The AMD Athlon 860k works perfect for a budget, or enthusiast grade PC build.
In the end this PC ran all the games we bought on ultra settings at a steady 60fps, These games included Arma II, Euro Truck Simulator 2, and World of Subways 3.

next athlon will have Zen cores and if he would have 4/4 cores/threads that athlon will be on the level of i5 4670k or i5 6500 .. depend on clock which will have !! I hope that athlon with Zen cores will stay in price range what now have todays athlons or at least fx 6300 and performance will be on i5 level!! Pentium now dont worth for buy because he microstuter and freeze video/picture in games which use more than 2 cores and that games are GTA5 ,ASC syndicate ,Witcher 3 and some others
+Mr11ESSE111 The zen 8 core benchmarks got leaked and there were destroying the 4930k and 5930k options from intel. The 8 core zen was on par with the i5 6500.
Bobby .264 if Zen will have 8 core and 16 threads and IPC on Broadwell level then he will be on par with new Xeon Broadwell -E chips and not with stupid i5 6500!! what is i5 6500 at all?? that junk is weaker than i7 4770K which are Haswell !! and you compare 8/16 Zen cpu with Broadwell IPC with some stupid i5 6500 which are only 4/4 ?? no thermal paste used when instaling the CPU fan....not so great...

well, it's still a good processor, and you can always upgrade, so don't worry too much about it.

is a x4 860k and a r9 390 direckt x12 gddr 5 and 8 GB of Video RAM a good Combo?
I think the r9 390 may be bottle-necked by the 860k, but an r9 380 should be fine, but if you were to go with the 390, you could just upgrade the cpu later.

well, it is rated better, but it isn't as fast.
On PassMark it says it's 2.7Ghz, so maybe some ocing would be in order, but it's definitely a good choice, also because it's skylake you'd be able to use ddr4, which has ridiculous speeds, so that would be my choice.

go for a 2gb 750ti and you should get maybe 40-50 fps on mostly high settings with textures on normal on GTA v, but I cant be sure of that.

Yeah looks weren't all that important, it was just another source of airflow for the PC. Airflow from front fan is a bit restricted.

yes definitely, it can run Watch Dogs on max at about 40 fps according to the clients feedback.

+KillerZ224 I would go for the 280x, it is better, but not *that* much better. It depends what you have to spend, the 960 is around 30-40 dollar cheaper I think.

Nuggets yeah we have bought from there before. You should try Elara.ie They are good aswell, but they don't have as good a stock as dabs.

That CiT PSU is awful, tier 5 PSU, avoid if possible. It doesn't even specify the total +12v rail output, which I guess it's around 300w. The 560 ti requires a good quality 500w PSU. CiT is way less than ideal.
+Ben Yeung Yes we figured that out.... We only bought it to stay in budget, I had not had any experience with CiT PSUs in the past, so I looked to the Amazon review, which said it was good, but we managed to get a Corsair CX600 in the end.
Sam' s TechTips Well, the CX600 is a step towards the light. I hate to break this to you, but the CX series is build by CWT and is known to have reliability/longevity issues. The good news is that the CX series isn't known to go up in flames, although I still wouldn't recommend overclocking with one of those units. I would have gone with a Seasonic or superflower platform. I recently purchased the Antec HCG 850m, Seasonic made, for 69.99 USD. Don't cheap out on the PSU, the most important part of your system.
Once you get some decent PSUs and mobos, perhaps you can make some AMD overclocking videos. AMD cpus are cheap and fun to OC. I bet people will really enjoy it.

Ben Yeung To be honest, I'm not the biggest overclocking fan, I'm sure I will make a video or two on the subject, but I usually don't do it.
Sam' s TechTips yup, most people don't. That doesn't mean that they are terrible. The CX problem lies in the parts they chose. The primary capacitor is only rated at 85c as supposed to the industry standard at 105c, while the secondary ones are Chinese made. That causes the PSU to wear out faster than usual, especially if you have a heavy load on it. Well, I will leave you to your video production. I look forward to more videos.

Nah 400w is enough. I recommend the Corsair 430W 430M. It's 80+ Bronze and very good.
I have an 860k and a r9 280x. Not a bad rig at all, and with a Hyper 212 and a small overclock, it's proven to be a very capable team Red machine. Did you run it much with the stock heat sink? It will do well at stock speeds, but even then was horribly loud. I guess AMD knows that those who drop the money in a black edition probably won't use the stock cooler for long, if at all...
I think we used an FX cooler on this system, I have used the 860k in a good fee builds, it has become probably my favourite CPU. The bang for buck is just INSANE. Yeah, I tend to see the stock coolers as a "just in case" item.
Good question then... Do you OC much? I can get about 4.4 out of my 860k at 1.45 volts with a reasonable thermal margin. I mean, it does well enough at stock, but it's always good to know the headroom is there... At any rate, it seems these chips are pretty stable, I assume they are binned without the iGPU enabled. It's rare to win the silicon lottery like that these days, lol
That will last you till mid spring with the 560 Ti.

Yes, it will run it on the lowest settings, at a decent FPS, I'm not sure what exactly.

well yes you can remove the cooler mount and back plate, and if you look at the water cooler online, it will state the possible sockets, as long as fm2+ is there you're good to go.

Yes it will overclock, plus it runs pretty fast stock anyway, 3.7Ghz
Thanks for your quick response, this has 4.0 turbo? This board can archive and deliver the extra power for that? I've seen comments on ebay saying that you cannot overclock it unless you have a 45watt cpu on the board. Thanks
Electric Lightbulb well as far as I know, pretty much all motherboards will do the Turbo speed, but you would want to got for a good motherboard, preferably a88x, to squeeze as much power out of it as possible.

well we swapped it out of this PC for my old cx600, then we used it in a htpc, and that worked fine.
+Sams Tech Tips you have a rubbish psu get rid of it and get a corsair cx 500w that psu could go out on you really any day, you should never ever go with a brand that no one has ever heard of, and you cannot afford to skimp on the psu, that is just a NO NO
i just got this cpu, 16 gb ram, 1 tb hard drive and a msi A68HM-E33 V2 motherboard for $250 from newegg.. i have a 600 watt seasonic PSU to put in it.. right now I have a gtx 560 but im going to upgrade to the gtx 950 2gb after I get it put together to see how much room I have.. also got a case in that combo... should run great.. right now i can run bf4 on mostly high settings at 60 fps with a Phenon II x6 2.8 processor, 8 gb of ram so i should be good to go when i get this bad boy in.. cant wait

It's not my PC, it was a client build, but the client doesn't have any software to check, and for this system temperatures didn't matter in the slightest as long as the PC didn't overheat..

You can't beat the 860K for the price. I've had one going on an ASUS A88X-PRO since January, running at 4.5 GHz. Even at the stock 3.7/4.0, it's a strong performer.
indeed it is a really nice CPU, considering that cya is a CPU intensive game, it runs it like a champ
+John Cate I had bought the A78M-E35 and consistently ive been getting an "99" error for a while now, the computer fires up and nothing happens on the monitor..i also tried 3 separate monitors. i do not have any spare parts to swap anything out for. is the AMD Athlon 860k compatible with the A78M-E35 you know off hand?

Error code 99 on an MSI board normally means a fault with an input device. Try disconnecting everything from the board except for the keyboard and see if it will boot then. Use a PS/2 keyboard if you have one.

ran with the 860k for 2 years..had to upgrade to a 8370 this week to play the games i wanted to play @ 60fps
What games were you looking to play. I updated the BIOS of my motherboard and its running like brand new.
Sams Tech Tips Street Fighter 5 mainly. it would only give me 45-50 paired with a r9 fury and 16 gigs of ddr3. which is unplayable for a fighting game fighters HAVE to run @ 60. and Rise of the Tomb Raider didnt give me the performance i wanted. i could only run that game at medium settings at best..i want very high settings which a 4 core just wasnt a recommended cpu for that.
