Hi would love to know what you think of my 17 year old grandsons cover of this. He needs just 1 more sub to get to 1000 milestone. ua-cam.com/video/bCulyjnA_dI/v-deo.html 💕
I’ve listened to this song quite a few times just recently and I’m just amazed at Joni’s writing abilities. I’m in my 70’s and it’s taken me too long to really listen to the words and this song is one I want to hear over and over.👍👍
Her "River" arrangement on the "Blue" album is really, really, much more complicated note-wise, and it took this Live version to the absolute highest level.. This little blond girl from Canada has to be an absolute genius on ALL music she wrote and then playing the Dulcimer, Guitar, and Piano with such beauty and feeling that only so many are Blessed to have such natural talents.. Thank you, Joni Mitchell !! I pray that you and yours will always be well..
Yes, beautifully said. Having such a gift is such an awesome responsibility as well. I never discount the amount of will and work that goes into realizing that potential.
I lost father of my daughters short before Christmas... So this song always puts tears in my eyes. Lots of love in this song and over the world beauty. I just love this song!
Very sad, Vita, sorry. I lost my Pepere (grandfather) 3 days before Christmas in 1966. I was 11. I lived with him and Memere (grandmother). He was my everything.
Emotional dynamics playing the piano. This was when this song was still a fresh chapter in her life. A song she rarely played live later, perhaps so as not to relive it.
I think that having been a "folkie" during the sixties and seventies, this song and the artist fit me perfectly. Absolutely beautiful. The texture of her voice is impeccable. The light touch of the piano highlights the simultaneous power and wistful nostalgia of Mitchell's singing.
This song always makes me cry. It’s probably one of the most beautiful and sad Christmas songs I’ve ever had the pleasure of singing and crying too. ❤️
What a beautiful song! I first heard Ben Platt's version from 'The Politician,' and I loved the high belted note on that one, but this one by Joni Mitchell is, all in all, is the best rendition of it that I have heard, and it just so happens that this is her creation, too. I would have liked to hear Eva Cassidy sing this also.
First time I ever heard this was on Ally McBeal when Robert Downey, Jr & Vonda Shepard sang it. Thought it was beautiful then. I had no idea it was a Joni Mitchell song. Chills when she sings it.
there is so much silence in the audience for being live - so much desire to listen to every moment....nothing but silence for this song.....how often does it happen live?
So this rendition, per Santa's Boots compilation, available over at the LMA and a couple of other torrent sites: 8. River Joni Mitchell Oct. 28 1970 Royal Albert Hall London England Aircheck Tape (not aired)
onemuddyguy - Yes, I know it's been 4 years.. If you can get a copy of Neil Young performing "The Needle and the Damage Done", it will most likely be the one I have on CD, and it sounds so beautiful !! Then he ends this song, and a huge audience starts clapping !!! They were apparently, totally Silent through this incredible song by Neil Young.. And I believe it was performed in the early 70's as well.. Happy New Year to you and yours !!
One of the best - though one of the saddest - Xmas songs ever. Hey it's Christmas, let's cut down trees! ;-) Wishing you and Tihun the best. Let's chat SOON.
She and James Taylor came back to Chapel Hill and went caroling with a family my husband knows. They say she wrote it during that visit, back in the 70's
I can't think of the times in my life where I wished "I had a river to sk8 away on!"
Its 2020, I'm 38 years old and I heard this for the first time last week. I am in love!

Now you have lived
So enjoy Linda Ronstadt's version, too. Karla Bonhoff does a lovely interpretation, too, on her new Christmas album "Silent Night."
Watch the movie Almost Famous

She is simply one of the best singer songwrighters ever.
this and “both sides now” makes me sob
This is such a beautifully crafted classic, yet she sounds apologetic when introducing it. She's such a modest genius.
God Bless Joni Mitchell!!!
How many of us have felt like this at sometime or another. It brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it.
Feeling like it right now 💔
Me
And I am feeling that way now. So many people dying at Christmas is so very sad.
This song goes straight through you. So beautiful, sad and meaningful.
"Blue" is absolutely wonderful! First heard it around 1970. I never imagined such beauty existed in this World.
I was not born in her era but I love Blue album so much. I am looking for a vinyl where its always sold out.
Thank you to my "adore" friend for sending me this! You heard my "skate away" soul's cry...
The One & Only…❤️
Still gets me everytime, truly beautiful
My absolute FAVORITE song by Joni Mitchell
I love how she fluctuates the high notes. Perfection!

As beautifully sung as it is written. A true artist.
Joni Mitchell is a Canadian treasure, her LP Blue is a classic. Love her music... and painting))

A palette of colors on canvas and in song. I love all that she paints.

Now, In the last strech of my life, this song become a mirror of the humanity.

I just love this song, the way she sings takes me to a very emotional space.
One of my favorite Joni creations. She's brilliant °
.
instant love affairs with a song are rare for me,but this one sorta blindsided me ,thanks Joni
A real genius at work. Beautiful beautiful beautiful.
Her voice always transformed my thoughts and mood. Loved her music and voice.
This song always makes me cry. It’s probably one of the most beautiful and sad Christmas songs I’ve ever had the pleasure of singing and crying too. ❤️
perfect......just perfect
love this lady xoxo
Dash & Lily brought me here. ❤️🎄 Beautiful song! Joni Mitchell is such a good songwriter. "A case of you" is my favorite from her.
Joni is just amazing. It's no surprise Led Zeppelin referenced her in Going to California. Love the rawness of this live version.
This is so cool and rare!!
Beautiful Voice.

Margo Price brought me here. What a song.
love Joni.
I enjoy her voice live, more than on production songs.
It's coming up that season again.
Roberta Joan Anderson, a remarkable human being; a remarkable life.

onemuddyguy It’s probably soundboard recording or something

I’m glad she changed the melody. The final version deepens the despair and sends it off into desolation.
I wish I had a river...
+mr7wi She was as perfect as chaos and as beautiful as snow.
yea a a a a a a .. yesssssssssssss
É a minha canção preferida!
"It's coming on Christmas"
Can't believe the quality of the recording. Must have been at least and iPhone 4.
I don't know the lineage, but it's probably nearly 50 years old... Thank God for the tapers :-)
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Estou chorando
I wonder who her “best baby” was? Graham Nash?
metaphor, fool.
She and James Taylor came back to Chapel Hill and went caroling with a family my husband knows. They say she wrote it during that visit, back in the 70's
Maybe 60's
Does this refer to the baby she gave up for adoption?
@@super8guy Listen her baby here: ua-cam.com/video/Am4dameDRGA/v-deo.html.
😀
I assume this is about a break up?
davedaddy101 yes, with James Taylor
you are a smart one
yep, mrs claus after breakin up with santa.
Her break up with Graham Nash
I swear it was about her having to give up her baby.
Mesmo estilo que Alanis Morissette...
