      No kidding about the rapidity and eloquence. I wonder how many people saw this on the TV and was turned on to radical politics, realizing that the ballot box is a waste? Many, I hope.
      The ballot box is the favorite avenue of the state and corporations to "address" public concerns thereby thwarting potential movements that threaten the status quo.

      Luke McIver I can't give you any legitimate statistical data or scientific studies of his effects.
      I can, however tell you Russell cleared up the confusion I had with how the world of politics and economics and war works.
      In the past, I didn't know why I should vote (just told I should) and what the issues were. For example, in the 2008 election, the only understanding I had is Obama is black. McCain is republican. Vote for Obama. After 9/11, I thought Saddam was involved in the Twin Tower attack, so I supported the war in Iraq (Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11).
      Now I am actually politically involved. I am taking baby steps by supporting Wolf-PAC.com and Bernie Sanders. Who knows where the future will take me and where "Russell's revolution" will end up.

      Sag Norm Brand does shed much needed light on how the world really works beyond the propaganda. If you want to take your political education further, I highly recommend Noam Chomsky. He's not an entertainer but he has devoted his life to how the world works and it shows.

      Bill O'Reilly and a bunch of comedians... Why FOX News and Comedy Central are on the same playing field when it comes to news just speaks to the insanity of the American people. FOX can't stand Steward and Colbert and they don't realize they are comparing their coverage to that of 2 comedians. True Stewart is much more out spoken and focused on some important issues, but he's still a comedian with a show on a comedy channel. As for Stephen Colbert, he has said it many of times that he has no interest in politics - he only covers it because it's popular and what people want. People are going to be disappointed when he takes over for Letterman because he will not be playing a character and he wont focus on politics and/or politicians. Having said that...it would fun to watch.

    12:55 "Socialism is just the politics of Christianity, the politics of common decency." - this is a fundamental truth, and Russell Brand is the first prominent person to speak it out.

    • @MemekingJag
      @MemekingJag 10 років тому +2

      It may be common decency to help those in need, but it is certainly not any morally good thing to force that ideals upon others. If you force those with money to distribute it to others, then it is no longer a philanthropic act, it's simply the tyrannical theft carried out according to a group who believes their ethical code is the right one. No act that violates an individual's rights in order to enact 'common good' is ever morally correct, no matter how popular the idea. It's the same logic used by countless dictators in history; "In order to benefit the public and the masses, we must violate individual rights".
      The only ethically stable method of governing is to protect freedom at any cost, and leave the rest to the individuals.

    • @awake.collective
      @awake.collective 10 років тому +2

      Jaginun I would say that money should not be distributed, I would say get as far away from the idea of money as possible. Give access to basic human rights. Give people what they need to spend money on. Free locally grown food,free water, shelter and a strong sense of community.

  • @EcoCurious
    @EcoCurious 10 років тому +104

    Russell makes a fantastic point about how women's rights and homosexual rights etc should be considered humanitarian rights. BUT sadly, I think he forgets that in order for people globally to create a revolution, they need to at least be on the same page when it comes to issues such as these. Sadly, a vast, _vast_ number of people, both in Britain and the US, still believe that homosexuality is a sin and that women should not have abortions.
    When O'Donnell was talking about America's elected representatives standing on just a single vote's difference, I think he was trying to explain how many Americans have voted for a representative that _does not_ back gay rights or women's rights, because much of America is not what we would call 'left wing'. How can we create a Revolution if so many people (almost a majority) still have this conservative mindset? You cannot undo generations of ignorance and intolerance when these ideas are so ingrained in peoples' minds. While the more liberal may jump on a Revolutionary bandwagon, first you need to educate and inform the uneducated and ill-informed. And if a Revolution occurs without this happening, all it will do is drive a wedge between conservative-minded people and liberal-minded people.

    • @philophos

      I think that the emphasis of Russell's message is to unite for a revolution despite our basic differences... Getting down to the common ground of basic humanity and respect for one another as beings with basic human needs to survive. As he points out in the interview, whether or not someone accepts gay marriage or condones abortion will be totally irrelevant on a planet that is no longer inhabitable. We need to get very real, very fast about what's really important, and our individual identities and rights - though very important - do not take precedent over the basic survival of humankind and the planet. The message is REAL and urgent - we don't have time to waste making meager 'tidbits' of change at this time.

    Equal rights for everyone shouldn't be an issue, he is spot on there. Equal rights should just be there already, we shouldn't have to vote them in. We should be focusing on the system as a whole, but we are kept preoccupied quarreling over smaller things. As George Carlin said They don't want a nation of people capable of critical thinking, they want obedient workers.

  • @jonathanrice2085

    He just said "In this country, there is NO place to cast a vote to express everything you just express. BUT, there is a vote to something that will not make a difference to the world wide problem we're having." Which is, people work together. People run the world. People make choices. I so agree with Russell's response about why voting for the smaller issues is a waste of time. We ARE being placated, but even worse than that, I feel that these "crumbs" of democracy are also just used to pit us against one another so that we ignore the main issue. What scares me is how many people simply go along with it without question, and actually get angry when you try to point it out. My fear is that we live in a world that WANTS to be placated, and how bad does it really have to get before that changes?

Russell Brand, although he made his buck as a comedian, is becoming much more important then that via his social commentary. The open-mindedness that Russell Brand espouses will become more powerful as it is taken up by "common people" and we take control of the political-corporate system from the inside-out.

    Russell Brand has become one of the most important voices of our generation. I cannot commend him enough for his efforts he's taking to ensure that our society is informed but furthermore engaged. His attempts at tackling the root issues of our elitist society, are to be respected and admired immensely. Keep it going Russell! Love the #trews btw!

    He does a very good job of highlighting problems and issues, although slacks on giving any type of realistic solution. Its far to complex to do so.

      The part where he says, on a local level we should organize collectively, protest, disobey and communicate globally, may be a good start. But ultimately it's not all down to Russell to devise a global Utopian system it's down to the people.

      Right on. It's up to the global mass of working class people to unite. People are finally becoming more class-conscious, after experiencing that the class war is on and that neither party is going to fight back for us. We've got to stand up, get organized, and fight back for real democracy ourselves, in the workplace and from the neighborhood level all the way up to the global level.

      Disobedience and protest are key. Politicians won't just hand your life back to you, you have o go and fucking take it.

    People get angry because they claim that capitalism is what got him to where he is even though he opposes it so much. What they don't understand is that if he didn't do what he needed to do to get to where he is, he wouldn't have the platform to speak his mind and change anything whatsoever. Not to mention, he didn't get rich by being some corrupt corporate puppet, or born into money. He's an entertainer: a movie star, comedian, and activist. He got to where he is because people liked what he had to offer. On the other hand, the corporations can get away with fucking us because they control what we CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT. See the distinction? Most people don't.

    • @jbknudtson
      @jbknudtson 9 років тому

      Democracy is boooring and incremental, and steady. Government is not the answer to all our problems, he is demanding a disruption of the process. My people, small business, the engine of the world economy, and the source of most innovation, does not want a revolution but only the less regulation, less tax, less social engineering either by the right or left. We don't need movie stars or government help as much as we need to be left to do our work unmolested by insaitable taxes, or social engineering.

    • @whpromo
      @whpromo 9 років тому

      You make a good point. Furthermore, I believe it works out to the same idea in practice. The power that he is railing against are the power institutions that promote those regulations, taxes and social engineering. Whether you like his pontification from his "privileged" position or not, his call to peaceful, non-violent protest falls well within the boundaries of democratic reaction to inequities that presently persist. The only thing I would take issue with your comment is that celebrity that expresses a social conscience is in a unique position to help give voice to social and economic issues in a way that most of the population has no access. Quite frankly, democracy works best when it is shaken up a bit and status quo is challenged.

    It's good to see that Russell Brand is becoming more popular for his political opinions rather than just actor/comedian. Hopefully this will lead to more and more people questioning their governments and lead to a change. However, it does kind of annoy me that people are saying things like "He is the modern day Jesus" or anything similar which is basically implying he is like Jesus. There isn't really any need to bring religion into this, why can't he just be like a revolutionary?
