Any input on Matt Mills 223 on Guns And Dynamite AKA Gooder. I thought it was a top 5 run. Curious what your opinion is compared to Andrea’s run right after and what you would’ve marked that run?

This obviously was a shootout run

I love that horse, but I agreed with the judges and did not have Matt in my top 5. His stops are the contention with most people, because if you watch just the section where he goes to the ground and performs his slide he is excellent. However, when judging you start the maneuver as soon as the previous is finished. So once the lead change on the circles is complete all of what that horse does is taken into account, until he lopes off out of his rollback, and so on with each successive stop. and his performance around the ends is where he lost credit to attribute to that maneuver. So the slide might be a +1 1/2 but if the approach is -1 you are not going to get as much reward on the score card.

@@upfordiscussionKainEmmons while I don’t disagree I am not a judge but saw top 10 runs let’s say that I would call sloppier on some things maybe less willing is a better term. I also feel like Matt as well as a few others are always a few points behind walking in the gate. I know just enough about NRHA, NRCHA, NCHA to know that their is politics in all of it. While I sometimes see things different doesn’t mean I’m right. I am very interested to see how Matt does this year on the yellow Gunnatrashya Colt. The Colt looks super athletic and strong and talented probably more so than the Bigstar horse he rode last year.

You did not share what Andrea's reasoning, that made sense, as to why he did not pick Gambler for the TRFAM? So curious???
The one other observation which is a factor in lots of other sports as well but was particularly pronounced in this year's competition...was the draw. The first couple horses in my feeling were definitely at a disadvantage because the energy of the crowd had not coalesced, as well the weather event that was heading toward Las Vegas was effecting the overall mood. Obviously someone at the end knows how much they have to push or not to put things over the edge. I don't have any answers as to how that could be offset with the judging but it was definitely an obvious factor in this year's competition. As they say, 'the luck of the draw' but with the stakes this high it is a shame.

What I was told (third hand) is that Gambler was more affected by the sponsor cutouts on the side of the judges chairs and Andrea did not want to risk having him spook in a circle.
I would agree in a normal derby setting with hours of horses later in the draw can give you an advntage. However, when its less than 2 hours of total show time, the draw is going to play less on judges than most other conditions. Going back through the runs Jason is the only one other than Martin Muehlstaetter who didnt have one obvious mistake or hiccup in their runs. And Jason's horse performed at a higher caliber than Martin's on that night, as well as several other horses who had mistakes but performed incredibly high level maneuvers (i.e. Gina)

@@upfordiscussionKainEmmons Really appreciate, the Gambler answer, which now does make a lot of sense...is very interesting to know these top guy's thought process😉
I was hoping for a head to head between Amazing and Gambler, since they are practically full brothers and same birth year etc. Though from this story where Gambler may have a bit of advantage in ability (purely speculative) Amazing may be steadier in mind...can't say I have ever seen one that seems more nonplussed but sharp as anything.
Anyway, nice to see Jason win with that 2017 horse...the stars sure aligned that year for producing some of the greatest.

His first set of spins were average for that particular horse. Which are considered to be good or very good by industry standards. The rest of his run (in my opinion) never dipped below very good again and his consistency throughout the pattern is why he won the event.
