  • Micro bubbles are your enemy! You've either had microbubbles, you have them now, or you will have them in the future. Microbubbles make your tank look DIRTY even when it's clean! I'll tell you how to find the source of them and more importantly how to get rid of them. This video is for you if you have an African cichlid tank, an American cichlid tank, or any tropical fish tank. If you want your aquarium to look great, you need to see this!
    Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African cichlids and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid fish specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids and other fish, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about fish and aquarium practices in general.

    Thank you for this video. That's exactly what I needed when I needed it. I was trying to find the bubble issue, which you answered for me, but unfortunately, now I'm also kicking myself on something else. I realized I cleaned a filter on another tank today that I shouldn't have. It wasn't that dirty & absolutely shouldn't have been done yet. It's a newer tank, so hopefully, I didn't take too many steps backwards on that one. Luckily, I only rinsed everything & put it right back in. I think I shall set up a schedule to prevent that in the future.
    When it comes to finding problems with your fish tank, UA-cam has been more reliable than Google.

      Oh you're so welcome! Glad it helped. If you just gently rinsed in tank water and it was at least a few months old, you're probably okay, but add some bacteria in a bottle and run some ammonia tests for a few days just to be safe. Thanks for the awesome comment!

    Nice video about the micro bubbles. I have sponge filters in all my tanks so I always see the bubbles but they go away fast. In my CA 100 gal tank I have an internal filter that pushes out air so there is always micro bubbles in the tank. Some of us can’t afford the big canister filters. 😢😂

    • @CichlidCharmer
      @CichlidCharmer  7 місяців тому +1

      It’s always good to have redundancy in vital components, but an fx6 is plenty and should produce a pretty strong current. Having said that, I do have an fx4 and a 407 on my 75g. I definitely don’t need a Wavemaker in there, but everyone is happy - not constantly fighting the current. If you have both, you could set up the fx6 and see if additional current would be a problem and then choose to add the sun sun or not.

    do you run an sponge filter in your tank or just the FXs? I have a sponge/air filter in mine but I hate it. I have always had it in case I need to quickly setup a hospital tank but I am considering removing it completely. I run a large Jabao wave maker so my thought is I don't need the surface agitation.

    • @CichlidCharmer
      @CichlidCharmer  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi Don! I used to do what you are doing. I also hate the aesthetic, so I do it a little differently now. If I need a hospital or quarantine tank, I place a sponge filter inside them. Then I just go rob a little bio media from an fx6, place it in a mesh bag and place it on the sponge filter. It’s been doing the trick for a few years now 💪

    Are some micro bubbles good for a saltwater tank or is it all about flow of the water ? I have a cascade where your outtake has four little holes and sits at the top rite corner , should that outtake piece from the cascade be completely submerged or have it sit above the water ? Sorry if dumb questions just wanna make sure i dont have any hiccups with my tank. Its a 55 gallon tank i have a bubbler but i wasnt sure if the bubbler is creating enough oxygen for the tank ? Or combination of bubblet and good flow. Or do you want that out take creating some micro bubbles for enough oxygen on the tank ? I’m wondering if you have an insight on this. I’m currently running an fx5 and fx6 on my 180. I replaced two media baskets in the fx5 with matrix. Since I replaced them it’s been louder (like you can hear the water moving through it) and producing micro bubbles. I’ve opened and closed it, checked the orings, and hoses and still micro bubbles. I just decided to throttle the output and the micro bubbles stopped. I’d like to run it fully open but for now this seems like a good temporary solution.
    Any ideas?
    Love the content!

    • @mackjames4999

      Just a little further context. Even throttled the fx5 is easily twice as loud as the fx6

    • @CichlidCharmer
      @CichlidCharmer  3 місяці тому

      Very interesting. I wonder if there is too much matrix in the basket? If you overstuff it can reduce the flow and that can cause micro bubbles. Perhaps experiment with different amounts of matrix. It should be after your sponges, but I’m sure you already know that. Just in case though.
      Thank you!

    But isn't that a good thing? The bubbles popping will bring oxygen in to tank right? I actually use a spray bar in my fx2 and the fish are very active now than when I only used v shaped filter output,

      On the surface of the water bubbles are good. These micro bubbles tend to stay in the water column and just blow around the tank and sometimes they settle on panels and decor. I’ve also heard they they can be bad for your fish, but that isn’t confirmed.

    It's the actual rubber from the FX inlet and outlet connectors inside the tank that is causing me issues.
    It's a new filter and because the rubber is of a good quality, it leaks like a white calcium powfer out that turns the rubber connectors from black to white. I scrub them with a toothbrush twice a week but the white powder stuff covers the water surface and I can never clear it all. it is pure clear water where the flow comes out but the rest of the water surface is covered in little white dots. I'm hoping that eventually the rubber calcium type stuff will expire and no more will seep out and then my water surface can be clear once again...Sorry for the essay!
