Hey Lea, I'm an ER nurse and I've been using this pattern to make caps for myself and all my coworkers, mostly from donated fabric and old scrubs. A few other nurses are sewing hats, too. They have made such a positive, cheerful impact on our work environment!! Thank you so much for providing the free printable pattern and your excellent tutorial.
I don't usually comment on videos, but I would be ungrateful if I didn't thank you for providing such a good video. I've watched the original several times as I began making these to donate to our local hospital (who has said they are in dire need). And this followup is wonderful. Your voice is soothing and the pattern is simple enough that even I could follow it. Blessings and peace to you.
Thanks so much Lea. My niece is a resident doc in a Boston Hosp. Ten months ago they couldn’t get scrub caps. Her mother found your original tutorial, she started making them and so did I. I have made over 150-my niece distributes them. I found that I love fabric and now feel like I am doing something to help get us through this. Hope you are doing well! The caps are simple to sew after you get into the rhythm and the docs love them!
I made 100 of these last spring at the first of the pandemic for my daughter's colleagues at the hospital where she works. They asked me for more now that they are overwhelmed with patients. This pattern works perfectly for them and I use fun fabrics with puppies, ladybugs, bees, and pineapples to have something to brighten up their PPE. Thank you so much for doing this!
Thank you so much for this!! The updated video and pattern were very helpful. I've just bought a sewing machine to make masks for myself and friends. My niece, who is a midwife at a hospital in NJ, asked me to make her a scrub cap, and she LOVES the one I made for her. You made it so straightforward and simple. Thank you!!
The best tutorial around. You explain things in a way that a non-sewer can understand. I used another tutorial first, but the end result from your pattern and instruction was more what i was looking for.
Used your original pattern and have made 2 dozen for my daughter-in-law and her co-workers at the Children’s hospital ICU" They are so appreciative of anything we can do for them as they fight this virus. The pattern was great and very fast to sew up. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this easy to follow tutorial and pattern! I adjusted the print size by clicking "More options" in the print screen and type in a custom scale. I used 90% based on other people's comments and it fit great! I made these for a family member that's a nurse working in a Covid unit where they don't have enough PPE. I'm adding buttons to the part of the cap that fits near the ears to alleviate pressure on the ears from masks. Thanks again!
I'm so glad to find this tutorial and pattern. I've been making masks since the beginning of the pandemic, but my friend that works in the hospital, just asked me if I could make her some caps. This was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for this tutorial and for all the hard work you are putting in on the front lines!
Thank you for the video and pattern! I've purchased a couple of patterns on Etsy and I always come back to yours. I've made over 150 scrub caps for my co-workers and friends. Thanks again! -From an ED RN in California
Thank you and thank you to your pattern makers! My sorority sister who is an RN requested scrub caps amid covid-19, and this is by far the easiest to understand tutorial (that covers all hair/ponytails) that I've found. Thank you! I'll try sewing tonight.
I made 5 of these for a friend that will be working in high risk ICU. She has to provide her own personal scrub cap to wear under her full PPE. Your pattern was great and easy to put together. I made a few adjustments on the ties. I put right sides together and sewed them together, then turned them right side out. I then hemmed the straight edge a 1/4". I then followed your instructions for the cap part. I like the ties better because it was less bulky. Great video and pattern, I really appreciate it!
Thank You Lea for making and sharing this video with a FREE pattern. Also thank you to Jessica for creating the printable pattern and those who made it so it can be printed on regular paper. So appreciated!!!! I have been sewing tons of face masks to donate and was just asked by my daughter-in-law to sew scrub caps because she is an in-home PT who will be visiting patients who have had COVID-19. Though the company she works for provides N95 masks and scrub uniforms they do not provide scrub caps. I am adding buttons on the side of the cap so that she can attach her face mask since she is wearing it for so many hours each day. Again - thank you and Stay SAFE!!!!
Thank you Lea ..this is a wonderful video...I'm making some for my son who works in the ER ...he needs some even when he leaves the hospital ...who knew when we learned how to sew we could be savings life ...be safe ...💞 😷
I was asked by an Ohio State University nurse for these caps. Thank you so much for this video. I'm giving it a try tomorrow. May God bless your work with excellence and safety as you serve patients.
My daughter, an Emergency Room doc, sent me your video last night so I could make scrub caps for her and others. And then this morning I found your new video! Thank you so much. Stay safe, with gratitude.
My Daughter is also a doctor in Emergency. We live in Melbourne, Australia. She also asked me yesterday to make these for her and colleagues. It feels great, doesn’t it, to be able to do something practical to help those on the ‘frontline’.
Just finished making this cap. The video was SUPER helpful and it turned out great! Just getting back into sewing and this was super straight forward and easy to follow. Thank you so much for the free tutorial from RNs in Los Angeles :) Sending love your way!
If anyone is having a hard time finding fabric and elastic I bought a cheaper end set of sheets which gives you 2 pillow cases, flat sheet, and fitted sheet. I made two caps alone with pillow case and can get 1 more of the bottom section and used a small amount of the fitted sheet cutting the top head piece with some of the elastic that's already sewn for you. Tons of leftover fabric to make tons, of course just only one design but comes out to be very cheap for fabric yard amount over buying per yard as well as has elastic already for you!
Oh my gosh! I tried another video's pattern and couldn't even figure out the pattern pieces. Your pattern is so easy to print, put together and understand! I have watched you sew it together and it looks so easy, I can't wait to get started. Thank you so much! I wish you all the best in your medical career! Thank you again!

Hi Leah! Thank you so much for sharing this these are awesome! After I iron it out, I sew the bottom a bit differently. I fold up the entire bottom so it is pattern up on the larger pattern side down piece. I start on the vertical part of the side tie, and sew up, pivot the material, and go across the top of the tie and continue all the way across the top of the pattern up bit to the other side of the tie, then pivot and do the tiny vertical side of the tie. Then I sew each of the curves but continue in one sewing bit from the one side, across the straight part, and down the other curved part. On yours it shows sewing in the middle, but my line is never straight enough. Thank you again for sharing and the nurses and RTs are loving them
Thank you for the update. I am making these right now for local nurses. I had to modify it a bit because elastic is impossible to find right now. I only had wider elastic but it worked out. Please stay safe and thank you for what you do. Nurses are awesome human beings.❤️
Thanks so much for this awesome video and tutorial. Your measurements and your PDF pattern were perfect. I just retired from ICU nursing after 35 years (right before this pandemic hit!) but my sister and my 2 nieces are all ICU nurses in the busiest hospitals in San Francisco and they asked me to make them scrub caps that they can take home and wash because their hospitals have serious shortages of PPE. Also they all have a lot of hair and your pattern is perfect. Thanks again and stay safe out there. I think about all of the healthcare workers, my family and my friends I left behind every day.

Great work! I’m whipping some up right now with donated fabric to help Our local health providers. We’re attaching buttons so that the mask elastic doesn’t wear on the ears. Thank you so much for sharing your process.
Thank you for the time and effort you put into making this video. You are an excellent demonstrator and your voice is encouraging and soothing. I am looking forward to sewing a cap with you.
That's what I do with mask too. I up size by 15% for my son who is bigger than the average man. Most adults I make at 100%. I shrink down too 85% for teen or petite builds. 50,% for children. I have a request for a three old so I am will try that at 40% .
I made up this up yesterday, found it was to big for my head and have since made it smaller. Fingers crossed it’s all good. My daughter picks them up on her way to afternoon shift today. If you sew this pattern will be very easy as it’s only 2 pieces and I have found it so very quick. Thanks...Linda (Australian nurses mum)
Thank you for the tutorial. My daughter is an RN and sent it to me with a request to make some. I made my pattern from a roll of holiday wrapping paper and it worked great.
Lori Jonker Wow! that’s a great idea. Can you show what that looks like? I’m making them for my daughter in law and her coworkers in the icu. Thank you

going to be making some cotton face masks and a surgical cap for my sister-in-law and her coworkers who are all nurses in Houston, TX! Thank you for your videos!
Super excited to land on this pattern and video. I'm making these for doctors in NYC and here in Maine. We are shutdown here in Maine so I'm using older very soft flannel shirts that I'm cutting apart and using them for the headgear! Thanks for posting. :). Any thanks for all you do.
This is an easy pattern but it’s big for folks that have short hair or smaller heads, I’ve made several for my dil who is an emergency head charge nurse, they are so appreciative. Also I have thought about shortening the casing up farther to pull the band tighter.
Thank you for these instructions and for your words of encouragement to us all. You're right -- scary times call for inner strength and caring for others. From 6 feet away, of course. I'm making caps for my local hospital. Couldn't do it without your help!

I have found it easier to top stitch all the way around that loose bottom hem so that it stays in place, instead of a single line of stitching down the center. That way it can be flipped up and won't move around while it's being worn.

Great work! I’m whipping some up right now with donated fabric to help
Our local health providers. We’re attaching buttons so that the mask elastic doesn’t wear on the ears. Thank you so much for sharing your process.
So happy to see you got through med school and are now on your residency!
Hope you're OK and safe!
Thanks for the tutorial 💕
haha glad I made it through too X) take care!
Thank you for the time and effort you put into making this video. You are an excellent demonstrator and your voice is encouraging and soothing. I am looking forward to sewing a cap with you.
You're very welcome! take care :)
I found a handy trick to scale the pattern down. I just photocopied it at 85% and it was the perfect size for a smaller head.
Linda Wood do you mind sharing the size you used for the crown? And how it effected your pattern? I’m attempting to do the same :)
Good luck!
Thank you for the tutorial. My daughter is an RN and sent it to me with a request to make some. I made my pattern from a roll of holiday wrapping paper and it worked great.
Soleil Medley great idea!
So smart!
Love your tutorial! I'm a quilter and this is the first garment I have tried to make. It turned out great! Thank you for your informative video ♥️
Thank you for your videos! First time sewer here and I was able to follow your instructions and make 6 scrub caps with no issues.
Thanks for this tutorial!!!! FYI I'm adding buttons slightly above and behind the ears to attach a face mask (per my ER nurse niece's request)
that's a really good idea!
Ill be doing the same for my husband.
Lori Jonker Wow! that’s a great idea. Can you show what that looks like? I’m making them for my daughter in law and her coworkers in the icu. Thank you
I am trying to figure out where the best place is to do exactly this. I want to get them in the best place. How did you decide where to put them?
Thank you so much. Our favourite design. I made some for my medical director who bravely had her head shaved to raise funds for PPE. Also making for our Covid clinicians. Birmingham UK.
Thanks you so much for the pattern. I’ve probably a dozen of them. Just donated to friends & relatives , mostly frontliners. 👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much! I started sewing back when I was a resident too. This pattern was super easy to follow - I made 3 this morning to wear on L&D. Thanks so much! Stay safe!

This is the BEST tutorial I have seen. Thank you!
Super excited to land on this pattern and video. I'm making these for doctors in NYC and here in Maine. We are shutdown here in Maine so I'm using older very soft flannel shirts that I'm cutting apart and using them for the headgear! Thanks for posting. :). Any thanks for all you do.
great way to repurpose fabric!!
Excellent. Thank you. Half hour ago my friend the L&D nurse asked if I knew how to make "hair covers" that she is being told to wear. I do now! Be safe, be healthy.
Thank you so much! I will be making some caps for my sister in law who is working as a Covid19 nurse at Mass General. Stay safe!

Hi from South Africa! Making some caps for my daughter during her internship in a provincial town on the coast ... thanx 4 clear instructions
Thank you so much! Your explanations are very clear and easy to follow.
You're very welcome!
I have found it easier to top stitch all the way around that loose bottom hem so that it stays in place, instead of a single line of stitching down the center. That way it can be flipped up and won't move around while it's being worn.
94118cpc Can you attach a picture pls
94118cpc I did the same!
I did the same thing!
Thanks for the clear instruction, I will make some for my friends today!
