I'm a Republican, and I think that Bill Maher is hilarious. This is the way humor use to be. If you want to unite Americans, be willing to laugh at both sides. Find common humor, and the levity will bring about unity.
Agree with the former -- we need to "find ... humor" in the cesspool of politics -- but disagree with the latter. The divide the big lie of "45" has caused and continues to feed likely will not close until at least my generation -- the boomers -- completely die off.

The lack of an "enemy" wasn't a DoD tactic, it was marketing. If they had named an enemy in the script, they would have limited their market. When the original came out 35 years ago, they didn't really care about the global movie market and China wasn't a power house. Now every big film is sanitized to ensure broadest appeal and ROI.
I believe the director said they cut out the enemy in post because of it could be controversial and Tom wanted the movie out a long time ago. It's smart on their part. The world really doesn't need another Red Dawn and I'm so tired of seeing American soldiers kill what look like normal citizens called terrorists.
It's Iran. 100% no question Iran. No other country has combat "ready" F-14s (left over from when America was supporting the Shah in the 70's, before the lunatics took over).
I’m a Christian and moderate and always appreciate Bill’s humor, even though his atheist tendencies take aim directly at my beliefs. But, he’s an equal-opportunity “offender” and it’s good to see so many people supporting that.
I’m still waiting for him to criticize those who believe the Democrats are the saviors of the black race when they are responsible for the Ku Klux Klan, segregation, and slavery. oh yeah… cough cough.

Honestly, I simply see Top Gun: Maverick as an authentic, fun, nostalgic action movie that gave me hope in the idea of a summer blockbuster that doesn't involve superheroes. 🤷♂️
@MrGriff305 lol....the last thing superhero movies are is imaginative. Boring black and white good vs evil plots with some fucking stupid MacGuffin that's going to "destroy everything". Yawn. And he said he liked Top Gun so I'm not sure what you're talking about there. He's "against" education and doctors? That seems like a strawman statement for sure. I'm sure you cherry picked and misinterpreted something he said on that one....but by all means prove it with some quotes IN context. How does the military keep Russia and China "in check"? Maybe nukes do, but theirs keep America's in check too. Russia invaded Ukraine. They didn't care about the US military. China is continuing to BUILD it's military BECAUSE of the size of the US military. So you're wrong there too. And yeah....about the only thing you got right was Bill not having up to date info about the effectiveness of the F35, but even a lot of that is speculation based on reports of test pilots flying the thing. Hardly unbiased sources of information. Time will tell on that.
I love Bill for his critiques of any side that acts dumb, we need more people like him and the late George Carlin in this world, no joke listen to what they say, they are one of the few public figures to bash on both left and right wing agendas that ultimately harm us all
While I don't disagree about calling them as you see them, I do think Bill's given too much attention to the Twitter left since 2020 when the other side is doing nothing short of trying to end democracy and entrench white conservative minority rule. The threats posed by extremists on the two sides are nowhere near equal.
dont give me that both sides shit. you cant say both parties have an equal amount of "harm" thats been done. bc only one party is stripping rights...demolishing democracy, inciting an insurrection, undermining our election process, blocking policies that help ppl with no substitutes, and supports a president that is literally a national security risk. lets just be real here. definitely can tell you're a republican bc you taking responsibility or owning up to your party's bullshit is nonexistent. yall refuse to have some dignity and say "i was wrong." instead you would rather wreck the entire country over your measly pride.

Given all the idiocy I had to deal with from NAVFAC San Diego when I worked in construction analytics? Norfolk office had its act together, but I came so close to saying to the San Diego one "Could I please speak to someone who's at least a lieutenant commander!?"
It depends on troop levels. I worked as a DOD contractor from 2014-2020 and in most cases made less money than the federal employees I was working alongside. When troops levels were low like in 2003 and 2001 as the two wars started, contractors could demand significantly higher money as military personnel levels were way lower due to the cutbacks of the Clinton Administration. As the troop levels rose, the contractor salaries decreased over time. I remember a recruiter calling me up in 2018 asking if I was interested in a $90k salary position in Afghanistan. I informed him I made more than that as an E-5 when I deployed to the same location back in 2011 when you added in benefits, allowances, base pay, and hazardous duty and hardship pay. I get that it's trendy to "hate" on contractors but the truth is they fill critical gaps in a lot of areas and bring expertise that the military can't generate on its own. You're not going to convince an IT specialist to join the military when he can make 3x the salary in the private sector, the only way you get him to work on your stuff is to pay him accordingly.
enlisted ranks do the majority of hands on work and are the least paid also they don't have/can't afford lobbyists to advocate for them like mil. contractors do follow the $ it's that simple

I was waxing nostalgic as Bill appeared to return to his more liberal views as he criticized the defense spending. Then he brought it back around nicely and left no side untouched as he continued his critic. The bit about the alien invasion was hysterical, witty and yet soberingly spot on....bravo.
Well, with respect, and IMHO, spending over a trillion dollars on the F35 after it has been shown to be riddled with problems is worth a some criticism. If the USAF quietly admits it is a failure, why are our tax dollars still buying the darned thing?

It was actually a good move calling it " the enemy" it avoided any politcal scandal. Because you know everyone would be putting in the 2 cents if they named a country as some racist, or what ever "ist" they could come up with.
Also, they knew that it really was irrelevant: aren't the Americans used to always being at war with some far away country whose inhabitants don't matter?
@@jonathandavis8599 It matters to leftists. They need to clarify if the enemy is actually the enemy or if their domestic political opposition is the real enemy, as the media has conditioned them to believe.
I'm sure the real reason is that they just want to sell the movie to all countries, especially to china. If they would name a concrete enemy, many countries would ban the movie because of their political interests and connections to that enemy or rather their political position to what that enemy stands for.

@@ivanvoronov3871 The F22 is outrageously expensive. And actually quite old. The F35 has a LOT of new technologies that are not available on the F22 (although some will be retrofitted eventually) at almost half the price. Measuring a 5th generation fighter performance by the 4th generation metric doesn't provide an accurate picture. The F22 has superior flying characteristics but they are unlikely to come into play in the modern air battle for a 5th gen fighter. Not to mention that the entire paradigm is shifting towards the drone warfare. They are cheaper, more difficult to detect, do not endanger the pilot, and you can afford enough of them to overwhelm the air defense of the enemy.
I had the same idea for an alien invasion movie four years ago; when the aliens attack, they would be stunned by how fast we humans would sell each other out to to try to cozy up to the aliens wiping us out.

No one was scared that the new person was going to subvert democracy and become a communist or a fascist or a socialist. Each POTUS was a patriot that loved the USA and led it that way. GOP and DEMs both wanted border security and claimed to want a wall built but never seemed to get around to it. Our Congress and Senate used to be adults that took their leadership as a diplomatic role. Now they are all activists. We need our leaders to calm people down and refuse to do moronic things instead of now where they are the ones encouraging moronic things. We need our country back.

More than anything, people love TGM because it's uplifting, one of the few movies that leave people feeling better about themselves afterward. It celebrates excellence in a culture that's currently too hell-bent on the negatives and failures. I doubt it has anything to do with politics.
Conservatives loved it. Ben Shapiro's review of it was pretty much what Bill just said: it reaffirmed America's military predominance in upholding the world order and defeating its enemies.

@@CH-zc8qx There's no mystery as to why conservatives like it. Bill's monologue wasn't directed to conservatives, or even the public at large, but the so-called liberal critics who gave it high scores.
I have to respectfully disagree with Maher's argument at the end. The real reason why there is no named villain in "Top Gun: Maverick" is not because we can't agree as a country, but rather because the USA no longer has a de facto monopoly on the market for the film industry. They have to worry about Europe, China, Japan, and Russia among others to sell their films. By naming Russia or China, they would be closing themselves to a major world market.
except for the fact the studio basically said fuck you to China and left in the Jacket scene with the Taiwanese flag. It's true when they shot the film it was that attitude and about not alienating foreign markets...and quite rightly I think. We should be promoting dialog and openness with even the worst countries. If we all close off then this is what we get. Anyway, it's now swinging the other way where western production companies are starting to turn their backs on the Chinese market simply because it's way too much of a hassle dealing with their (purposely) ambiguous censorship guidelines.
The middle eastern Islamic countries are still a go to place for movies' villains--the population is interchangeable-Syrian, Afgan, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, and even Saudi. Not a problem casting villains from that part of the world.
Audience and critics liked this movie bc it was well written, well acted, and devoid of all the usual hollywood identity politics. Simple. Also, not every American hates themselves.
People enjoyed Top Gun: Maverick because it was highly entertaining and uplifting and stayed true to the Maverick character. It was also somewhat patriotic which many Americans are yearning for in this increasingly divided country. And it portrayed our top military pilots as confident, brave, and competent which I'm sure they are. Even the female pilot didn't have some storyline where she has a chip on her shoulder and has some woke talking point about how women can do what men can do which a typical, lesser Hollywood movie would have done. She was an elite pilot and was accepted as such and why wouldn't she be?
Yeah, unfortunately thats the problem.....Americans ARE NOT patriotic, they just claim to be. If americans were patriotic the country WOULDNT BE DIVIDED. Americans are phony and love to scream about how they love their country......yet pack in to walmart and made amazon a trillion dollar company for what?......to fill their homes with products MADE IN CHINA. Everyone in the military is automatically thanked "for their service" even when they fake injuries and lie for PTSD entitlements. Government is known for their corruption and while americans love to cry about it, they refuse to change it.. Its really quite pathetic....good thing there are movies like maverick though......to help americans with their "yearning"
The "enemy" in Top Gun: Maverick is CGI. That is what the audience can see and feel and appreciate like they do authentic ageless kung-fu stunt movies. It is also pushing narrative that too much reliance on technology and not enough investment in having skilled fighter pilots would be a mistake. It glorifies fighter pilots while showing that it is a difficult and dangerous calling. It is a simple movie to watch and enjoy, but it makes deeper statements by every decision the filmmakers put into it. The original Top Gun movie over 30 years ago also avoided naming the enemy leaving that up to audience speculation. It was a smart choice then and it was a smart choice in Maverick to do the same
...its called fill-in your top five enemies... hmm, my next door neighbors, the rude lady at the drive thru register... 😂..this type of screen play writing is sooo old and sooooo overly cooked...it's laughable
They should have extended the whole 'downed pilot' sequence IMO, showing some survival situations, some action, and combat hand-to-hand or weapon. Fighter pilots as with all special operators go through SERE training and to me that's the most interesting. Too much of the movie was as you say techno-porn.
In the original movie the enemy changed from Hubris to self-doubt in the face of the tragedy brought on by Hubris. We are supposed to be smart enough to recognize that an action movie is a "confidence game" where we go in hot, win, win, then lose, come to terms with losing, rebuild, come back wiser and destroy the baddies that expect us to be weaker than before, when we are stronger because of we've been through hell and are now ready to really give our all to win the day. The reality is that most of the "great battles and wins" militarily that we celebrate and live over in movies are in the "It worked that time, and thank god it did. We''ll never do that again it was extremely dumb strategy." Also there is always a thirst for war and a hunger for a clear win. We don't get those anymore. Bill was right in calling it a recruitment video, all shiny toys and shiny boys, and the moral dilemmas being nicely sidestepped with extreme violence, for your entertainment. Are you not entertained? I mean we could kick Russia out of Ukraine in a blitz, and maybe we should, but we actually prefer the proxy battle. We also enjoy being the proxy for feuds among nations that have been going on for hundreds of years, figure that out. Talk about hubris. If we are not willing to vote Russia's UN Veto out, we really aren't doing much. I haven't watched a TC movie for 20 years, and I'm not about to start now.
I loved Top Gun Maverick because I wore out the tape on the original as a kid, and my kid got to see this one with me in theaters. She was completely mesmerized, the action was awesome, the cheese thick and the perfect level of tasty and coming out of 2 years of covid hell and national anxiety it just felt good. Despite calls from French leaders for its neighbors to “buy European,” the F-35 has consistently beat out homegrown candidates in the most recent fighter jet competitions, including the Dassault Rafale, Saab’s JAS 39 Gripen, and the Eurofighter Typhoon developed by Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo. This wave of success comes down to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter’s high rate of interoperability with allies and partners, particularly in NATO, along with its guaranteed upgrade road map. But more than anything, they noted, the jet arrived in Europe with pristine timing, as multiple nations were itching to refresh their fleets by the end of the decade. More European nations switching to the F-35. It's come down in price and has improved since the day it admitted its costly failure. I say things are looking up for the F-35 after its shortfalls.

I don't
I think we all know that if the studio had named a nation as the enemy, the movie wouldn't sell as well in that market.
35 years ago they did not name the enemy either, this is nothing new in this franchise
Oh come on, the "enemy" is Quebec. I've camped in that forrest once,
In the movie The Pacifier, Vin Deisel talks about "the Serbs" instead of who the enemy obviously was back then.

As a vet you nailed it. We had contractors that made four to five times what my sailors made. My sailors could do the job but nope gotta have contractors.
I've read & heard that about newer Navy vessels, ships, subs. Sailors just clean stuff, watch PMCs, do inspections, write reports 📋. Some may assist with aid or intl 🌏 relief, crisis efforts.
Navy73-77 army 77-94 u.s park service 94-2018 your so right about contractors I've seen the same. one time I got to save the national park service $150.000 to build new windows with my coworker. but the park service is bad to on contracting out work for no good reasons.thanks!

I mean, that makes total sense given human history.
Technologically advanced Europeans showed up to N. America and Native tribes quickly began to choose sides to buy guns and horses from in order to smite rival tribes they had been warring with for a century prior.
@@jonathanw1019, Uh......yeah. That's how the history of North America went. It wasn't the colonizers committing genocide against the Native peoples using every means available including deliberately giving tribes smallpox-infected blankets, the tribes did it to themselves! We just happened to be the ones they took advantage of.
You missed an opportunity! You should have ended with the history of how the Africans approached the technologically superior Europeans and asked to be chained into their boats for six months so they could be slaves in the new world!
That Lindsay Graham joke at the end....damn! 😂😂
Thank you again Bill Maher for your spot-on commentary.
I'm old enough to remember the times when a POTUS was elected, the next day everyone just went back to their normal life and accepted the loss if their person didn't win.
I mean... it wasn't that long ago. I'd say Clinton, or even Bush Jr. Basically we were pretty chill before 2002. Not perfet by any stretch, but still on the right side of sanity.
We don't need leaders at all. We need representative public servants. Humble, accountable, removable ones with short terms.
@@johnnations5932 TERM LIMITS not politicians at the t**t for life.
It's the money
Yes I remember before Donald Trump, those were good days.
@@nonmagicmike723 then Ben missed the mark just like Bill. Doesn’t look like they are deep thinkers
@@cy_young_9104 The mark is clear. It's a movie about the US military doing badass stuff fighting an enemy, which, in all likelihood was Iran, since it was about targeting an uncompleted uranium-enrichment site.
@@nonmagicmike723 I think most conservatives love the movie because it's not preachy. Sure it's about the US military doing badass things, but less concerned with asserting dominance or superiority over other countries and more about celebrating American naval aviation as a whole. There's a subtle difference.
@@CH-zc8qx There's no mystery as to why conservatives like it. Bill's monologue wasn't directed to conservatives, or even the public at large, but the so-called liberal critics who gave it high scores.
The aliens attacking part had me rollin
One of his best New Rules monologues ever, including an insightful and funny take on TG Maverick. 👏
This segment hit the nail on the head about America and it's screwed up warmongering better than any documentary I've seen before
I have to respectfully disagree with Maher's argument at the end.
Dunno about Russia, but good point about China.
I don't think Russians have money to watch movies.
except for the fact the studio basically said fuck you to China and left in the Jacket scene with the Taiwanese flag.
@@doublestrokeroll Did they end up keeping the jacket/flag? At one point I thought I heard otherwise, but good for them if they did.
The middle eastern Islamic countries are still a go to place for movies' villains--the population is interchangeable-Syrian, Afgan, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, and even Saudi.
Not a problem casting villains from that part of the world.
As an indigenous conservative, you hit another solid home run Bill!
Abolish the Bureau of Indian Affairs!
Audience and critics liked this movie bc it was well written, well acted, and devoid of all the usual hollywood identity politics. Simple. Also, not every American hates themselves.
Having Russia or China as an enemy in a film is not identity politics. Your comment is bizzare.
I think you’re missing the point a bit..
@@jaredmehrlich6683 your comment is bizarre. The OP said nothing about Russia or China
Translation: it was shallow and brainless.
We'll fuckin said!!! Would love to see more movies like this
And that woman was far hotter for it. Just sayin'.
Yes on all points
Exactly! People want to see men be men, America be great and strong. I'm not American but felt VERY PROUD when I saw Top Gun
It was a smart choice then and it was a smart choice in Maverick to do the same
Although it technically had to be Iran since they're the only country with operational F-14s.
...its called fill-in your top five enemies... hmm, my next door neighbors, the rude lady at the drive thru register...
@@DBBMed That was my point. The movie used all practical effects and stunt work, not CGI.
I'm not a liberal, but I support the fact Bill Maher makes fun of everybody, regardless of who might get offended. Good work.
That said... all of this hit the nail on the head

Yes, only tell kids the good things about America. Lie to them, that will work out just fine. That strategy is working out great so far (as America devolves out of the top 50 of developed countries in almost every metric and especially education).

This had me laughing start to finish, one of the better segments in awhile 🤣🤣🤣
Bill's conclusion concerning Alien Invasion was right on.
His conclusion about Top Gun Maverick being a military industrial complex propaganda film for perpetual for-profit wars is also right on but for some reason that message escaped you.
LOVED IT!!! You knocked this one out of the park sir...
Excellent 😂😂. And staggeringly ridiculous how things have become.
Yeah the "F-35 doesn't work" stuff is deja vu. They said the same stuff about the F-14 (and a lot of other hardware).....until they got the kinks out.
@@09rja I still don't understand why these guys are shitting on f35 without bothering to look into the issues which are well on their way to be fixed, if not no other countries would buy them.
@@09rja Yes the M1A1 was junk until its mopped up everything in its path since 1991. The F-15, F-16, Patriot missile, etc. Funny thing happened. Nations saw our stuff wiping Russian stuff off the map. They want what works. There is a reason Iran still flies 40 year old F-14s over anything else.
Not to mention, it is actually illegal for the pilots to demonstrate the full capabilities of the F 35 and F22 Raptor due to those abilities being Top Secret. so any losses in training ops are due to the pilots being handcuffed by their orders and UCMJ.
@M W refreshing to read informed commentary on the F35 program--it's rare to find. Good post.
