      I saw this in a one-screen cinema that opened in 1936, in the city where this movie was filmed (Toronto). It was my first time there, the kind that had statues by the screen. It’s still there marquee and all but it’s an event space now.

    For some reason, this sinking scene makes me more uncomfortable than the sinking scene from Titanic

    • @maximillian1109
      @maximillian1109 3 роки тому +11

      I just thought about that! I think it is how the scene is shoot from Alec’s/Blackie’s perspective.
      A young kid and/or a horse are not gonna be able to grasp the situation, so they dont know what is going on. It is pure chaos and terror and panic, and they are just pushed around or held down until they find a way out.
      Titanic meant to show show the grand scale of the tragedy, point out how many lost their lifes and what a massive ship the Titanic actually was. It is massive and the tragedy grips you, but it is impersonal.
      The Black Stallion’s goal was to show a shipwreck from the single pov of a kid and/or a horse, the sinking itself not as important as the cruelty, terror, and confusion of the individual experience.
      And it makes sense. Titanic had a lot of responsibility when depicting a real life catastrophe like that. They needed to kinda show jut how massive the even was, pay respect to each and every person who was there that say, and that could only be done by zooming way out and show the whole thing, interlaced with the more personal struggles of Rose and Jack.
      The Black Stallion depicts a fictional ship with fictional people, and it does not matter if most are just glanced over as living props for Alec to interact with. It is about him, and him only.

  • @YourForbiddenMicrowave

    As a fellow siren enthusiast, If you all want to know why the ship’s horn sounds like that it’s because it’s a steam whistle and because of the water splashing onto the ship is muffled the sound because it was blocking the air flow or steam. It is sounding in the so called general emergency alarm tone 7 short 1 long blast. Once the fire started to blow out of the cowl vent at 3:32 the whistle was activated for out of control fire and to abandoned ship. You can tell the whistle is being muffled because on the the second cycle of the whistle at 4:11 it sounds muffled at the beginning but it gets louder at the end because it is blowing some of the water out of it due to the air pressure coming out of it. The final blast when Alec falls of the ship you can hear the actual sound which is 465 hz for a second.

I eventually forgot about it, but years later, when I watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade for the first time, during the climax of the boat chase scene I lowkey had a mini panic attack. For whatever reason, that scene in that movie will always be more terrifying to me than the "He chose poorly" scene. This scene was that reason. Now that I'm older, now. I first saw this movie when I was 9, about 16 years ago, and even though I haven't seen it since, which is a crime, because I remember much of it being really good, the scene that was burned into my mind was this one.
    God, that ship's propeller slowly turning and creaking... It's like something straight out of a Steven King novel. This movie is responsible for installing my fear of "submechanophobia" as it's apparently called, which I still hold to this day.
    Also, I thought that I was just weird for having this fear, but apparently I'm not the only one, judging from the comments section on this video.
    Again, also, the cobra scene really freaked me out as a kid, but this scene was way more memorable.
    Edit: when I watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade for the first time, during that one scene (if you know, you know) I kinda freaked out. Don't know why, because it wasn't even portrayed as underwater, but I guess the seeds of terror sewn by this movie finally germinated.

    It's also odd how, very often, the movie is so much different than the book. In the book, the ship is struck by lightning towards the end of the storm, and according to the author, "seemed almost cut in half" by the lightning strike. In the movie, there's a huge fire on board during the entirety of the storm, but no lightning. The book makes no mention of a massive fire on the ship.
    It's also different in how, in the book, long before Alec falls into the ocean, the ship is not moving with it's engines dead. But in the movie after Alec falls overboard, the ship's propeller is still rotating even as the ship sinks by the bow.

    • @doodlemunchkin2222
      @doodlemunchkin2222 3 роки тому +5

      Well if lighting did strike it, it would very likely cause a fire, plus I’m pretty sure the engine is just about dead considering how the propeller is barely moving, not nearly enough speed to keep the ship moving.

    • @MiyahSundermeyer
      @MiyahSundermeyer 3 роки тому +4

      They never mentioned how the fire started. The sad thing is Alec loses his father.

    • @maximillian1109
      @maximillian1109 3 роки тому +6

      Thats because while in a book written from a kids pov, it makes sense that he would believe a bolt cut the ship in half. He saw a storm, heard and saw close thunder/lightning, and the ship started to sink. He might even have read about the titanic and how that ship broke in half, causing false memories.
      In a kivie however where we experience a much more unbiased version of events, the idea of a ship being split in half because of a lightning strike is not just impossible, but would also cause for a very unrealistic and silly moment during a scene meant to be scary with its raw realism.

    • @downhomesunset

    • @maximillian1109

      The ship is burning internally, and the flames are probably so hot, strong, and fueled that what water manages to get inside will just evaporate or boil. Just like how people have died in subs due to explosions and fires that only gone out after a hole was made in the outer layers.
      This ship is not actually sinking, it is burning, and at the end you can even hear the final explosion that finally opened up the ship to be flooded.
