  • Repairing the bezel on a Chicago Brand 6" digital caliper.
These calipers get used daily in the shop and one day I found the glass bezel had shattered. Removing the broken glass revealed the LCD screen to be undamaged.
Some of the raw material we use for some parts we manufacture for resale come in these small plastic boxes, which we save. It's a simple matter to cut a piece of plastic to fit into the recess where the bezel used to be. Some fabric adhesive to hold the plastic in place the the calipers are as good as new. Should be able to make about a dozen replacement bezels out of one plastic box.
When I was taking machining classes back in the late '90s. My dad gave me this digital caliper for a birthday present. Been using them ever since.

Have tossed because the glass cover broke...protective shield stopped protecting...have to start saving the tough clear plastic used to airtight hermetically seal...due to my pack rat tendency have the old things that still work just don't have their original look...know now can just cut plastic, film, even plastic wrap might do with some things...learning to be resourceful, innovative and saving things that have a second life and more...waitting to find the right plastic to cover the end of a flashlight...♀

Yes, saving potentially useful things is good. I have a few of these little boxes and use some for storing small parts, etc. But they ended up being perfect for this repair. Sure, one could go out and buy some material, but then you end up with a 12" square sheet and just need a little piece cut out of one corner and then you have to find some place to store that unused material. Plus you spend an hour or two driving around to a few stores to find that material.

Yes I think it is better. At least now if the bezel gets too hard to see through, I can just pop out the old one and cut a new piece of plastic and replace it.
