Man I just really love it when I find somebody who digs the music of Townes Van Zandt as much as I do. And you can play it! And teach it! It’s a beautiful thing that you are doing. Thank you.
hey, thanks man. I really appreciate that comment. And i feel the same way. I was totally surprised by the lack of finger picking tutorials for all of these great outlaw country tunes and folk classics. Even a bunch of Dylan songs without good transcriptions and videos...and I thought, hey, maybe I could fill this gap. And as it turns out...it's like the perfect gig for me. I've spent a stupid amount of man hours learning a lot of these tunes a decade ago when I was honing my craft. Also spent the last 20 years as a private music teacher...and also happy to be an annoying ham in front of the camera! (i think that's due to my 15 year old self playing in punk rock bands and trying to win girls attention). So it all came together. Thank you internet! I've found my calling! On another note, if you're getting value please consider monthly support no matter the amount so I can get through the entire TVZ catalog!!

This seems to be just outside of my skill range which is perfect! It is testing me and I am slowly making progress. This lesson is fantastic. I find it to be clear, thorough, and has a great focus and accuracy on the technique. I really appreciate you and this lesson and look forward to exploring more of your content!

Me too!
One night at the Cactus Cafe in Austin, Texas I met a lot of local people that knew Townes and played Townes's songs, and I thanks I play Mr Townes songs often
yes! Same here. I talked w the owner of cactus at length, so nice. Even gave me an original show flyer!
The emotional part really got to me... I'm in my mid 20's, listen to Townes everyday.. Drink everyday... Brought a tear to my eye man. Thank you for sharing, I really appreciate it and so do many other on here.
I was being a bit silly and a lot serious. Drop me a line. MikesMusicMethod@gmail.com Would love to talk about all of this stuff with you via email or the phone. Best of luck, man. and God bless. Any other songs I could tackle for ya, any other concepts? Any other emo ramblings from a dude in his late 30s that could be of help? ha

Man I was listening to his album version for the first time today I was wondering if he was using a pick or Travis picking cuz I hear more than 2 bass notes in one chord section this tutorial suddenly make lot of sense now!
glad I could help! Yeah, travis picking is awesome. You can get a lot of great noise from one guitar.
Hey, that bit at 6:25-35 are exactly the opening notes on C in Pancho and Lefty. Seems Townes liked to recycle his picking patterns a lot, and that makes things easier to learn after a while:)
yes yes Polish friend of mine! You've got it. Dont get discouraged. Every little bit you struggle over is never a singular struggle. It's ALWAYS something that will be applied in the future elsewhere. Eventually the picking will come a lot quicker. Good to see ya posting. I emailed ya back!

Thanks, Mike. Really appreciate your work. I think (?) he switches to F earlier in the first line of each verse, which makes me like the song even more. Classic Townes...
ah!!!
This is unbelievable! Many years ago a dear friend covered this song for me. And she didn't go to the F early, and i criticized her cover and literally said, "Going to the F early is what makes this song so awesome and you botched it."
And ahh!!! You're right!!! I messed up my favorite part!

Chuck, thanks. I'm doing well. Summer's been great. Teaching is always a bit slower in the summer so had time a lot of time to spend with the kids and extra time to work on the channel.

Your vocal delivery and performance style kinda reminds me of Mason Jennings, and believe me that's a compliment from where I come from. It's nice.
well thanks, Lusid one. I dont know Mason, but i'll spin him. Any song/album in particular? Appreciate the words. I have a few originals on the channel. Or stream "Molaro For Illinois". How's the pickin going?
Hey man thanks for the video. Had fun learning this one. Do you have any advice for keeping your guitar in tune when using a capo? Do you re-tune your guitar every time you move it? Thanks in advance! This is Tom by the way, from Zoom last week 👍
hey hey Tom! Thanks for mentioning that. It's very helpful to have faces to these comments. Do you have a capo that's adjustable? You want one where you can turn a little screw and adjust the tension. I love SHUBB capos. And nope, dont retune. If i'm going to record I might, but not just for casual play, no.
@@MikesMusicMethod Yeah I have Shubb capo too! I find that even if I tune my guitar beforehand, after putting the capo on the fourth fret (as is the case for this song) my strings will be off...maybe it's my cheap strings lol. But I'll play around with the tension and see if it helps. Hope all is well on your end!
@@ssdd191 forgot! Remind me next Thursday and we can discuss. It might also be where youre placing the capo
I really love that Am. My way overthought analysis of the song is that Townes is essentially lying his ass off to the girl, who's crying because she thinks he's going to leave her. And he is going to leave, but it's really late at night and he's probably very drunk, so he's just telling her whatever beautiful things she needs to hear to quit crying and go to sleep. And that somber Am chord in the middle of a pretty ballad is the fact that he knows exactly what he's doing. We've all been there haha.
hahaha, so much over analyzing but you're probably right! hahaha

Nice PSA! The album Southeastern by Jason Isbell is the ultimate proof you can be a legendary songwriter sober.

@@CosmicAccident ha, yes! I spent weeks on Deep River Blues. And the other Townes tunes should keep ya bust for several months. Good luck!
I kind of hate you, because you make it all so easily understandable that every single mistake I make is totally my own fault and I realise over and over again that I am not a good guitar player and the pain in my left hand isn't because those things I am doing are hard to do but rather I have not yet trained enough to play this instrument so I need to keep going but aaaaah, my pinky hurts so much.
Nice video, awesome energy as always, thanks for making everything so clear, thanks for the tabs too!
And, what is that beautiful Guitar you are playing here?
mike the goat

That link works. Thanks! You are an awesome teacher!
This was great but can you please put the chord progression over the measures on the tabs I prefer to work on it that way then refer back to parts of the video later, thanks
Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. I've thought through this and the problem is it just makes the screen way clunkier. I know a lot of people use tablets or even phones, and if I include a chord symbol on top it makes the tab significantly smaller. I suppose I could mess around with adding the chord symbol next to the tab or somewhere more convenient. But i'm not sure it's worth the effort. In my newer videos I'm getting in the habit of saying the measure number before I play each measure. If you need the Chords they're included on the FREE tabs I have available on my website and just follow along with those. MikesMusicMethod.com. Is that helpful?
Every song I want to learn sounds so simple yet I can rarely get past the first chord without struggle and I usually give up :(
Harmon, don't be discouraged. These are NOT simple songs. Go to the "Travis Picking" playlist on my channel. And start with the first lesson. I promise if you do the first 3 and give it a few months you'll be able to get some of this stuff down! If not hit me up for a lesson. Don't give up!
any recent luck?
@@MikesMusicMethod I kinda stopped teaching myself songs, it's too frustrating, occasionally I might try to do it. After I learned all the open chords I became very content with just being able to jam over them , and then I finally got the hang of bar chords like 2 months ago. I wanna learn this song I heard today called Song For Irene, Eric Clapton, I haven't listened to much of him but he's good at finger style from the sounds of it.
@@harmondraws cool. glad to hear. Just keep in mind fingerpicking takes a long time! Just go slow. I'll check out the Clapton tune.
The link for the tabs no longer works, is it still available or should I transcribe it from this song?
! sorry. everything is at the new site...MikesMusicMethod.com the old link should be forwarding though as well, I'll remedy that. Thanks much for the heads up!
would it be too difficult for this to be my first song to learn? or should i start somewhere else?
your first song EVER? haha. Yes. Go to my playlist "travis style finger picking" and do the first few in the series there. Let me know how else i can help.
I ask you several weeks ago if I could use Zelle to give you a contribution.
send me an email at MikesMusicMethod@gmail.com
This is gold ahha
yes! glad you enjoyed. Please sub and like and consider the tip jar. And let me know what song to do next!
I got everything in the song except the fricken G chord part !!! :( lol
@@thoughtspiller you can do it, man!!
@@thoughtspiller and i'd love to hear you play it! upload it when you're done!
So you need a capo?
Nope. Just play it without a capo. You won't be able to play along to the recording. But I'm almost never playing songs in their actual key. I'm playing it in the key that fits my vocal range given the vocal melody.
hope that makes sense.
Thiam hle mai😘
Man this is just a chick magnet voice you got here :D
ha! Well, I wooed my wife, she's the only chick i need! One of my two daughters likes my singing. ;)
@@MikesMusicMethod Well then I'm not wrong, it just got the 3 ckicks of your life :D
Nice work anyway, very helpfull and very detailed 👍👍
Why is it so hard?! 😬 ill keep at it
haha, good question. This is one of Townes harder ones. It you stay stuck for several months check out my Travis Picking playlist and work through the first 4 or 5 videos to make sure your form and technique is solid.
Mike's Music Method will do! I actually know basic travis picking, but it’s a slightly simpler style and honestly I’m only ok at it. I really want to improve my finger style guitar skills.
En Espanol= Cojones
haha, yes indeed.
So glad I found your channel! I am just learning how to finger pick. These videos are super accessible for beginners, and the tabs on the website are a great back up. Thanks for the content!
thanks, Jordan. When i get the time i'm gonna work on some more beginner finger picking content. More concepts and drills than straight up songs, might be helpful for some struggling. Think that'd be helpful, or stay focused on songs? And thanks again, please sub, like and consider becoming a monthly contributor so I can keep the videos comin!
