Beautiful song. Thanks for sharing! You got me into FM about a year ago, because you were reviewing some of your favorite albums, and FM Black Noise was one. I decided to give them a shot and it was the best decision.
Thanks for the needle drop! FM is one of my favourite bands! I've met them back stage a number of times before and after their shows. In fact, I run the FM forum on Facebook. Sadly, their electric violin & mandolin player on this album, Nash the Slash, passed away in 2014. But I do have one correction. The Passport Records pressing is actually the *second* pressing of the album. The first pressing was a limited run of 500 by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation whose studios the band used to record Black Noise. If you look at the FM entry on Wikipeida, you will see the first pressing's cover, which some refer to as the "manhole cover" artwork. It was the second pressing by GRT/Passport records that has the fantastic art work by Paul Till. Very nice looking turntable. Sounds great playing through my Sony AVR through Klipsch floorstanding. Heard no speed variation. I’m 59, have a ton of music in my collection, and never heard this song before. Love it!
@vinyl tv, do you find this AT440ML to be thin in the bass and too trebly? I'm looking at getting the VM540ML (which I believe is the replacement) and the detail and separation and sound stage seem top notch, just worried about the items mentioned above.
20yrs ago I'd get heaps of records from thrift stores for about 50 cents each. People were throwing all their records out then. I even got given them or you'd see them just sitting on the kurb being thrown out. Now it's done a 360. People are throwing CDs out.
The moral of the story is don't throw your music out just because something new comes along I remember the days when everybody was ditching their records I grabbed up everything I could back then the 90s was a great time for collecting records and old hifi equipment for free i remember seeing all sorts of really good turntables receivers amps speakers crates of records sitting on sidewalks glad I kept all that stuff and when it comes to cds buy em up now before it becomes a hipster fad to get into collecting them they will fetch the same ridiculous inflated prices records are going for now
Great Music choice. Have you tried the Rega Carbon cartridge? For a $60 dll cartridge, it performs very well. Maybe it'll make a good combination with your fluance rt81.
Hi Craig I have a question. When do people know when to replace a worn cartridge? Is mine worn? I own my late father's Ferguson System 25 seperates system and it sounds great to me. I've replaced the stylus a few times, but it still has the original Shure cartridge from 1980. I've owned it 7 years and played it constantly and obviously it's been well used since 1980! Maybe do a video about cartridge lifespans and your opinions?
The cartridge costed a lot more than the TT. I have considered going that route. I have an Ortofon 2M Red on a Pro-ject Carbon Debut III I got a good deal on. What are your thoughts on the Ortofon 2M red and what would you switch to? I'm assuming a micro-line of some sort. Perhaps Ortofon 2M Bronze.
Interesting, think you have another convert to FM ;-) Discovered there are 2 FM bands Canadian and British As for the Fluance RT80 - I purchased and returned same day, QC and after-sales is non-existent
Thank you for the video, everything sounds great ! I just have one question : what kind of alignment protractor did you use to install AT440mla ? I have the same combo, and all the protractors make me move the cartridge way too forward. Yours seems to sit somewhat centered on the shell.
3:02 is the coolest change I've ever heard.
More needle drop Mr. Craig thanks 🙏🏼 a lot
I love the clarity of the xylophone
This feels like a cool mix of The Beatles vocally and the instrumentation of Rush plus Genesis.
Great sounding cartridge, shame that the Fluance is not available in Holland.

Wow! I can't believe I never heard of these (Canadian) guys. I just ordered a copy of "Black Noise" on Amazon.com.
You should have a listen to an Australian band called Crossfire album called direct to disc.
I have the CD pressing of the album from 1994, and it sounds just as impressive.
If you want an inexpensive but expensive Cartridge I suggest you try a Sumiko Blue Point 2. Might be interesting.
this will probably be the next cartridge i get
Good thing is that the High Output version can be used with MM stages.
Nice looking turntable, is the overall height of tonearm adjustable?
Have the same couple: Fluance RT81 + Cartrige AT but 440mlB
P. S. Phono preamp Cambrige Audio 651p
Thank you, Craig for all you do. Great video & content...

Konstantin Maslakov he used a free protractor downloaded from vinyl engine
Thrift store finds -LUV 'em. But their getting harder and harder to find, alas -
How do you clean your records?
At the moment I just have a DAK dry, anti-static record brush. I haven't found a wet solution that I can both afford or trust.
Vinyl TV I'm also finding it difficult to know what to trust. I've found no objections to just using distilled water though. What are your thoughts?
@Vinyl TV try a Record Doctor V. Wet solution with a vacuum. Under $200. Records dead quiet.
Sounds like you could do a vocal cover of this and be spot on.
Luv it dude... That is 1 Awesome turntable. :-)
