I trained in shotokan karate back in the 80s and it was all about stretching the legs to allow the hips to open up to perform the side kick throwing the hip and leg snd twisting the rear foot around so the toes faced away from you we did hundreds bof this type of kick When I started Taekwon do I was already able to break correctly and my side kick was powerfull and direct contact with what ever I hit That was the old karate way and was still the best martial art that I studied I am a 3rd Dan black belt aged 58 years old.
you are doing kind of Bruce Lee Hop Side kick to close the gap. but the korean "3 Steps Tiger" is a better manuveur shown in you tube in TKD 9th Dan Test.
@Rupert5850 It depends on the training cycle, at the moment I start with heaver sets between 3 and 5 reps on compounds, followed by sets of between 8 and 15 reps on the exercises that follow. Usually one working set on the first exercise (not including 2 to 3 warm up sets) the exercises that follow I usually do 3 sets. But things like calves I may do 5 sets.
@@jkgardiner thank you for your response, really appreciate it! I've been watching and saving your videos, I love them! I started training karate this year January, working towards my green belt now, I am 42 this year and I am absolutely loving it! I've been active all my life and used to compete at pentathlon . Since then I couldn't find the right activity that would really consume me and gave it my 100% Until I tried Karate ❤️ and you're truly inspirational! Could you do a little video on how to improve the hip work please?
@@jkgardiner yes please, the hip mobility or how to master using the hips to generate the power from when jabbing, punching, blocking and kicking. I guess it's something that becomes a second nature hopefully soon 🙂
Yes! Thank you Sensei!! Can't wait to see Yoko Geri Keage. Great stuff to work on for sure.

This was my favorite kick. I knocked out many fighters.
It was long back. I was a national player from 1990 till 2000.
Old school karateka 👏👏👏

Sensei san! Need you advise..... About a functional or a strength exercises, with one is important???
Strength exercises are functional. Squat, deadlift, bench press, pull ups etc
@@jkgardiner these are strength exercises, the muscles become enslaved, which reduces the speed of the blow
@Rupert5850 no, stronger muscles are more functional muscles. I have only used these type of exercises in my training
@@jkgardiner How many reps and sets do you do?

Are these stretches good to do anytime or prior to training/ tournament?
Any time, just make sure your body is sufficiently warmed up

@@andrejkakoperova1744 I'm glad to hear you find my videos useful. Do you mean a video on improving hip mobility or something else?

Please the video is more than enough, no need to add music
