Hello and welcome to SUMO PRIME TIME. It’s Day 15, the final day of the July Grand Sumo Tournament taking place in Nagoya. Sumo’s king of the ring, Yokozuna Terunofuji, aimed to redeem himself by capturing his tenth championship. Winning 10 titles has been Terunofuji’s long-standing goal, as achieving this milestone will earn him the title of a ‘Dai Yokozuna’ or ‘Great Yokozuna’. However, other combatants hoped to dethrone the king as the July Tournament went down to the wire, and then some. This year’s July contest is extra special, as it marks the last time the 15-day competition will be held in the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, which has hosted the July Nagoya Basho since 1965. So, who came out on top for the last time in this history-rich gymnasium? We hope you enjoy watching how the heated showdown in Nagoya concluded.
These updates are nice but other than these I have no way of actually watching the tournaments until JSA and NHK either; allow independent UA-cam channels to show the bouts, or, starts streaming the bouts themselves. I love sumo but I have no way of seeing it here in Australia. Abema won't work here, even with a VPN it's hit-and-miss. You need to do more for your international followers than just snippets of bouts and highlights, we want to see the whole thing. You're making it hard to be an international sumo fan.
ive started to believe that they just dont want wide spread inter ational fans, because worldwide fame and even worse an international oversight can only result in a loss of the traditional religious aspect and will result in all manner of rule, safety and conduct changes and the elders absolutely do not want this.
For perspective, the elders do not care about how available sumo is to those outside of Japan. Realistically, the probably wouldn’t even recruit actual rikishi outside of Japan (and close outlying countries) if they didn’t have the issue of new members joining being low. Tradition is what’s hindering your ability to watch
Brilliant result for Terunofuji, I'm so glad he reached his target of 10. I hope Takanosho can keep up this standard of Sumo, he could get to the top the way he fought this basho
Congratulations to the great Yokozuna Terunofuji 👏🤴🏼You nearly gave your fans a heart attack but know that we were with you all the way. Your courage and dignity is an example and inspiration to so many🥰
It's good to see a smile on Terunofuji's face as he always seems so serious when he's on the dohyo. How much longer will he continue to compete, you have to wonder?
Part of me was expecting him to announce his retirement from hitting his 10 win goal but maybe because there's no clear other wrestler to take his place, the council wants him to ride it out. I don't blame him though! It's good to be on top $
@@FrisbeeTF2 That really depends on his condition. If we look at the documentary of hakuho's last yusho we get a glimpse into the suffering it takes to win. If the rumours of terus worsened knees is true then I can't imagine the pain he is every day, let alone getting them treated/drained
If not by injury, I think he will sitting around till acquired elder stock. Current banzuke doesn't has any guys who can dominate like him yet, so it's unlikely the JSA will want him retire.
Well deserved victory in this basho by Yokozuna Terunofuji ! His 10th, now he is a Dai-Yokozuna ! Much love & regards to all Japanese Sumo fans from tiny little Malta 🇲🇹
I'm a casual viewier, but watching Terunofuji lift an opponent out of the ring with a double armbar was what got me into the sport. Great to see him win. I look forward to watching Takanosho's progress as well.
The narration is the most lively and colorful I've heard in a long time. A very professional presentation that supports sumo wrestling monitoring. Thanks!
Terrific series; well earned. It was even more satisfying to have a sudden death playoff match instead of a simple win. Avenging a loss and winning a considerable honor.
Ura's match vs Terunofuji really felt like when the anime protagonist uses all of his techniques against an important opponent, but gets effortlessly shutdown and sent back to training for a future match.
Thanks for the summary of the Nagoya Basho! It was an incredibly memorable tournament. Terunofuji had promised his fans at a pre-tournament rally that he would achieve his first victory in Nagoya and his 10th overall, and he delivered brilliantly!
Thanks for putting all these matches together in a convenient package (my local station doesn't have weekend coverage for some reason). I keep reminding myself that while the sanyaku have a first-place schedule, a yokozuna has a first place schedule _for the entire remainder of his career,_ and is obligated to fight like a champion _every single basho_ *for the entire remainder of his career.* It takes a pretty phenomenal athlete to make yokozuna, much more so to get to double-digit yusho. Great job not collapsing in crunch time. He can retire whenever he likes. 😀
With Terunofuji's winning this Yusho he helps close the current venue for good, next year they will be in a brand new arena that will have better A/C system and both the fans and the Rikishi will not have to suffer in the heat.
Terunofuji deserves all the best. Becoming a dai-yokozuna after everything he passed with those injuries is very inspirational. Cheers from Brasil! 🍾🥇🎉
You can tell the Great Yokozuna has the power! He also doesn't fall for the nimble men, staying at them! Only some strong, big fellows can even compete!
I don't know if even Teru himself expected to be taking 2 titles in 2024, it was a phenomenal effort! When he became yokozuna we all knew he would be in constant battle with his own body and abilities. I didn't expect him to still be here actively competing 3 years on. We were so lucky to see a 10th yusho for Teru, his first in Nagoya and it all coming down to a playoff at the final basho EVER in the Dolphins Arena!! Hiro, I missed more regular uploads, I hope you have been doing well and staying healthy in the summer heat. I hope to see more SPT videos coming out soon :) Maybe you could do a retrospective on memorable Nagoya moments with Murray and John at some point?
I hate that he lost to Kotozakura, but he redeemed himself against Takanosho whom he had no business losing to in the first place. Secured his 10 wins making him Dai, but fact remains I don’t see Yokozuna material in the others… yet!
I agree even though many were trying to push Takakeisho for YZ he just showed that he is fragile and one dimensional(pusher/thruster) and was not able to keep his momentum when had a Yusho in his pocket. he would come out and fall flat on his face when in the next tournament.
@@yankee_tango He makes for a good Gate to becoming Yokozuna. Takakeisho is still a great Sumo Wrestler, if you take just one thing ( Being a Pusher/Thruster) and focus simply that, you learn how to make it work vs any types. The problem is if your ability to adapt with that one thing is strong enough for any situation. With Takakeisho, it wasn't. As you said, he would run out of steam. I feel bad for him to lose Ozeki, but like Shodai and less similiarly with Mitakeumi, but it is a changing of the guard. The question is who amongst the newer ground has the true makings of a Yokozuna. I still have hopes on Hoshoryu and Asanoyama.
@@Blind3866 Changing of the Guard is exactly what is happening. Not everyone can be Tamawashi who has not missed a bout since he debuted back in 2004. If I have my figures right Day 5 or 6 of the September Basho he will break the Iron Man streak. I am also hoping that Hoshoryu can make it to YZ but he has a tall order on him in September he has to make sure he get's 8 or he will fall like Keisho and need 10. I had high hopes for Wakatakakage until he ripped his knee apart but it looks as tho he will be fine, I see him making Ozeki around this time next year.
Sadly, Asanoyama's ACL tear he suffered this basho will severely delay, if not completely derail any chance he has of reaching Yokozuna. He'll have to start over from the bottom ranks again!
@@dalfonzowilliams4792 Aye, its true, it will slow him down, but if he has the same caliber that Terunofuji was able to demonstrate, he will persevere. It will just take time.

I don't know much about Sumo, but I respect how Yokozuna Terunofuji was gentle to his combatants at the finishing move and avoided them possibly getting injured.
Terunofuji body looks so solid! Had been worried since the previous bashos he was looking flabby like how kisenosato looked prior to retirement. Glad his brand of power sumo is still amazingly strong like how a Yokozuna is! Love to see top rankers have dominating performances to show their authority and love for the sport
