      Comedy used to be equal opportunity. SNL used to rip on whoever was in office. No more...which is why no one watches any more. Ax grinding is simply not funny. Jimmy Fallon's monologue regularly contains slams on Trump, who's no longer in office. Meanwhile, Biden creates comedy gold on a daily basis, and today's comedians don't seem to notice. No wonder Babylon Bee is so much funnier than the Onion...they pick on EVERYONE!

    The lack of an "enemy" wasn't a DoD tactic, it was marketing. If they had named an enemy in the script, they would have limited their market. He's "against" education and doctors? That seems like a strawman statement for sure. I'm sure you cherry picked and misinterpreted something he said on that one....but by all means prove it with some quotes IN context.
      How does the military keep Russia and China "in check"? Maybe nukes do, but theirs keep America's in check too. Russia invaded Ukraine. They didn't care about the US military. China is continuing to BUILD it's military BECAUSE of the size of the US military. So you're wrong there too.
      And yeah....about the only thing you got right was Bill not having up to date info about the effectiveness of the F35, but even a lot of that is speculation based on reports of test pilots flying the thing. Hardly unbiased sources of information. Time will tell on that.

      It depends on troop levels. I worked as a DOD contractor from 2014-2020 and in most cases made less money than the federal employees I was working alongside.
      When troops levels were low like in 2003 and 2001 as the two wars started, contractors could demand significantly higher money as military personnel levels were way lower due to the cutbacks of the Clinton Administration. As the troop levels rose, the contractor salaries decreased over time. I remember a recruiter calling me up in 2018 asking if I was interested in a $90k salary position in Afghanistan. I informed him I made more than that as an E-5 when I deployed to the same location back in 2011 when you added in benefits, allowances, base pay, and hazardous duty and hardship pay.
      I get that it's trendy to "hate" on contractors but the truth is they fill critical gaps in a lot of areas and bring expertise that the military can't generate on its own. You're not going to convince an IT specialist to join the military when he can make 3x the salary in the private sector, the only way you get him to work on your stuff is to pay him accordingly.

    I have to respectfully disagree with Maher's argument at the end. The real reason why there is no named villain in "Top Gun: Maverick" is not because we can't agree as a country, but rather because the USA no longer has a de facto monopoly on the market for the film industry. They have to worry about Europe, China, Japan, and Russia among others to sell their films. By naming Russia or China, they would be closing themselves to a major world market.

      except for the fact the studio basically said fuck you to China and left in the Jacket scene with the Taiwanese flag. It's true when they shot the film it was that attitude and about not alienating foreign markets...and quite rightly I think. We should be promoting dialog and openness with even the worst countries. If we all close off then this is what we get. Anyway, it's now swinging the other way where western production companies are starting to turn their backs on the Chinese market simply because it's way too much of a hassle dealing with their (purposely) ambiguous censorship guidelines.

    Even the female pilot didn't have some storyline where she has a chip on her shoulder and has some woke talking point about how women can do what men can do which a typical, lesser Hollywood movie would have done. She was an elite pilot and was accepted as such and why wouldn't she be?

Critics have enjoyed all those. Some having issues doesn't speak for all. And "Maverick" doesn't really make warmongering "sexy" if you pay attention. It shows that war is stressful and scary with all that throttling, ejecting and almost blacking out stuff. It also takes away our beloved friends/relatives (Maverick's trauma after Goose's death is major plot point) and the army picks young, inexperienced pilots for a deadly mission which is not a good look. Even after Maverick's success in the mission, he doesn't get any promotion and returns to his old life.The Navy still doubts his value and probably always will in spite of his achievements. What America now has instead of actual combat experience is thousands of hours of training to fly the latest-generation technology in simulated combat in ground-based simulators, and quite a bit of air training, a lot less like real combat. Actual decorated heroes are dinosaurs of a different era. So the youth fetish (always a Hollywood staple) for once actually makes sense. Next time pay attention, Mansur.

Many people who watched the film might have no interest or prior information about what's going on in the actual US forces. My comment was all about how the FILM makes them feel and I stand by my point that in the universe the film sets, it doesn't encourage audiences to root for the navy. Next time pay attention, Allan.

    I love the editorial and i do agree with what he's saying.
    the movie's makers did go out of their way to not name who the big bad enemy is. But they left a ton of hints and crumbs to basically say it was Iran. no question about it.
    it was Iran who bought f-14's from the US back in mid 70's when the relations were good (right before the Iranian Islamic revolution at the end of that decade).
    Actually, after the US Navy retired the f-14 in 2006, it meant that Iran was the only nation left in the world who still had f-14's in their active armed forces.
    the f-14 itself is so central to the original Topgun movie, and given that the new movie obviously was trying to hit on all the nostalgia points, the obvious choice was to go for "the enemy" that had the rogue f-14's.
    you can't have a Topgun movie without the f-14. If you look at it that way, the easiest (and only) option is to have Iran as the enemy (who shall not be named).
    But yea, they had to steer clear of naming to avoid the "Islamophobic" label from the critics
    you could say the moviemakers flew right under the critics' radars on this one...

    • @Ashod00
      @Ashod00 2 роки тому

      @Marshall Williams yes that's true.
      these are a few more examples of the hints and breadcrumbs the movie had left for us. i just focused on the f14 part because i love talking about f14's.
      Honestly, i think when the movie viewer knows who "the enemy" is, even if they don't say it in the movie, it's not as frustrating as Bill is making it out to be.
      but i can imagine it (keeping the enemy mysterious in the movie) being annoying for a viewer who perhaps could not identify themselves.
      that may have come off a little arrogant but i think there's something to be said there

    Well to be honest TGM is more about nostalgia than fighting an enemy. It's nostalgia about an 80s franchise, about shooting an action film without CGI and actors actually risking their physical integrity. If Lawrence of Arabia had been shot in a sound stage instead of a real desert it would not have felt as real. And nostalgia for going to the movies. Nostalgia for the Hollywood star whose name is a film genre.

    The "enemy" in Top Gun: Maverick is CGI. That is what the audience can see and feel and appreciate like they do authentic ageless kung-fu stunt movies. It is also pushing narrative that too much reliance on technology and not enough investment in having skilled fighter pilots would be a mistake. It glorifies fighter pilots while showing that it is a difficult and dangerous calling. It is a simple movie to watch and enjoy, but it makes deeper statements by every decision the filmmakers put into it.
    The original Top Gun movie over 30 years ago also avoided naming the enemy leaving that up to audience speculation. It was a smart choice then and it was a smart choice in Maverick to do the same

      In the original movie the enemy changed from Hubris to self-doubt in the face of the tragedy brought on by Hubris.
      We are supposed to be smart enough to recognize that an action movie is a "confidence game" where we go in hot, win, win, then lose, come to terms with losing, rebuild, come back wiser and destroy the baddies that expect us to be weaker than before, when we are stronger because of we've been through hell and are now ready to really give our all to win the day.
      The reality is that most of the "great battles and wins" militarily that we celebrate and live over in movies are in the "It worked that time, and thank god it did. We''ll never do that again it was extremely dumb strategy." Also there is always a thirst for war and a hunger for a clear win. We don't get those anymore. Bill was right in calling it a recruitment video, all shiny toys and shiny boys, and the moral dilemmas being nicely sidestepped with extreme violence, for your entertainment. Are you not entertained?
      I mean we could kick Russia out of Ukraine in a blitz, and maybe we should, but we actually prefer the proxy battle. We also enjoy being the proxy for feuds among nations that have been going on for hundreds of years, figure that out. Talk about hubris. If we are not willing to vote Russia's UN Veto out, we really aren't doing much.
