Civil Engineering BS is a perfect degree that someone with above average IQ can achieve and move forward with great career options. As far as Mechanical, Chemical, or Electrical Engineers? I have seen people with above average IQs use this to move onto obtain MBAs, or law degrees. That could work, but if you want to excel in the field of Engineering? No you need to be highly intelligent and even a 120 IQ won't cut the mustard. I would place a Physics degree in the difficulty category of the hard core Engineering disciplines. Note: I have seen people with Engineering degrees become very successful at computer programming. But if you go this route why not target a Computer Science degree? I took a programming class with a math professor and aced it. Then some of the same students took a Calculus class with the same professor and failed the first exam. The professor was full of himself, laughed at the class and said "There is a difference between knowing how to compute compared to mastering mathematics." Most people dropped this guy quickly. That's just dealing with a Professor with an ego. Yes you need to deal with this aspect of getting through Engineering undergraduate curriculum. Great Videos!
I was always a slow reader with poor comprehension. Then in about my second year of college one day I started speed reading. Self taught. Later I learned my IQ was 135 so I think I was sort of stuck in slow mode. Turns out I also had a fast forward. I found sitting though classes to be boring and unproductive. So started studying more and going about half my classes. People with high IQs actually have a overactive brain than presents it's own challenges. I've often thought my life may have been better if I was 120 or so.
In my opinion as a 2nd year civil engineering student......all you need is basic mathematics and some basic physics that's it. And of course a brain which is functioning if it's not functioning it means your dead then you cannot purse engineering 😅
I ain't giving up although I'm failing most of my exams and could still pass barely. I can improve myself even more and have the potential to get an A's and to finish the journey as an engineering student. Thanks for this video!
Two points my friend. First: Getting an A in a class is something you learn how to do. Once you master this skill use it to keep your GPA as high as possible. Second is to understand the material and use to build out your understanding of Engineering. That's something unique and need to think about. I don't think there is a one source method to do this and everyone is different. In my opinion Grades and understanding of Engineering principles are not mutually exclusive but not exactly dependent on each other to understand the math and physics. Learn how to get and A because your GPA controls your academic future.
I’m a retired electrical engineer and had a very nice career. I doubt you’re an idiot. You just came to the realization that engineering school simply gives you a foundation of math & engineering principles that will enable to learn from your experience in the real world. Make sure you have a job that is technically interesting and challenges you. You never stop learning. Embrace that idea and have fun with it.
I took the WAIS test and was slightly over mid 120 a few years ago and thought the average was 135 for the harder engineering degrees. I've been stressing over it a lot, I'm 32 with a GED and was homeschooled with a bad education (Mostly creationist junk.) I have worked trades/run a lawncare business my whole life but have always been obsessed with engineering. I specifically am deeply interested in propulsion systems like hall effect thrusters and anything stupid fast/powerful. I'm kinda realizing I'll have to go for a Master's or beyond to work on projects like that and don't want to waste my time if only geniuses can really expect to pursue such things. I'm in a point in my life where I don't worry about money anymore and can just do it but honestly I'm scared and feel like if I'm not naturally capable of it I'll waste a lot of time when I can make more money doing things I already do and just get into math and engineering as a hobby at home. If anyone has any advice I appreciate it, I don't care about ego only truth so hit me.
There's a lot I don't know about you, and this isn't advice. I'm not gonna try to convince you, out of respect for you. Here is my personal perspectives, if it is of any value to you.... My IQ is lower than yours, and I'm 44 yrs. old and have a GED. I'm going for it. I'm going for adult high school, then preparatory college courses, then engineering. It's a long term investment. You may or may not want to do that. I think it will work for me. I see the future Potentialities. However, I don't have the success that you have, career wise. Note: For me, Fear is No Way to Live and Thrive. It's important for me to Thrive as a part of living. However, your perspectives may differ about life, living, or thriving and their relationships with fear. Some people feel differently about fear than I do. For me, I don't want it, so I Work to rid myself of it. Fear can, in certain cases, dissipate, the more a person Works to Do the thing they're afraid of, if that fear was unwarranted or unnecessary. What If.... W-h-a-t I-f.... This is what I ask myself, in a beneficial way. I also remind myself, "Forget yourself and get to Work". This can apply to whatever I Choose.
I have exactly 1 friend, wouldn't consider myself very successful. You're right though, I find it hard to do things without extreme confidence of the outcome. Recently though I sold everything, loaded up my F-150 and left East, TX which isn't like me, I feel like I'm test driving a midlife crisis lol. I don't want to get political but I'm a right Libertarian and my opinions are public. I'm concerned if my positions were to ever be discovered in a University I'd be done, this may or may not be a rational fear, not sure. You're right though, what ifs have caused me vastly more pain and regret in life than my failures, not even a competition. "What if I gave her a chance dating, she seemed perfect" "What if I had left East, Texas when I was 20 instead of 32" My life has been pretty shit until recently, money never made me happy and until recently I've never bought anything for pleasure since I was in my late 20's or so and bought a nice mountain bike, that's it. As a student that’s about to go into college everyone has always been telling me to go into medicine and become a surgeon but for some reason I’ve been thinking of becoming a mechanical engineer. I’m not a super genius or anything I’m just average at math and physics and I hate chemistry 😂 but for some reason I really want to go into mechanical or computer engineering so should I do it cause I’m afraid to waste my parents money and disappoint them but I think I want to go into mechanical engineering
And I want to get into mechanical engineering cause I wanna help someone close to me who had a condition that limited their physical and that has been my main inspiration to get into mechanical engineering and help people
Then find a place among engineering "technicians" Not as an Engineer. If you get on a team of Engineers with higher IQ's your going to embarrass/hurt yourself. Don't do it. If you start at work as an assistant to engineers after you learn a lot you may find it easier to step into an Engineering position. Also, Stay narrow in your field of interest this makes it easier to master. Blessings.

I'm a 22yo engineering student. I started my STEM degree very recently. I have done some online IQ tests from sites like the official Mensa webpage (which I admit isn't as accurate as an in person test, but still gives a roughly estimate) where I consistently score a result spanning 126-140. One of the tests I've done divides the IQ in spatial, memory, and verbal. The first two categories give me 136 and 140, respectively, while verbal at a much lower of 103. So, I don't get why university is being so difficult to me. I go to class and it's like I don't understand what's going on. I'm being left behind while everyone else seems to understand. Have I been fooled into believing I'm more intelligent than I am? What is going on? What can I do to improve my situation? I'm starting to feel frustrated with STEM
Hey man, I'm not pursuing engineering but I think that it might be, to a large degree, that many people just have a lot of prior knowledge in comparison to you. It seems like a lot of people think the way you do when they start an engineering degree, from what I have gathered
@jonatansandberg312 it could be an explanation, I didn't have the best preparation for STEM, honestly. But even then, it is crazy that many do so seamlessly. I will have to catch up somehow if I don't want to repeat the year
Stick at it, eventually you will catch up but you will have to put in the work during summer breaks. I was the same, I didn’t go to the best high school and everyone seemed ahead of me but by my bachelors and masters year everyone is practically on the same lvl.

I respectfully disagree. As a graduate level Engineer I agree you need to put in the work no matter how smart you are. You also need a passion for the subject which is mostly math, physic fundamentals at the undergraduate level. At the graduate level creativity enters the equation and you need to publish. I understand part of what you do is motivational speaking/advertising. Let's not kid or mislead anyone for UA-cam views! If you want to publish in a peer review scientific Journal a 120 IQ won't even cut it. Why? Because your peer review is evaluated by world class scientists who are brilliant. Why don't you consider an article on this topic? Just because you hold an undergraduate degree in Engineering does not make you an Engineer. Looks like this is what you are referring to in this video. If you want to contribute to the field of Engineering? You need at least superior IQ within the top 5% of our population.
@@KaurSingh-bo6gq I have seen graduate level Engineers spend ten years pursuing a PhD and end up walking away with nothing. This is one of the few degrees where completing the coursework won't guarantee those three letters at the end of your name. No offense but think about why this happens. The author of this video is well aware of this fact. What is interesting is Universities have changed the undergraduate curriculum into two parts. First the traditional Engineering degree has not changed which prepares students for graduate research degrees. In my opinion this is Engineering. Second, Universities have worked with private industry to understand and prepare students to be productive with an undergraduate Engineering degree. In my opinion this is not Engineering and allows graduates to enter the workforce without needing an advanced graduate degree. It's more or less Engineering "Light" but the author of this video doesn't mention this important point. The second option discussed here could be suitable for someone with an IQ slightly above average. Again, why would anyone want to do this and struggle for the rest of their career?

Do what you love. Don't go into something just for the money. However, one of my favorite family doctors had an undergrad degree in chemical engineering. The body is basically an amazing array of biochemical and biomechanical systems, from the cellular level to the circulatory systems, with pumps, piping, flow rates, thermodynamics, heat transfer, energy production, inputs, outputs, and control systems processes. So if you want to go into the medical field, you can still look at it all thru a chemical engineering lens, which is absolutely fascinating.
I'm 15 years old 9th grader and I have the IQ of 138 currently but I don't feel like I'm intelligent enough. Can I still increase my IQ to 160? I want to become as smart as Albert Einstein.
Einstein iq was much higher than 160, that number was made up by a journalist and just caught on. Based off his theories and equations, some of which are just now getting proven today, estimations for his actual iq come out at the low 200s

I’m 34, and have struggled most of my life with staying focused on long term goals. The book that has helped me more than any other (aside from religious texts) is Atomic Habit. When it clicked with the engineering mindset I’ve always had I’ve been finding ways to design my environment (my home) to develop and maintain the habits I’m wanting to create for myself. I’m looking into getting a masters in engineering, and want to build my habits that will guide me through successfully. I’m glad I found your channel, thank you for the content!

This is probably a reason why the culture in Japan produces some of the best in efficiency and engineering, their train systems being one of the most notable.

@@becominganengineer2271 EQ is Emotional Quotient, what I touched upon above. Please know aspirenux, many engineers are on the autistic scale including me, high functioning Aspergers. Through therapy and learning about yourself aka leaning on your IQ which you say isn't a problem, quite possibly you are on the autistic spectrum yourself. You can overcome this through understanding and 'channeling' your superpower of Aspergers. In other words your social deficit or what you perceived to be challenged EQ can be elevated. Some if not most of the greatest minds who ever lived are/were on the Aspergers scale of autism including Elon Musk, Bobby Fisher and perhaps most of the greatest scientists like Einstein, Telsa, Newton and countless more. Read all the psychology books you have time for and in particular books on autism and through your intellect, you should be able to manage your EQ. PS. I became interested in the subject years ago because my brother has a genius IQ and Masters in Physics from a top college and he was never nice to me and had a stilted personality I could never understand. I learned he was profoundly autistic and it sure never stopped him from a graduate degree where he did graduate at the top of this class and he has children and is still married. Through his towering intellect, he learned to manage his social deficit. I am like my brother only a bit more 'normal' in interaction with people although the polar opposite as more hyper verbal.

@@becominganengineer2271 Yes but you know they scale most every class except Engineering Economics. So you probably got a B or C which is recoverable to maintain a high GPA. I would say a 22/50 is not bad and certainly not enough to drop Engineering. I remember getting a 25/100 on my first Statics exam which turned out to be an A.

Second, Universities have worked with private industry to understand and prepare students to be productive with an undergraduate Engineering degree. In my opinion this is not Engineering and allows graduates to enter the workforce without needing an advanced graduate degree. It's more or less Engineering "Light" but the author of this video doesn't mention this important point. The second option discussed here could be suitable for someone with an IQ slightly above average. Again, why would anyone want to do this and struggle for the rest of their career?
@@CryAlpha123 Honestly I do not understand why anyone with an average IQ would even consider pursuing an Engineering degree. I would never choose a profession in a field I didn't love or felt I couldn't excel. Why would anyone want to do this? I think it's called self awareness and emotional intelligence. I’m standing between chosening chemical engineering or between the medical field because it has many job opportunities and i love chemical engineering so much what shall i do 😭😭😭😭😭
Do what you love. Don't go into something just for the money. However, one of my favorite family doctors had an undergrad degree in chemical engineering. The body is basically an amazing array of biochemical and biomechanical systems, from the cellular level to the circulatory systems, with pumps, piping, flow rates, thermodynamics, heat transfer, energy production, inputs, outputs, and control systems processes. So if you want to go into the medical field, you can still look at it all thru a chemical engineering lens, which is absolutely fascinating.
I'm 15 years old 9th grader and I have the IQ of 138 currently but I don't feel like I'm intelligent enough. Can I still increase my IQ to 160? I want to become as smart as Albert Einstein.
138 is like the top 2%. I think you are plenty smart enough. i recommend working on your discipline.
Einstein iq was much higher than 160, that number was made up by a journalist and just caught on. Based off his theories and equations, some of which are just now getting proven today, estimations for his actual iq come out at the low 200s
@@becominganengineer2271This is the best advice to give him, and at his age it will have an impact over every part of his life, including confidence, which seems to be his primary concern. I’m 34, and have struggled most of my life with staying focused on long term goals. The book that has helped me more than any other (aside from religious texts) is Atomic Habit. When it clicked with the engineering mindset I’ve always had I’ve been finding ways to design my environment (my home) to develop and maintain the habits I’m wanting to create for myself. I’m looking into getting a masters in engineering, and want to build my habits that will guide me through successfully. I’m glad I found your channel, thank you for the content!
Work ethic and self-discipline are just as important as IQ, and probably an even bigger predictor of success.
@@gretchentaylor6594 I agree that it is a much better predictor of success. The more I read about success the more I see the concept that a good process usually results in success. This is probably a reason why the culture in Japan produces some of the best in efficiency and engineering, their train systems being one of the most notable.

@@becominganengineer2271 EQ is Emotional Quotient, what I touched upon above. Please know aspirenux, many engineers are on the autistic scale including me, high functioning Aspergers. Through therapy and learning about yourself aka leaning on your IQ which you say isn't a problem, quite possibly you are on the autistic spectrum yourself. You can overcome this through understanding and 'channeling' your superpower of Aspergers. In other words your social deficit or what you perceived to be challenged EQ can be elevated. Some if not most of the greatest minds who ever lived are/were on the Aspergers scale of autism including Elon Musk, Bobby Fisher and perhaps most of the greatest scientists like Einstein, Telsa, Newton and countless more.
Read all the psychology books you have time for and in particular books on autism and through your intellect, you should be able to manage your EQ.
PS. I became interested in the subject years ago because my brother has a genius IQ and Masters in Physics from a top college and he was never nice to me and had a stilted personality I could never understand. I learned he was profoundly autistic and it sure never stopped him from a graduate degree where he did graduate at the top of this class and he has children and is still married. Through his towering intellect, he learned to manage his social deficit. I am like my brother only a bit more 'normal' in interaction with people although the polar opposite as more hyper verbal.

@@becominganengineer2271 Yes but you know they scale most every class except Engineering Economics. So you probably got a B or C which is recoverable to maintain a high GPA. I would say a 22/50 is not bad and certainly not enough to drop Engineering. I remember getting a 25/100 on my first Statics exam which turned out to be an A.
