The world of diminished 7ths is large and daunting. One of the easiest, and most obvious applications, is to to create haunting bubbly passages of madness. As a guitarist, harmonizing them is a breeze, but experimenting beyond the chord's harmony allows for even further descents into the pit of harmonic despair.
In jazz and classical, diminished seventh arpeggios played in much more sophisticated contexts. One day I'll approach those subjects but for now, I just wanted to have fun :P

Necrophagist

Any tech death song ever:
Not just Satan's chord, but Bowser's too ... if my childhood gaming memory serves ... ?
Ultimate Koopa from Super Mario 64
They may not be the best for writing entire pieces of music, but for a phrase in a guitar solo or just one riff in a song, they are absolutely wonderful.
Yes, I completely agree. Just a little splash and it takes a phrase to new heights. Use sparingly!
Malmsteen got busted
It's like spicy sauce, you want to add just the right amount
Nice vid. Thanks satan.
Daniel Nodland lol
Satan is a real legend
Yngwie Malmsteen - Arpeggios From Hell
That piece is fucking hard
Reminds me also at the beginning from Cavallino Rampante from YJM
Someone just found malmsteen

Andrei Grozea ah y e s
cool and, good
you'r P I L E No, the theory here is actually a fail.
As a metalhead, this is some of the best shit I've seen. I knew about diminished 7th for a long time but never knew how much I could get from them. That lick you played is seriously worthy of the best metal bands. Stellar. Thanks man!
Great demon-stration!
dude this is pretty epic, sounds very Cacophony-ish (band)
Jason Becker taught Marty the ways of the Tones of Hell.
really reminds me greatly of the Castlevania score to the video game from the original NES.
Mega Man 3 and Final Fantasy 6 came to mind.
Link and zelda
The secret to Rings Of Saturns sound
Great vid! The first moment I was aware of this kind of progression was in Opeth's "The Leper Affinity" around the 3 minute mark. Thanks for breaking down just what's happening with this "briny bubbling demonic sound" (awesome description).
Testament's "Confusion Fusion" from Practice What you Preach is an entire song written using Dim7 arpeggios.
Dude, I'm so glad you're publishing these lessons. I've been binge learning like mad from your channel. Now i need to practice! Thank you!
Some of the most unique content in UA-cam. Love everything you put out !
Love from India ❤️
Megadeth - Skull Beneath The Skin intro is a great metal example.
The break of Bad Omen too :)
You my friend are one of the best teachers I’ve ever came across. Thank you for all your hard work, we all appreciate it 🙌
i love how simple this is, and for such an amazing sound too! thanks for the lesson!!
this is some great stuff man!! keep it coming!!! it's amazing how much this reminds me of the harmonic minor scale
Wow! Satan seems like a nice guy.
Yeah he shares his knowledge
What else do you need from a devil
I'm Batman But my Christianity is against sharing.
Promiscuous Dope Fiends Official I know that and it's ok
God did create him. And arpeggios. HMMM
Ripp Russell but he never bothered to share it
You're the absolute man when it comes to your videos. Well spoken and not confusing to watch or learn from.
The only UA-cam channel I love to watch everytime... even when I sleep I use to listen to his teachings!... Awesome Jake!! Love from Nagaland_ Northeast India💕
This is awesome! Thanks for the great lesson!
The end piece sounds like a Mario Bros. castle level piece of music !! Awesome !!
I love your channel 🙏 such a treasure trove of knowledge on music theory
Been working on a song and have a section that I knew was bland and missing something. I think this is exactly what it needs. Subbed. You're a kickass teacher.
I’ve been on YT a long time and have never subscribed to anyone, I’ve always been in extreme death and blackmetal bands. Vocals/guitar. As I grow older and my hair grays I’ve opened up to more writing/listening styles. I dig your “teaching” method and your radio! voice is calming to me. I’m subscribing to you in hopes that after tomorrow or maybe the next day (the time I’ll dedicate to watching your stuff) THAT you’ll continue posting. Cheers buddy!
This got to me in the right moment!
Great video!!
Another awesome lesson! Love these vids. Hilarious intro :D
Brilliant lesson. Instant sub. Thank you so much .
Just recently found your channel. You were born to do this. Thanks for all these great videos.
I love how understandable you make all your videos,as a beginner it's really appreciated
Great video - thanks for the lesson!
Awesome video, great job!
Man your channel is a friggin gold mine in youtube, you deserve so many more views.
Your videos are absolute GOLD for me ! Thank you !
This is one of the best guitar lessons I've ever had. Thanks man!
Your instruction is top notch as always. You have helped me progress faster than I ever could just messing around on my own. I kinda want ro reguest an instructional for the solo to Bark at the Moon. It has been a long time goal of mine to nail that whole song but I am stuck on the last half of the solo. Thanks for the vids so far!
I’ve heard this exact sound before with the m3 interval sound, and I’m so glad I now know exactly what it was! I think I know what to add to a song I wrote a while ago…
Dude, these are super entertaining and EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you!!!
Great video bro.
Isolating those small shapes is really perceptive - that's exactly the kind of information that intermediate guitarists need.
Love you! This video helped a lot since I write death/prog metal (atleast trying to)
Your channel is pure gold!
Between the Buried and Me - Augment of Rebirth intro came instantly to mind after hearing the first arpeggio run. Figured out its secret with no prior knowledge of its tab. I'm proud, thank you, Jake!
Just loved your teaching jake 🙏
Ive been dabbling with guitar since my teens....(I'm now 40++ lol) playing " by ear and what sounds good"....after picking the guitar back up I wanted to truly learn and have been working on acalea learning the fret board correct and a much. I came across ypur channel today and am blown away at the way every thing you teach is explained in a way to not only understand but grab the guitar and start working on the lessons and see it all come together......got a new dedicated follower today great lessons!!!!
Haha, this was great, i loved the intro, great video!
Awesome lesson. Love it!!
Hi, Jake. I think you did a good job of discussing some of the things that writers and players can actually do with diminished seventh arpeggios and patterns in their music. Thanks for a straightforward, useful video.
great lesson, thank you!
I've learned more from watching your channel for a day than I've learned from 12 years of music lessons for four different instruments. I'm in shock that you don't have more subscribers, man.
You're a nice teacher :D ! Keep up the good work.
Really really great video. I love the way you explain the "evilness" in playing something so randomly cool. Just another badazz tool for the book my brother!! Cant wait to put this in some of my original wacky evil tunes...lmfao. Much love coach!
Great delivery of ideas
New sub
I NEVER comment on videos. I’m not even a guitar player (I play drums, learning bass, and I’m starting to compose) and I absolutely love your videos. The content is great, really knowledgeable and applicable. Not only that, but I can tell you’re really passionate about teaching, and I love seeing you have fun with it with these silly intros. Please keep it up! If I have any recommendations, I want to learn more of the modes of harmonic and melodic minor. Thank you again!
This is one of the best guitar lessons I've ever seen on UA-cam.
your videos are great. love the way you teach theory ima gonna sub you
BEST videos! Much love!
Entertaining! Thank for a great video!
Every experience leads to freedom ! Thank you Jake.
EVERYDAY YOU ARE MY MORNING COFFEE! EVERY MINUTE IS FULL OF LEARNING! THANK YOU! I CAPS ALL BECAUSE I GET EXCITED!
Fantastic, Jake!
Love it!
The piece sounds like dream theatre .... Thanx man!!! Really helped me.. always thought about how can I use dim7 sound !!?! I think after watching your video , some ideas grew in my head...
Another great lesson and explanation. the arpeggios reminds me of the scene in crossroads, the guitar battle with Ralph Macchio and Steve Vai.
thanks, your video helped me a lot
Testament’s “Eerie Inhabitants” comes to mind...
I just subscribed a few minutes ago thanks to a different video, but if I hadn't, I'd have subscribed purely on the basis of this video's thumbnail alone (Legend is my favorite movie of all time :-) )
Awesome video
Well done man
THAT COMPLETE PIECE WAS A MASTERPIECE!!!
WELL DONE YOUNG MAN...
You finally did it. Perfect.
Cool video! Was looking for a while for an idea of making a "pure f***ing evil sounding" thing. Glad I've found one. Thanx a lot! Like and sub.
Those sound so awesome
Awesome vid! The sound of these really reminds me a lot of Jeff Loomis's solo from The River Dragon Has Come by Nevermore
This is basically a video of how play like Jeff Loomis but like the simple way! Lol It's awesome though! Jeff just stretches the fuck out of these licks!!!
Great lesson! One of my favorite players, Jeff Loomis, uses Dim7 arpeggios a lot. My favorite example is from the solo in "The River Dragon Has Come" by Nevermore. It uses a repetitive pattern of these arpeggios alongside some chromatics in a way that works out to be really musical and a great fit for the song.
Jeff is God in human flesh in my eyes LOL. I wish I could turn back time and discover his music again for the first time.
This is awesome
thanks for a great video!
that was a really creative intro. lmao. was not expecting that. made my day
Blotted Science! Great lesson! SUbbed!
Nuts. Love it.
Thy Art Is Murder uses these a lot. It's cool that they have created so much content out of this kinda limited scale.
Sounds like endgame boss music >:)
im sure some zelda game has used this, maybe Links Awakening has.
Awesome vid funny fun and informative
I absolutely love you Jake
Cool I have this diminished run that's on the 1st and 2nd strings in one of my solos using part of one of these patterns and I never thought about harmonizing it. It's mainly in harmonic minor.
This channel is badass! It's also crazy to think I live like 55 minutes away from you in Roscoe, IL. I'm a music theory/technique nerd and play in the band Cacotopia.
You are awesome!!! Cheers from armenia!
Thank you!
Awesome video! \m/
So fun!
There is a Band called Viremia they also use a lot of diminished Arpeggios in a quite cool way.
Some Parts of your piece really remind me of a more soft Version of that band .
Nice Video as always
THANKS !!
Fkn awesome brotha!!!
Awesome its what I needed to know
Man!! You actually make the theory fun and interesting
For lazy people like me that's amazing!!
Thank you for that!
Heyy nice vídeo!! 😉👌👌
