Russell Brand in conversation with Guardian columnist Owen Jones.
    Subscribe here ► bit.ly/subgdnmembers
From at the Emmanuel Centre in London, in partnership with Picturehouse Cinemas, Russell Brand’s Guardian Live event was broadcast live to over 200 cinemas.
In his new book Revolution, Brand argues that the system isn’t working, that our governments are corrupt and the opposing parties are all pointlessly similar. Is there another way or is this just ‘the way things are’?
At this exclusive Guardian Live event, Brand will explain why he thinks revolution isn’t just possible, but inevitable.

Well what else do we have to add. Russell Brand have all the answers. He had his personal hell and found his salvation.
Perhaps we JUST HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION to everyday life and give room to our own voices. I did try to register a name for my fruit juice that I was making and AMAZON forbid me to use it. So it is not migrants but the large corporations that are the bad guys. The migrants work all ours for a pittance. We make the large companies by acquiring their wares, perhaps it is time to STOP buying their goods and bring them down a peg or two. The SOLUTION is in our finger tips. REDUCE CONSUMPTION. recycle upcycle=improve do it yourself, from your own cooking to your own gardening, reduce pesticides.....think.....then take small actions. DO NOT POSTPONE IT.

@REZOWNO I see Russell Brand as a "transition phase" character. He acknowledges his own weaknesses and understands that he doesn't have the answers. That doesn't make him any less important.
What makes the difference is the way he forwards his message, not only pointing out everything that's wrong with the world (we've seen way too much of that) but also invoking new thoughts and promoting new ideas.

I don't know why so many people attack brand on his personality, history or wealth. People like that are the problem, listen to what he's saying not who he is, did anyone give a fuck about the colour of Ghandi's sandals? being an entertainer / writer is probably one of the most genuine ways to make money as people choose to buy your book if they are interested in what you have to say, unlike many business / people that make money from abusing the poor like wonga or banks. Does the amount of money I have in the bank make my point any more or less valid?

Thanks for a brilliant speech I'm working toward doing something like you Russell, you're awe inspiring, I've always been a bit of a rebel inside but disability has held me back. I've done small gigs I've written serious poetry and I've written humourous poetry. but the serious stuff is more important to me I would like the people at the top to read my prose and feel miserable and cry because at least then it would show that they are tuning in to us and seeing things from our side.

Well. I observe Brands behaviour for quite a time. I lived with person with such charisma. They act so similar. I decided to study personal disorders after the hell he put me threw. Just listen to the man, but dont take him as guru or mesiah. Dont give him any power. I just say this. For these people loyality to opinions and promises means nothing. Now Brand parrot known facts for the applause. Change those believes or make changes in those or other ones means find excuses. And they find them every time. Yeap, I am quite sure he is the man with the disorder. Now I agree with him. Sure. But again - this fight is more for the attencion, then real changes. Because he doesnt have knowledge for those. He is comedian at the end.

    • @TiaTurnbullnow
      @TiaTurnbullnow 9 років тому +1

Aubrey, I like your thoughtful reply. To observe(listen) but do not give power. When we begin to believe someone we tend to stop observing, stop being present in our minds and just trust whatever the leader or "messiah" says. We believe the person and fall asleep and stop working in the moment. We get lazy, stop asking if what is being shared in each moment rings true in my heart and experience. How can we use only what our own hearts resonate with? For instance, for me, one thing is that he does say to act locally, which to me is to un-concentrate power. He says he understands narcissists because he is one. At least he sees how he got to be one. Revolution feels slow and hopeless because we cannot see the transformation happening in the minds of other individuals. Everyone is looking for one big solution out of the mouth of someone else. I am one cell in an interconnected network. How can I use what I am in control of and what I can influence to shift the resources from being systematically sucked away from the presently perceived as voiceless? I can choose inside myself to value the life of a "poor" person as much as the one's with perceived power and so create a u-turn, a shift of direction in flow of wealth away from the where resources are being sucked away to and back into the lives of those who are doing the work that actually creates value in such a way that the rich could not get rich without them? Instead of acting as powerless slaves to a present system we choose to act as enfranchised( partners, not just voters) negotiators and co-creators creating the lives we want to live. We must trust and act on our own inner visions for fulfilling lives. Not a "fame lottery built on lack and competition and win/lose. Not addictive false values, not through materialism, products and owning things, but the fundamental values that advertisers tell us we'll get by buying the products, values like love, trust, contentment, confidence, feeling good based on true life qualities. There are no enemies, only people who choose to follow instead of observe and powerfully create our own visions in our own lives and communities. Using mass communication we no longer have to live in what was possible in the past. All potentials are possible. We are all narcissists, we are all addicts, we are all victims, we are all helpers, What if instead of living down to the lowest common denominator, giving in to hopelessness, grabbing all we can for ourselves because the economists have handed us a story that the planet is running out of scarce resources, we choose to be creators and coaches that step up to the challenges of creating a more just planet? The revolution is happening in the shift in the paradigms and labels we are changing and living into. No one is more responsible or powerful than another. Indeed we are doing it now by participating in this discussion, we care, we are all catalysts for the change we are creating together.

Significant numbers of people in the UK and Europe seem to be embracing populist ideology right now, which suggests more of us are succumbing to fear and anger, and willingly allowing ourselves to become divided. It really doesn't matter that you feel you're enlightened, those things are still happening, and your and my world is unlikely to be the better for it if it continues apace.. You have this forum and you've chosen to use it to question the validity of RB's message. On balance I'd say he's using his chosen platforms more effectively.

Gina McGill Brand hasn't said one original thing that the world hasn't heard a million times already, including near-identical spiel from countless other celebs.
But you students like to listen to him because he's famous, which in itself is proof of how gullible and susceptible you are to populism, whether left or right.
And I feel sorry for you if you think he is using this 'forum' to improve the world, because all he's using this 'forum' or 'platform' (i.e. young people and students who are stunned by his celebrity) for is to provide space for his enormous ego.

Handsome_Hero It’s hard to gauge what your reasons for saying all those things are...so I won’t; there seems to be an enormous positivity deficit at large currently. This includes an inability to accept that some people really mean what they say, as well as an insistence that there are no answers, and we’re finished...make the best of a hideous world, etc. Even if Brand doesn’t mean what he says, and in spite of the same ideas having been said many times before - as you helpfully point out - it all needs to be heard by a young generation who have not heard it, and who will have the vigour that jaded, hopelessness junkies do not possess, and who may take things to where they so desperately need to go. For love will still be lord of all.

Marcus Clements Unless the youth learn it themselves through self-relfection and self-education, it will never mean anything to them. But it WILL generate publicity and money for Russell Brand and the media outlets that host him, while simultaneously changing nothing in the world for the better.

Marcus Clements Well I think it's the usual thing with RB - he's not an Oxbridge Alumni, he's a jumped up geezer from Essex who's lived a wild life, read a few books, has far too much to say for himself and is too damned eloquent for his own good. It brings the very worst out of some folks who would prefer their political heroes to be a good bit less flamboyant and hairy, and a lot more like the standard issue risk averse talking head that infests every media outlet and has the correct credentials. It's playing the man rather than the ball, and it's really fucking boring.
