I think the GX Overtrail is a no-brainer. For $70k you can get the Overtrail with almost all of the offroad goodies for $10k less than the Ineos or $20k less than a smiliarly equipped Defender 110. For a luxury vehicle, its really a great value proposition.
yes one can delete the moon roof in GX 550 overtrail price is $68150 if one can buy it for that price lot better buy than the 3 row luxury Family School bus over priced sequoia trd pro
The Ineos Grenadier has loads of character but I can’t get over the poor slow steering and vehicle drift - especially if used as a daily driver. I wanted to like the Grenadier but this new GX ticks the boxes for the casual off-roader while including many luxury comforts most expect these days - for the same or less money than the Grenadier. I’m going to be one of those in line for this new GX.
@@youtubecarspottersguide1 Lexus isn't building any GX550s with the sunroof delete option and all of their builds for this year are loaded with options, so it won't be possible to find an Overtrail below $70k. Even the base Premium is being optioned up to $67k.
Always love that Roman is frustrated by everything no matter what! He gets frustrated that the Overtrail model doesn't have a 3rd row, but he's also frustrated at the amount of cargo space the 3rd row takes away...the only time I ever see Roman NOT frustrated is when he's wearing his rose colored glasses talking about how amazing Land Rover and Jaguar are. The guy is an absolute entrepreneur and he took something he loves (cars) and built a huge thing out of it (far more than most of us have ever or will ever do). Yeah, he definitely loves weird cars, but that's ok. It's great that he has the right people around him who are experts, and, as @nkoeppen and @americandude3825 point out, he makes for a great "everyman" and "antagonist".

With the new gx, tx, Land Cruiser, Tacoma, Camry, and upcoming 4runner, Toyota/lexus will be having record years at least for the next few years. No other brand even comes close right now
Don't think so. All are more expensive than the market can bear. The base taco, the base Highlander, the base Prius and the base ice RX4 are what's going to sell well. The automotive marketing world has blinders on. Ordinary US folks won't make $1000 per mo. car payments when lesser $500 alternatives are available.
You guys need to do a Moab face off with the GX550 Overtrail, Grenadier, classic Defender, 80 series, and a modern Defender. Maybe toss in the new LC250 for extra fun.
I'm really looking forward to the massaging seats as I plan to buy this vehicle for my long trips around the country. Can you tell me why you dislike the massaging seats in this GX Tommy?
Does anyone else listen to these podcasts / videos as a drinking game? Take a drink after each time Tommy says “Dad”. A great time is had by all! Keep up the great work!
I understand Roman's comment about "too well made that its boring". I have a 08 FJ Cruiser and an 03 Hummer H1. Both are special vehicles. Only one has a real emotional connection and its by far the one that takes of all of my time working on. While the Hummer's name is "Clifford" the FJ's name is "Boring Bob".
I find repairs to be much more expensive and time consuming than I like. So I'll take reliable any day of the week. And after breaking down once in the dead middle of winter, I find reliability doubly important in the Winter. And a Kentucky winter ain't really that bad comparatively speaking. But still it was a cold day.
The restraint Tommy was showing when Roman was referring to the back massager as a "centipede" was hilarious 😂 It's OK Tommy. Sometimes you just gotta pick your battles 😂 even when Dad isn't right, it's OK. This literally would've been my dream job. Reviewing cars and trucks with my Dad. We were always going through dealer lots to see the newest model that just came out. But when I was growing up, who would've thought making a living on UA-cam would be a thing. Not to mention my Dad was hopelessly lost when it came to technology. He had a smart phone for about a week and then went back to a flipper if that says anything 😂 Great job guys, keep it up.
My two cents, every time Roman says this car is just two expensive he is identifying that it exceeds his budget to purchase (me too!). As a mid 50’s guy that would consider the purchase of the 60-70k version of this, I have zero interest in a third row seat. I don’t need a team bus. I want a capable vehicle that can tow from time to time, go off-road at a minimum of Subaru capabilities (ironic that 85% of the off road vehicles today don’t match it for ground clearance) and offer comfort in my daily commute. Advanced cruise control, power to drive mountain passes without wringing its neck, and stylish looks. At an appropriate trim level this checks those boxes for me.
This was a fantastic show. Probably one of the top ones you guys have put together. Really enjoyed the other segment with the team from Hot pursuit Roman you knocked it out of the park. Hopefully we'll see more. Collabs with that team. They were fantastic. As usual, look forward to these talk sessions.
The Defender 110 can be obtained with three rows. Regarding competitors the majority of Lexus GX buyers are not cross shopping the GX with every three row SUV in the same price range so just listing all of those misses the mark. The majority of Lexus buyers are conservative when it comes to vehicles. They want luxury but they value reliability, and also cost of ownership when it comes to maintenance. The majority are not cross shopping the GX with Rivian, Ineos, Wagoneer, etc.
I've always been aware of the GX, and I've heard people talk about how good the previous gens are, but I've never even considered buying one because of the goofy front end. This new one has to be one of the most unexpected (in a good way) updates to any vehicle I've seen in a long time. It's a massive improvement over the previous generation on looks alone.
@@jimjones-pz1tt yeah but sometimes can work something out- someone buying a “base”/premium model may want the premium+ wheels on there’s who knows most cars I’d go aftermarket but this thing is too new & I don’t think it’d look right
Nice looking GX. Although capable of off-road, I think this Luxury trim is 99.99% of the time will be in the city/on-road. I love the look of those machined face wheels.
All of the people whining about lack of 3rd row on Overtrail (including Roman) are just reviewers or people who don't use them as intended. Going offroading on camera for YT vs going camping for at least a couple of days with family/friends and needing to be self-sufficient are very different, and the latter is way more common and what paying customers actually need. Almost everyone who offroads the GX regularly removes the 3rd row or keeps them folded down 100% of the time. You need that space for recovery gear, camping gear, food, etc. 9000 lbs of towing is good for a "midsize".
I’m a hot rod guy. I have a 69 Mach 1 and a blown 55 Chevy. I’ve owned 2 Lexus’s as daily drivers and I loved them above all other daily drivers because of how quiet they are. The exhaust to the road noise and ride comfort are the reasons I rank them above any other luxury daily drivers I’ve owned. I have regretted all other purchases for a daily drivers since my first sc400 back in the mid 90s. My LS460L was awesome and I put 120k miles on it with only oil changes and tire change maintenance. I don’t know why I have only owned 2 Lexus’s when I know no matter how hard I try to find a car that competes in a similar price range I am never satisfied. You will never regret owning a Lexus. Low maintenance and perfect ride quality
I don’t like that you can’t get the digital rearview mirror in the over trial. Seems like a stupid mistake to keep it out of critical trims instead of making it an option for all the trims .
@53:00 Say it out loud....battery tech sucks, and Toyota was always right about hybrids being the better approach if you really really really want economy that is PRACTICAL. EDIT.....@57:00 BOOM
Does hood shakes when driving fast or during high wind , like my 2014 does , I also wonder if you get stuck in snow or mud or somewhere else, and try to open door , do steps recline than too ? Easy to brake them
24:02 If that's the only function of the button, isn't it a little redundant? Can you not start in 2nd using manual mode? I think Toyota is botching this somewhat by bumping the LC price higher than they said they would. Some LC configurations basically overlap with this vehicle now..
no it's not redundant, it deletes 1st gear entirely in drive until you turn it off. As Tommy stated it's for snow on and off road and even sand mud off road... it will constantly put you in 2nd from a dead stop so you don't slip in the snow taking off from a light etc...
Really wonder how old Tommy is. Feel like now he looks different from he was in the video for the 1st time which was years ago. Did he join the team when he was an teenager?
def the hottest the new suv and its a real truck frame. the new explorer should do well w the 3.0 turbo so hoping to see you guys review it soon. but if i had 80k i would want this gx more so than the ineos g.
You scoff at how expensive it is. But compared to what??? A loaded Tahoe is 80k+ and is a piece of crap I wouldn’t want to own after it’s 10 years old. This Lexus/Toyota will keep working for 20+ years. You can give this to your kids. C’mon man. In 2024 it’s not expensive. It’s actually a deal.
14:50 That's just a dumb way to measure leg room in the second row. Maybe you should sit in the first row first and get a feel how much you can pull the seat forward? Off course you get poor leg room if the front seat is ALL THE WAY BACK.
I own a 2022 GX and I can honestly say that I don't care about exhaust note. I don't care about 3rd row seating either. I have a dog and go off-roading in the desert camping and overlanding so loading it up with gear is more important than passenger hauling capability. I would order it without the third row if I could.
Sure Tahoe, Suburban, Ford Expedition, are bigger and priced comparable but how’s their reliability? I mean I would give up a little space for reliability. Also the Palisade and Telluride would compare to this in size anyway, but does not offer much for off-road capabilities. And I love the body on frame system.
$80k? Good luck. Dealers are getting greedy again. I spoke with my local NorCal Lexus dealer and they have 2 GX550s coming next month, with a market adjustment (price hike)of $20k !
Relax you California Communist. Dealers can only get what someone is willing to pay. YOU WOULD DO THE SAME. If two buyers walk into your dealership and one offers MSRP and the other +$20K, don't try to make me believe you'd walk away from twenty grand. Don't be a limp-wristed liberal. Shop around and NEGOTIATE. (You're probably too scared to negotiate with evil car salesmen.)
Lexus got it right with the exterior styling. Looks purposeful and luxurious at the same time. Like Roman and Tommy said the interior could do with a "splash of color" along the dash etc. to make it more visually appealing, give it some contrast and brighten it up a bit. I know it's an off-road focused vehicle and the interior is supposed to be durable and easy to clean but it is very monochrome. The reality judging by some of the on-line forums is that many are on long waiting lists to purchase this as their luxury daily driver period. Looks like some are trying to convince themselves that this will work great as their next family hauler over their much bigger Tahoe's and Suburban's, Escalade's etc. because they are so excited about the exterior design and the perceived Lexus reliability. The reality is a vehicle like the TX makes much more sense for most families in this price bracket assuming you're not towing or doing serious off-roading. The TX has considerably more interior passenger room, cargo room, better on-road handling and fuel efficiency than the GX. The 550 is a looker for sure but it really is a mid-size SUV primarily designed for off-roading and towing with limited cargo space and it guzzles gas.
If you plan on keeping vehicles for a “long” time which many potential GX buyers will do (I’m talking 7-10 years) the body on frame more robustly built GX will probably fair better overall if you intend to throw a little of everything at it- DD duty, occasional tow/haul, little off-roading, + it’s nice to have a vehicle that’s more specifically purpose built that looks unique- the TX looks like everything else on the road….& I’m the exact customer that wants this- my wife & I wanna swap out her ‘19 MDX (2nd MDX for us) for a REAL SUV that feels more rugged & can tow our jet skis/utility trailer etc
@@MS-mr4zm I love the look of the new GX550 Overtrail and would like the extra towing and occasional off road and trail ability. I Had the '16 MDX and now the '19 Honda Passport and rented an X5 a couple of times on vacations. I'm ready to buy something new. What I can say about comparing the three I have the most experience with is that the MDX has the best city ride and great DD, good space, comfortable and tows my 21' boat and small utility trailer. The X5 best on the highway over 65 mph in Miami often 85 for long stretches, and not as good as the MDX in city driving but most comfortable with equal tow ability. My Passport, I wanted to try something different at the time, I don't need three rows. It has the most space, the ride is not as nice as the MDX in any type of driving, it tows as well, and it is a little better on a trail. I would say great all-around vehicle for about $15K less. I have been in the GX550 at the Chicago auto show and again I love the looks, but I wish it had more head and leg room mainly in the second row. I'm 6'4 and not comfortable back there at all. Also, a big negative is that the floor is not flat with the seats down like the others. And I know the ride will not be as good either, it will have body roll and be stiffer than the others. Before I order one, I'll have to drive it.
WE as consumers don't really care about being environmentally friendly. All vehicles affect the environment negatively. We want cars that are affordable, fuel efficient, reliable and convenient to use.
Plenty of consumers do though. Adding the we to pretend like you are speaking on behalf of all consumers is pretty silly and laughable. Not everyone wants exactly what you want.
@@theseb1979the most environmentally friendly vehicle is going to be the one that requires the fewest replacement parts, last a long time, and is fuel efficient for it’s purpose.
Great car… not sure i could live with 17mpg combined in today’s day and age.. X5’s get 24mpg in real world. New land cruiser going to be at 23 with the hybrid system…. That’s over 35% more efficient…. I think that i would live with the lower quality materials in cabin and decrease in tow capacity and decrease in load space to get 5mpg more…. But that’s me… it’s great that we will live in a world with options. Bronco, Defender, GX, Landcruiser, new 4Runner on the way and of course the wrangler and cherokee…. What a time to be an off road enthusiast…
Buy a used GX with an unbreakable V8 for $35,000 and you'll have at least $35,000 left over to buy 10,000 gallons of gasoline at $3.50 per gallon which will take you 170,000 miles at 17MPG. Plus, you don't pay or finance that $35,000 up front.

Obviously my 2003 6 cylinder Camry XLE isn’t off-road capable, but I do occasionally tow a 10’ x 5 1/2’ landscape trailer with high side rails. It has comfortable seating for 5, a large trunk, fold-down rear seats, and a smooth, quiet ride. So why exactly would I want a cramped 6 passenger vehicle with almost no trunk space and a semi-truck-like ride? Yeah, I know that it’s apples and oranges, but 80,000? 24:02 If that's the only function of the button, isn't it a little redundant? Can you not start in 2nd using manual mode? I think Toyota is botching this somewhat by bumping the LC price higher than they said they would. Some LC configurations basically overlap with this vehicle now..
no it's not redundant, it deletes 1st gear entirely in drive until you turn it off. As Tommy stated it's for snow on and off road and even sand mud off road... it will constantly put you in 2nd from a dead stop so you don't slip in the snow taking off from a light etc...
I can't wait for your overtrail version or premium plus review
I feel like Roman was super argumentative in this video he literally disagreed with 99% of everything
Big Dad Energy . Reminds me to phone my old man later.
Thank you, Lexus, for the lack of gloss black plastic on the interior!
The business-like neutral colors look great to me - thanks Lexus! Let me know when the more energy efficient hybrid is available at this price range
Really wonder how old Tommy is. Feel like now he looks different from he was in the video for the 1st time which was years ago. Did he join the team when he was an teenager?
mid-20's
I'm happy you have taken my advice Tommy. Keep at it and maybe I'll resubscribe.

Great review for 650 people who can really afford it, for rest of us (328,999,350) it's just a drooling pipe dream. Thanks 🤣👌🍻
Roman often makes comments that are questionable for someone self identifying as gear head…
Glad I'm not the only one who prefers manual folding seat. Way faster than electronic folding seats
Do the second row seats
slide forward or back?
Does this new GX still have the “body on frame”? Or did they go unibody. Love this new GX! Miss the rear opening door. Don’t like the hatchback.🙄
Tommy: "We have an enthusiast channel." Dream on.
I would like to know would can afford these to take them off road

Man I want the trim with smaller wheels.
I agree. Music culture has infiltrated the Lexus design studio. I'm not down with that yo.
def the hottest the new suv and its a real truck frame. the new explorer should do well w the 3.0 turbo so hoping to see you guys review it soon. but if i had 80k i would want this gx more so than the ineos g.
Roman is painful to listen to. Definitely a holiday father, where I’d only visit on thanksgiving and Christmas to maintain sanity.
Exactly! The QX80 is $80k+, the Defender S 130 is $74k+, what are people comparing the price to?
14:50
That's just a dumb way to measure leg room in the second row.
Get a roof rack and you get your storage back.
Does it have a boost gauge?
$80k? Good luck. Dealers are getting greedy again. I spoke with my local NorCal Lexus dealer and they have 2 GX550s coming next month, with a market adjustment (price hike)of $20k !
All dealers are not the same. My local Lexus dealer doesn’t do dealer markups
They wont get that markup sale. 20 grand for a mass produced and non special trim isn't that hot.
I do not see much if any crossover between this vehicle and the Grenadier.
Can you do the stroller Test ? Pls !!!
@MIZUNOMP60 Exactly. Well said.
The fact you can’t get the luxury with a rear locker or the overtrail with a 3rd row is a real head scratcher
WE as consumers don't really care about being environmentally friendly. All vehicles affect the environment negatively. We want cars that are affordable, fuel efficient, reliable and convenient to use.
I like utilitarian , cargo space , payload ,towing and no 3rd row in a utility
Plenty of consumers do though. Adding the we to pretend like you are speaking on behalf of all consumers is pretty silly and laughable. Not everyone wants exactly what you want.
I’m sure they’re are millions of people going into dealerships asking how the vehicle effects their carbon footprint 😂😂😂
@@theseb1979the most environmentally friendly vehicle is going to be the one that requires the fewest replacement parts, last a long time, and is fuel efficient for it’s purpose.
Who's we? You don't speak for me.
Also, I like better mpgs because I like going to the pump less and paying less when I do.
I see a winner 🏆 in there
Roman equates quality with boring. It's a Czech-commie thing: 1987 Skodas were not boring.
@@IndigoAwareness Check Lexus Certified Preowned. I found a 2021 GX with 40,000 miles for $39,995 asking price. Lexus CPO warranty gives you two years unlimited mileage on top of the remainder of the new car warranty. The COP warranty is excellent.

Hmm, seems like olde Roman might need his Rx adjusted a tetch....
Most people have zero need for a third row and most families don't have more than three kids. The delete of the third row from Overtrail is brilliant and a long time coming (other brands, take note).
Disagree. Many families want a third row option. Lexus made a mistake not offering the overtrail trim with a 3 row option. Give consumers the choice.
@@nateg2468 lot of us off roaders car campers ovelanders don't want ,need or will ever use the 3rd row ....but could be a limited run 3th row overtrail and limited run 2 row premium models , this high end trim has low payload and people are payload

@@youtubecarspottersguide1Let's off-road with dubs!
I paid $29K (albeit 20 years ago), all-in, tax included.
My “Android Auto” is an S7 phone with a bluetooth adapter in the 12vdc outlet, attached via a short USB cable (when charging) to the phone, which sits in a pivoting front vent holder.
The third row on any Toyota SUV is an enormous waste of space, unless you are a crazy person and have four kids, it’s always a no-brainer delete…honestly, I’d love a two row captains chair option.
hey now.. we exist 😆... we offroad our 4 kids and we need dat 3rd row 😆
