    Great tree collection, pots and landscaping, Nigel ! The ficus on board at 27:34 - the reason why your roots are not growing outwards is probably bcos of excess wetness in the moss base. No incentive for the roots to go looking for water. But some of your other ficus roots are spreading on the wooden table, bcos they don't have enough water. So probably you could keep the base of the tree drier and spray the outer parts of the board to draw out the roots.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Vinny, I was thinking the same, I'm taking too good a care of the tree! I have been letting it dry out more lately, nothing yet, but I'm hopeful!

    The issue with the ficus on the board could have something to do with the fact that you used a pressure treated board. It's possible that the tree doesn't like the chemicals in the wood.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 років тому

      I made sure it wasn't treated. I think I was watering it too much and the water collects at the base of the tree, due to the curve in the board. I think the roots need more oxygen, I'm going to try letting the roots dry out more and see what happens! The roots grew well last year. The board wasn't as old as some of the ones on my bench, this could be a factor, the wood may not be decomposed as well as the ones in the greenhouse. The sap in the wood may be too fresh and could be slightly toxic to the tree?
      Thanks Paul, I'll see how it goes!

  • @paulagoller7893
    @paulagoller7893 5 років тому

    Enjoy these videos very much. Would like to know how they finished in the show. Any way to find out? How do judges react to your animal dioramas?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 років тому +1

      There is no judging at our shows, all the members are encouraged to display some of their trees, no matter what stage of development they are in.
      The trees in the show are like paintings, you can like or dislike a certain style, but in the end, it's all just a matter of the personal taste of the person viewing the trees. I consider a tree or planting successful if it evokes a memory or feeling of a different place or time in the person viewing it. Is the tree just looks like a bonsai and doesn't take the person on a magical trip through their memories, than I consider it unsuccessful.
      Some people really like my trees, others not so much. I feel it is important to create a bonsai that appeals to yourself and hopefully some other people will share your tastes!

  • @markmondrinos7721

    Hi Nigel - Thanks as always for the entertainment. I would love to hang out in your garden - it looks like an escape into the wilderness. While you were in the greenhouse I was hoping to see the root over temple ficus, what is the status of that planting?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 років тому

      It is starting to grow really well now. It got a lot of scale insects in the winter that weakened the tree and a few of the major branches died off from lack of light. The planting is so heavy, it's hard to move around. I may have to plant it in a lighter pot!
      I'm hoping to get it back into good shape before the winter! It's sitting outside getting the good sunshine.

    A question please. With the fence now put up by the neighbours does this affect your light/ sun I’m trying to work out your southern aspect ?
    Keep up the great work you do

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 років тому

      It doesn't affect it too much, it is starting to cast a bit of a shadow on the hedge beside the fence now, maybe as fall approaches, it will start to shade the benches. They still get good sunlight so far. When the sun is low in winter, it will definitely shade the area. I can always move the benches farther away from the fence if shade becomes an issue, but I think all will be well until the frost hits!

    Hi Nigel,
    I just rescued a very unhealthy group of 4 jade trees just under a foot high clumped together and have proceeded to take off the lower branches to get that straight top heavy look. i have repotted them into a shallower pot and am now letting them adjust to it all. Quite a few of the leaves are very thin and wrinkled and are not the thick succulent green they should be. What would you reccomend water and sunlight wise to try to make them more happy? Thanks and love the channel

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 років тому +1

      It is best to keep the roots dry until the pruning cuts have healed, this can take a week or two. You can mist the leaves to help keep them from drying out and keep them in an area of high humidity. The Jades in my greenhouse will grow roots from the cuttings into the air and the cuttings will actually start to grow with no soil! A plastic bag with air holes over the Jades will help keep them humid after misting them. Be careful not to overdo the humidity or they could start to rot if the soil gets wet.
      After a few weeks, I would begin to water them with the mister at first and when new growth begins, start to water the soil more thoroughly, but always let the soil dry out between watering.

    Hi Nigel, The Cedar on the Rock looks great. You mentioned you keep some of your plants in the greenhouse. How hot does it get on sunny day? over 40 degree centigrade? Doesn't it burn the plans?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 років тому

      It does get up to 40 most sunny days, on some days it will reach 45. I mist the inside of the greenhouse often in the hot weather and if I'm not home, I'll leave the door open to keep it a little cooler. If I didn't mist the trees with cool water, they will go limp in the afternoon. They always perk up towards the evening if this happens. I mostly keep Ficus and Bougainvillea bonsai in the greenhouse, they like the heat, but many other species seem to do well in the high humidity too.

    I've noticed that you've stopped introducing yourself as part of KW Bonsai on your videos. Are you no longer with the society? I love that rock you've got the cedar on. I recently was given some cedar saplings by my father-in-law from his 100 acre wood near Alliston, ON. Do you have any advice on winterizing them? I don't currently have a greenhouse, so I'm thinking I'll need to bring them indoors for the winter (at least into the garage). Love your videos! Thanks again!! :)

    • @TheBonsaiZone

      I am still a member of the KW bonsai society, I changed the intro to The Bonsai Zone when I monetized the channel. The KW bonsai society is a non profit club, so I didn't want to associate the club with me making any money from UA-cam. The Cedar trees need a good cold spell over winter. Normally they are very hardy and can sit outside all winter. With a younger tree, I would try and plant the tree, pot and all, in the ground for the winter. I would put some screening around it to stop the rabbits from chewing on the trunk. Thanks Meredith!

    Hi Nigel, i Just started with the bonsai hobby. Wat kind of soil or ground do i use for the ficus Trees. I have microcarpa ginseng and a Tiger bark. They are Both in the standard kind of black sand from the shop. I feel like the black sand alone is not good for a proper drainage.
    thank you for your video's. And much from Holland.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 років тому

      The Ficus trees like a really loose free draining soil. This type of soil does require frequent watering, especially if the tree has a lot of top growth. The roots will fill the pot quickly and they can dry out several times on a hot day. Ficus trees love warmth and humidity, greenhouse conditions are ideal, but they can also grow very nicely outside on a bench. I would recommend misting them frequently. I use 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface as my soil mix. Here is how I water this soil....

    Nigel, My name is Ryan I live on Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound, Wa, US. I've been a fan of your show for a 2 years now, you are a wonderful teacher. Inregards to the Ficus Religiosa on the board, have you considered that the board is pressure treated wood? Perhaps the chemicals in wood are interfering with root growth?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 років тому

      I made sure it wasn't treated. I think I was watering it too much and the water collects at the base of the tree, due to the curve in the board. I think the roots need more oxygen, I'm going to try letting the roots dry out more and see what happens!
      Thanks Ryan

      I pick out moss from the sidewalk in front of my house, it grows well in the cracks between the panels. I have always collected my moss or re used it from other trees. Some of the moss grows all by itself on the surface of the soil after about a year. Moss tends to grow anywhere if the conditions are right, it requires good draining soil, sunlight and lots of water and fertilizer. I have to water and mist the moss up to 4 times a day in hot weather to keep it green.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  6 років тому

      As I develop the root system, I also size the pot to suit. The aim is to have the soil dry out daily. This stimulates the roots to grow and search for water. Too big a pot and the soil stays wet for too long and the roots don't grow as well. As I grow my root base larger, I also increase the pot size to suit. Growing a root base slowly and carefully will result in beautiful miniature looking roots! Here is a video on this....
