Aside from the fact that the Chief Ganglander looked like an ornamental cat, is it likely that a top notch LordKingPin would give in to blackmail and hand over 20 big uns, BEFORE arranging an execution? Someone that high up would have Dennis’ final cigar the moment he made the initial demand. And there’s no way he’d be silly enough to get the sister’s ex-lover to be the Hitman. FGS!

Dennis was never the target. It was a set up for Phil. Dalton was smart. He knew Phil would bottle it and not kill Dennis. He stupidly thought Dennis would come to his office as planned and he would be able to persuade Dennis to kill Phil. Another plan of his may have been that Dennis would talk Phil out of it, take the gun and kill Phil himself. Either way, Dalton looked at Dennis as a son. Or as mentioned before, he was a secret paedophile who fancied Dennis when he was a young kid. That’s what he meant by having to pay him. It was clear what his plan was when he kept saying to Dennis, let’s get Mitchell once and for all. It was only when he admitted his involvement in Den disappearing, that he fucked up and Dennis went through with it and killed Dalton. It’s brilliant writing as those who understood the psychology of it, knew what Dalton’s real plan was. He never forgave Phil for halting his plans in killing Kate.
It's such a shame Jack Dalton didn't meet Johnny Allen I reckon they would both sort out Dennis out to be fair As they were both into gangs such as getting people to do there own favors silmer things in common
