The debt ceiling expires in March. They can't eliminate a 2T deficit in 6 weeks. Therefore, the debt limit needs to be extended. They want to eliminate it because its dumb. It doesn't actually prevent the government from wasting money. It instead just wastes time and leads to these convoluted bills to raise the debt limit, which are full of a bunch of unnecessary items in order to get enough votes.
It is now advantageous for Republicans to get of the debt ceiling so that it is not an issue when it needs to be raised. A few years ago, the crazies shut down the govt because they thought the debt ceiling allowed the govt to spend more money, but that’s not what it does. It allows us to pay back the money we have already borrowed. Since republicans are now in power, they dont want the news saying that they are raising the same thing that they railed against. Also now democrats can use the same function against the republican to shut down the govt. Which is the real reason why they want to take it away. They dont want the ability for the Republicans to look like they are for raising debt. Even though, it must happen for the USA to remain a good borrower.
