he was amazing
Who the fuck accidentally hit the dislike? How could anyone purposefully hit the dislike button on Devin Townsend.
Great voice.
I love this song
Come to chile please
someone should make a compilation of all the live versions of the "you save me" C5 scream at the end of this song.. Never fails to give me chills
Chills.
Omfg. That perfect moment at 6:55... I just love that guy.
Thank you for uploading this. Fucking love this song.
This, kind gentlemen, is Devin GODsend.
Now that's more like it!

Flawless fucking performance!
This is awesome. There was a 20 min. version or so with 3-4 songs in YT earlier. Hope it's not been taken away.
Yeah bro u right! Been trying to find this again for a long time now. As far as I remember it was posted on the Peavey UA-cam channel, but for some reason we can't find it anymore 😢
I really want to check out Tuska sometime! \m/
Cool. When Devin screams @ 6:43 he suddenly looks like Bruce Willis for a moment. Now you know that you are a badass singer, when you can change into Bruce Willis while you're singing!!! :)

this performance is like night in day compared to the synchestra dvd. it's ten times the epicness plus devin's voice has improved a lot since those days
I was there in, man that Ziltoid so fuckin EPIC. This also.
Do keep listening. He's done many very emotionally effective albums: Ocean Machine, Infinity, Terria, Ki...
Found out too late that Devin was going to perform in Tuska, would definately have gone there just to see him perform.
fucking awesome. !
That silver burst PRS is farkin HUGE!!

Gonna see him live in Denmark, November 2nd :D
If he'd played this when I saw them I would've been an emotional wreck.
(Ending) "Thank you. Why is there a fly landing on me? He knows why." -Devin Townsend \m/
The cleans at 7:12 are from another universe
I was. I can die happy.
Every time I listen to this song I just want to sit around doing nothing. The only thing my mind can do is reflect.
Why wasn't I here? I could of died happy.. =(
fucking awesome, tanks for the video! :)
Он просто нереально крут! Охуенный чел и музыкант!!!
When he toured with Gojira, oh my god, it was fucking incredible.
