I went to a pre-release event at my LGS. It was a smaller affair (partly because the store itself is quite small) with only about 10 players or so but I found it enjoyable. Met some nice people and saw a broad range of experience levels. Because of time constraints (the store didn't start the event until about 6:30pm), they did single-elimination and I lost my first match up but I had a good time and was going to have to leave early anyway, so it was fine. I will say that, as my first proper "limited" event for any CCG ever, I definitely think that I would much prefer a draft format over a sealed format in the future, at least for this game. I would say that the only frustration I had while deck building was that my sealed card pool and leader choices didn't combine well. My cards were very heavily slanted Yellow/Green/Heroism with a handful of good rebels but the only leader option I could field in those aspects was Jyn, which didn't feel like it fit very well. I understand that sealed is generally just a much more accessible format for the average player, and fair enough. I am planning to buy a booster box to use in a mini tournament with a few friends and I definitely want to recommend a draft format for that one. I haven't been into a CCG scene like this in quite a long time (since maybe 2002?). This game has been a nice, little adventure back into that space and I hope it does well. I would happily attend more events for it in the future.
Damn I wish i had that many pre-release near my area, the most I could go to was 3. I think saying that sealed is "all luck" is a bit of an exaggeration, I do however think it is a VERY luck-oriented format. The reason you didn't perceive that is because SWU as a game is quite skill-intensive and you have OVERWLEMINGLY more experience than the average folk (even within the TTS community you are considered one of the most experienced player). So even with a bad sealed pool your chance of winning remains very high. And I know that because it was the same for me. But I can guarantee you that a few months down the line, when people's skill evens out a bit Sealed will become a lot more luck-based... and that's actually a good thing for the purpose of pre-release. Pre-releases are casual events, so having a "luck-based" format makes sense and gives a shot at winning to everybody is a good thing.
Yes, I do think luck is much more pronounced in Sealed than other formats thanks to cardpool disparities -- but player and deck construction skill still play a very important role. It'll be interesting to see what my prerelease Sealed record ends up looking like once we get a few sets in and people are more experienced. I'll be surprised if I'm able to do as well then as I did this week.
Thanks for all of your videos on the topic! Used your drafting method to make solid decks in each of my three events. Are you coming to the tournament in Twickenham, England?
Happy to hear it was helpful! As for the tournament, I looked into it after hearing about their big prize pool but ended up deciding not to attend -- if it were in the States (or I were still in Europe) I would likely attend but the plane tickets from the US to the UK are rather expensive!
@@RossCooper I haven't lived year-round in Europe, but am often in Czechia for a month or two of each year for work -- I checked the flight prices out of curiosity and it would have been something like $110 round trip if I were still in Prague!
One of the players at my pre-release got a Jedi Luke from one of his packs (and stomped me with it) but I didn't really see a whole lot of what others pulled. I got a legendary in my own kit but it was just Black One and most of the rest of my card pool was just average.
Maybe my sample size was too small then. I got two booster boxes and I did two prereleases. I got equivalent hyperspace foils, legendary, and double aspect cards out of the 48 booster packs vs the 12 pre release packs.@@Webhead123
Too bad you didnt play against my friend. He is a legendary hearth stone player and he was undefeated in his first best of 3 games. He beats me most of the times lol.
I agree with your take on sealed, I never had a insanely strong deck, but if you play well, you can still win.

Went to prerelease, got 2nd place, but only out of four players :D I hope it will start to get popular here.

@@TowerNumberNine I bet! It was awfully late notice to be honest. Where did you live in Europe out of interest?

@@TowerNumberNine You would have been living the dream! Looks like you can save the money for Bobas and Vaders then!
The prerelease boxes seem to be loaded in comparison to the regular booster boxes when it comes to hits. Do you guys feel the same way?

1 minute into the video and have no idea, what's this about. A video game? a TV show? A board game? No clue.
It's about Star Wars Unlimited TCG, a card game -- this is in the title and thumbnail and this channel is mostly about it!
