Jake, our Cardigan Welsh Corgi

- Just a happy little video of our dog Jake. He's an almost 4 year-old purebred Cardigan Welsh Corgi and we feel privileged that he's our dog. What a sweet boy! I wish you all could meet him. His coloring is dark brindle and white and while you may be familiar with the other type of Corgi, the Pembroke, there aren't as many of the Cardis around for people to see. We get stopped and asked a lot of questions when we have him out, like, "What happened to his legs?", "How did he get like that?" etc. :-)
A brief description of the breed's origin:
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi have only been regarded as separate breeds for 70 years. There are a number of theories that refer to the origins of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Some believe that both Corgi varieties are descendants of the Swedish Vallhunds that were brought to Wales by the Vikings in the 800s. Another theory is that the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is the older of the two Corgi varieties, and that it was brought to Wales by the Celts in about 1200 BC. The name Corgi is derived from the Celtic word for dog. The breed was developed in Cardiganshire Wales. The breed has a number of natural talents including herding, hunting, and guarding. Because of their low stature, they were able to move out of the way whenever a cow kicked. Both Corgi varieties were interbred until the 1930s, but breeders eventually wanted to accentuate their differences. Today, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is most heavily utilized as a companion dog.

Thanks! His breeder is really excellent. He got his championship at 9 months, then at 2 years was sold to the woman we got him from. She had a bad back and was going to need surgery to fuse some discs so she couldn't lift him to put him in her van anymore and needed to find a home for him. That's where we came in. I'd been in contact with his breeder for over 5 years waiting for an older retired show dog. Jake is the perfect dog...albeit a couch potato. *sigh*
Hey Kate, good to see you too. We're in Connecticut. The vid was shot on Oct. 11th at peak fall color season. Since then we had an inch of snow on Oct 15th (a shocker, only lasted a day though) and about 3" of rain today, so the leaves are looking a tad past their prime now! Autumn is my favorite time of the year. We were married on Oct. 4th, 12 years ago, and honeymooned in Vermont (on a Llama farm!), so you can tell it's our favorite time of year!
Oh he is so cute! And he makes the perfect contrast to the fall colors. Thanks for showing us how beautiful it is up there! Nice to see you Deb.
Jake is adorable..Just precious. Thanx for posting. :-))
Jake is totally adorable Debbie
:-)
How are you, i miss you
x hugs x
Jake!! Great to see you! You are a natural on camera..:) Woof, woof!!
Do my a favor little buddy..talk to your mom..tell her we miss on YT!! She needs to do a VLOG!!:)
xoxo
I too almost commented on his weight! Glad your helping him slim down. Keep up the good work. I live in eastern Connecticut and have two caridigans!
Hi Judy! Yep, he loves to go out and poke around. We have a big rock pile from when we had to blast the granite ledge to put in the septic system and chipmunks run in and out of it. he thinks that is especially fascinating. Maybe he wants to herd them? ;-)
Thanks, Caseysmom2, he's a very sweet, gentle dog. They are sometimes called the "yard long dog" because they are about 3 feet long. You're right, that does make for back problems if you don't watch their weight. We've only had him one of his 4 years and he has lost 10 lbs., but he still needs to loose more, it's difficult because (like me) they just look at food and gain weight. We feed him very lightly and only a cup a day of very good food (Timberwolf) so I think that's helping.
Hey girl...long no see! How have y'all been!
Awwe...Jake is so dang cute!
Oh... How pretty it is there!
HugZ you little sugars! JoJo
Jake came to us nearly 25 lbs overweight when we adopted him. With the help of high quality food, our vet, and a lot of work he's lost 5 lbs in a year. If you know the breed you know they put on weight easily and take it off slowly. You aren't telling me anything I don't already know. You shouldn't judge until you know the facts.
Yes, Jake is doing well :) Thank you for asking! He continues to lose weight, but slowly, Loves to herd his two cat siblings and us! He does hate snow, we got 16 inches this weekend and he was not pleased! :) Although he loves to run after the tractor as my husband plows. Although he loves to eat ice "bones" and brings in big chunks of ice to chew up! he is quite the comic!
Great dog. I lost my Cardigan in a divorce. She fed Bonnie Brae the way she eats too. SO TOO BIG for a little dog. The good news is Corgi AKA show couple now have her and she is properly cared for now. TREATS are a bad thing. she and I did agility for a short run. I know you are working hard with your Corgi... and more power to you :)
So great to see you are still out there! Jake is adorable and where do you live! The scenary is AMAZING!!!!! I love fall
Thanks for clarifying. It's been a struggle with Jake and I worry about him, hence my reaction. We love him to pieces!
Hi Liz! I have this Friday off and the people I work with want me to dress Jake up for Halloween and bring him in to see them. LOL I told them no way I would have time to make him a costume between now and then. I think it would be great to knit him one for next year though! ;-)
JoJo! Hi there, yes, I've been semi-missing in action most of the summer. I hope to be back making vids more regularly and getting caught up with people on YT. I've missed it, but time has been scarce. Lets hope winter slows life down! ;-) Hugs to your 4-footed babies!
He's beautiful!! =D
Ohhh! Jake is adorable!!
I had a Pembrook Corgi...she was my first dog and we did everything together! She's been gone 2 years now. I miss her every day still.
He sorta looks like a short legged border collie! But we know better. ;0)
Hi Joyce!! How are you doing? Jake reminds us of a border collie too. Rafe's mom and step-dad had a border collie named Danny, who has since passed, but Jake looked a lot like him, only with very short legs! Good to see you!
Thank you, you would love a Corgi, I know we do! The link to the music can be found if you click on (more info) in the upper right hand corner of this page. It's royalty free and you can use it all as long as you give the musician, Kevin MacLeod, the credit. This particular piece is called "Padanaya Blokov" and the one at the end is called "Organ Filler". If you have any more questions about Corgis, just let me know.
HAHAHAHA!! Jake would make a great tattoo! Actually, Rafe would love to get Jake's face tattooed on him somewhere. Jake likes to lay in his bed on his back with his belly and feet in the air. Rafe said he wanted that tattoo on his own belly. I just shake my head...LOL!
Hi Twish! I'm doing well, how are you? I'm slowly coming back to YT and starting to watch videos more. It's been a crazy spring/summer/autumn and I hope things get back to "normal" (whatever that is!) soon. :-)
@ravensky23 Wonderful story! I cant wait to get a corgi of my own. :)
@ravensky23 It wasnt to judge you, i only said it to be kind though its always a rather sensitive subject. Lots of dogs are overweight and the owners never realize it until its too late. So im sorry if i sounded harsh.
I'm sorry to report that our Jake passed away on Father's Day, 6/16/2013. He was only sick a short while, he died of Lymphoma. We are heartbroken. He was the best boy ever, right up until the end. I'm leaving this video up here as a tribute to him. To remember happier times.
