  • Why do students find physics so challenging? This question explores the deep connection between mathematics and physics. From Newtonian mechanics to thermodynamics and Maxwell's equations, mathematics is essential for understanding physical phenomena. This talk delves into how mathematical principles aid in grasping complex physics concepts, highlighting the synergy between these two fields. Mieke De Cock discusses the importance of integrating mathematical education into physics to support students' comprehension and success.

Ich finde es total super, als interessierter Laie mitzubekommen, wie die Probleme von Physikstudierenden mit Mathematik in der Physik sind und wie ihnen geholfen werden kann. Vielen Dank für diese Einblicke :)

The talk described in an interesting way a problem that students really encountered. Most often maths and physics courses are led parallel in the same semester. In my opinion physics should be taught after maths is completed, so in the next semester. And this intensive maths course should be special: an exclusive content needed later. The course title could be "Abstract Beauty of Mathematical Functions" (with the first lecture entitled "You will thank in the next semesters"😀). The course content: multivariable functions, their derivatives, integrals, differential operators such as gradient, laplacian, curl etc., also introduction to matrices and tensors, three-dimensional representations, various graphic illustrations of operations (to imagine the result). And, maybe trivial, the logarithms revision (to understand logarithmic scales, which are rather magic to students). After that more than half problems in teaching physics are gone. A teacher can focus on physics only. Thank you for sharing the video.
