    Awesome. An old friend of mine was cleaning out his gear collection and gave me a Konica III. It truly is built like a tank.

    The cool thing about the IIIa is that it can shoot half frame with a special insert and only requires one stroke of the advance lever.

    Cool video Graham! I love my Konica IIIA. I’m no repair expert such as yourself but I’ve taught myself to work on my IIIA. There is something really special about an all-mechanical camera. Made it an even better shooting experience for me knowing how all the mechanics work.

    Great video! I have the Japanese version of the iiia. I love love love it! Though I’m mostly an SLR guy, this camera becomes me because of the stellar build And image quality. I’m constantly amazed at the images coming out of it. Thanks for reviewing it!!!

    I had an Auto S2 with the sticky shutter. The rumor is that the whale oil they used to lube the mechanism is the culprit.

      haha Thanks Stefano. It's a fantastic little camera. I think the fully manual nature of it and advance placement scare off the less experienced in film. Otherwise this would be much higher on the radar I'm sure.

    Hey man great video! I recently came into a IIIa and it has the classic shutter stick and dim viewfinder. I was thinking about tinkering with it myself but wanted to ask if it was worth getting into or if I should just send it to someone to CLA? Im pretty handy and have taken a couple cameras/lenses apart but don’t want to start something I can’t finish. Im sure you can understand haha. Any advise/help would be greatly appreciated 🤙🏼

    • @graham_white
      @graham_white  2 роки тому

      Thanks Zach! It’s a cope all shutter so it’s not overly complicated from my opinion. But it is very easy to mess something up badly if you’re not careful and cautious. Making sure everything is aligned and taking things apart and be careful of tension and coils. Usually with these it’s a simple fix. No matter what video or photo every step so you can ensure it goes back together properly.

    My first rangefinder was the QL17. I like the look and feel of those old rangefinder cameras. More than that of an SLR. I just picked up a Hi-matic E. It's as hefty and solid as the QL. I brought it back to life, but haven't used it yet. Unlike the QL, which is fully manual, the Hi-matic E is basically a P-mode rangefinder; also battery reliant. I'm kind of in the fence about it. I purchased it mainly for the 40mm 1.7 Rokkor-QF lens, which to my understanding, is much better than the lens on the Canonet. I initially wanted to go the 7sii route but didn't want to spend the amount they were asking on the bay. From my understanding, the lens on the E is identical to that on the 7sii. What's your take on the E? Thanks.

    • @graham_white
      @graham_white  4 роки тому +1

      I actually have a Hi-matic but it needs a complete overhaul before I can use it. I think they are very comparable to the QL but canon has the Name and also not requiring batteries makes it seemingly more reliable for cameras around this time frame. I would assume that is what gives it more hype to the majority who don't know all the little details. Minolta glass is fantastic and it wouldn't surprise me if it was better than the QL but I'm not sure it substantial enough to notice to the average person. And yes I wouldn't think there is a huge difference between the glass on the E and the Sii. Overall the E is just as good as the QL for sure, the only thing is you have the added concern of if it fails electronically its done unlike the QL.

    Dunno if I missed this - but another strike against usability is that you have to commit to a shutter speed before cocking. It's annoying. If you cock first and then decide you want to shoot at 1/500, you're gonna damage something.

  • @SchroderPhotography
    @SchroderPhotography 4 роки тому +1

    Graham I actually bought one of these at a yard sale a few weeks ago and if you check my channel im doing a shootout between 8 cameras including this one. But the iii you can use it manually by changing the Shutter speed first and after the aperature, they wont move together when you do that.

    • @SchroderPhotography
      @SchroderPhotography 4 роки тому +1

      If you still have the camera , the aperture knob is a little hook that you can depress and it will move independent from the shutter. The camera manual even says "Although it is possible to set shutter and aperture seperately as in conventional shutters, when the EV method is in use a change in shutter speed will automatically shift aperture setting"

    • @graham_white
      @graham_white  4 роки тому

      I removed the internal coupling to make it easier.

    • @SchroderPhotography
      @SchroderPhotography 4 роки тому

      @@graham_white Thats sound extreme and most of us would break the camera if we tried lol, its not hard at all. Just change the Shutter speed first then aperture.

    • @graham_white
      @graham_white  4 роки тому

      @@SchroderPhotography Surprisingly its not too complicated, and from my research a large amount of these cameras have the pins removed already. I just prefer it over the alternative. I can always re insert it if needed, takes 5 minutes.

    What you are missing with EV, Exposure Value, is that you could have a small card with the descriptions of the EV numbers. No meter needed! You can change your settings, for example, shooting sports and you need more speed? Add more and the aperture will always match. If you shoot with EV for much time, you see that it is genius. I learned on a Rolliecord V without a meter using the chart on the back. Genius. We have simply forgotten how photography works without a machine telling us what to do, or worse, doing it for us. Even a meter only tells you what would be the right exposure for 18% gray. Relying on it alone gets you a lot of 18% gray pictures. Ever wonder why your whites are gray and so are your blacks???! EV never does this.
