wonder if Jen couldn't do an extra stitch or two on the last lining piece at beginning and end to help avoid ripping when we turn the lining

Those reinforce stitches on either side of the lining opening are there. Is that what you are talking about?

I definitely would not recommend it but I am sure it can be done. Your vinyl would have to be REALLY pliable to fold over like that I still think you would have issues especially when it goes all the way around the bag. You could possible get away with it if you don't do the flipping style and just line your vinyl up but you have to be really good at lining that up straight I don't think trimming would look good. So my official answer is you can try it but I personally would not use vinyl on the front of this bag, back would be fine.
