The world of diminished 7ths is large and daunting. One of the easiest, and most obvious applications, is to to create haunting bubbly passages of madness. As a guitarist, harmonizing them is a breeze, but experimenting beyond the chord's harmony allows for even further descents into the pit of harmonic despair.
In jazz and classical, diminished seventh arpeggios played in much more sophisticated contexts. One day I'll approach those subjects but for now, I just wanted to have fun :P

They may not be the best for writing entire pieces of music, but for a phrase in a guitar solo or just one riff in a song, they are absolutely wonderful.

I’ve been on YT a long time and have never subscribed to anyone, I’ve always been in extreme death and blackmetal bands. Vocals/guitar. As I grow older and my hair grays I’ve opened up to more writing/listening styles. I dig your “teaching” method and your radio! voice is calming to me. I’m subscribing to you in hopes that after tomorrow or maybe the next day (the time I’ll dedicate to watching your stuff) THAT you’ll continue posting. Cheers buddy!

Great lesson! One of my favorite players, Jeff Loomis, uses Dim7 arpeggios a lot. My favorite example is from the solo in "The River Dragon Has Come" by Nevermore. It uses a repetitive pattern of these arpeggios alongside some chromatics in a way that works out to be really musical and a great fit for the song.
