About:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
People get emotional about this song, but if you listen to the lyrics, it's basically the cats informing the humans "Get it now? We're your overlords."
I don't see a contradiction. XD
Worse things could happen.
That's the point though
İ heard somewhere that house cats wiew their owners like bigger and older cats, basically like their parents.
never laughed so hard at a cat joke!
"A cat is not a dog." Well, that's an A-grade lyric right there.
It's a poem by TS Eliot. Hence the oddness of the words.
dont laugh: some people keep cats and/or dogs and still don't see the difference.
Yeah. Dogs are way better
@@mitchlee2363 no musical for dogs. So there.
The original West End production had more lyrics that explained it more.
Musical ends..... You look over at your cat... and it just blinks and looks away.
LOL
XD LOL
Remember, Cats "resent familiarity." ;)
@@indigothecat But they do like treats.
The slow blink is how they tell you they love you!
“Cats aren’t dogs” is like a ‘well duh’ moment but no joke, people who don’t like cats mostly have problems with them not being dog-like. Actually, most people automatically compare ANY pet with dogs and typical dog behaviors. So I think a musical about cats really does deserve a whole number about how humans need to stop comparing them to dogs.
We know
Can we just appreciate the close-ups of the cats?? their makeup is on point.
This was my biggest prejudice before I've been the first time to the musical: "They want to meme cats? Impossible. Must be awkward as f**k." OMFG was I wrong. IMO Cats is the greatest musical ever and it's a shame that there are almost no constant performances left.
I love that the closing song for this musical is basically them just saying "Please give us some food"
please i want expensive stuff to eat
@@knollie20wayheal80 “also make sure it’s up to my standards thanks”
It's excellent because if acts gained the ability to sing about what they want this is exactly what they'd do
*Me getting pizza after seeing cats*
Bustoppher Jones: "Actually old Deuty, im good!"
Can we all take a second to appreciate that high note at the end from Old Deuteronomy? 👏
Barton was better.
!!!! I've re-watched this 1998 performance a thousand times over and I somehow must have turned it off after the Journey to the Heavyside Layer (?!?!?!?!?!). I f***ing floated off the Earth hearing it for the first time just now 😭
@@yourgirlrae that must have been an awesome discovery!
That high B is incredible!
Surprisingly on the sheet music, that note was a B sharp an octave lower than that one..
I don't understand how people can say "this song can be skipped/is not interesting".
It's probably my favourite song of them all. I find it perfectly fits the general absurdity. In the end, cats are still a bit egocentric, even after all that happened.
Also how dare you skip this absolutely amazing vocal performance by Ken Page.
It took me years to really appreciate the majesty of this song. It's truly a fitting finale for a superb musical.
It probably because of how slow the singing is not a lot of people have the patience for songs like this
Ken Page's singing as Deuteronomy is so utterly uplifting and the song is this perfect blend of sincerity and irony.
THANK YOU!!! I try to tell people that this is the version of Cats to watch. The movie did nothing. Flat and dull. But this? How can anyone go up against Ken Page as Old Deut?
@@dragontoothflamehair2581 It's a completely iconic performance.
No doubt best cast of CATS you will ever see and hear in your entire existence
Agreed
Absolutely
I did like that they brought Ken Page in since he was in the Broadway version of this Musical. This cast is great since they were from all over and this was more like a film then a production on Broadway so they had a little bit more time to show more emotions then normal.
@@sassbrat every cast member in this was in a previous production of Cats
@@sgillman16 OKAY, I knew that the girl playing the pure white kitten was in a version of Cats and that Ken page was as well but didn't know that everyone else was as well. thanks.
I feel like there's so much depth in Jemimas character. She seems so mature and confident in this ending scene, much more than in the opening scenes were she was unsure and timid.
Kk
The Jellicle Ball made her grow up a bit more.
älskling yea shes the youngest and in the opening they are even younger
I feel like that's true of almost all the characters really. At first glance they all seem to have their niche- Skimbleshanks is the strict cat that takes care of a train, Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer are the clumsy but mischievous cats, Rum Tum Tugger is the smug disobedient rockstar cat, etc., but then when you watch them interact, Skimble jokes around, Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer have serious moments, Rum Tum Tugger is respectful to Deuteronomy. Jemima never really gets introduced in a song, but yeah, if you watch her in the background scenes you can see a lot of personality and depth.
Or maybe I'm just going mad. I have watched Cats a good 30ish times since mid-May, not to mention watching these individual videos countless times on top of that....
This is the most underrated song in cats. The actual meaning of the song is so absurd yet sung so seriously and I love it
Well well well I didn't expect to see you here
@@paperfoxka lol same
it's saying 'we are your rulers now, give us fancy stuff to eat, we are not dogs'
Webber looked at the silly poem (and I mean silly in a good way) and made it one of the most vocally demanding songs in the musical.
Hey, a cat is NOT a dog!
Munkustrap at Old Deuteronomy's right and Rum Tum Tugger at his left. #theroyals
Micay Well spotted...
@@ahmedsheikh5295 believe it or not Old Deuteronomy does the voice of Dr Facilier in The Princess and The Frog

Shadow84 Hellsing I think your thinking of Oogie boogie from Nightmare before Christmas
I think I read that Munkustrap and RTT are his sons or something.
@@shadow84hellsing82 wrong. That is Ken Page, who is also known as Oogie Boogie from NBC. Or just a truly legendary actor.
Half of the magic of "CATS" is in the costumes, makeup and the dancing! The new movie will not even come close.
My favorite CAT is Cassandra, the Siamese!
Also - how on earth is Judi Dench supposed to sing that Deuteronomy-Part???
1pilot2000 yup 👍 I was proud of that even though I love cats this one is better
Cassandra doesn’t have the right coloring to be a Siamese, I think she’s a sphinx cat
I read that Cassandra is an Abyssinian
I thought Cassandra was a sphynx?
No offense to Judi Dench, but there's only one Old Deuteronomy for me. Having someone other than Ken Page playing this part is like someone else other than James Earl Jones voicing Mufasa or Darth Vader.
Kevin Riley I met Ken Page
She should have played Grizzabella honestly. It was the part she was originally cast in when the show premiered back in 1981 but then she broke her foot and had to drop out.
@@dillonohlemiller9027 Whoaaaaaa!!! You're so luckyyyyyyy!!!
Yeah honestly. Like no offense to judi but when she was cast i was like... Is she going to sing this?
She should've been Grizabella. And James Earl Jones would've probably been a better pick for Old Deuteronomy for the new movie.
A grand finale to a grand musical. There is no other musical like CATS.
What about DOGS xD
My favorite musical! I've seen it three times!
The touches of Gilbert and Sullivan in this song work brilliantly.
Was blessed to see this play 6x on Broadway until it ended. Was actually honored to see it's last showing :)
Took me awhile to figure out where Munkustrap was hiding in this song. I didn't realize he was to Deuteronomy's right, but it makes sense, since he seems to be Deuteronomy's right-paw cat.
+Leo Archon, I never noticed that he was back there before. Good eye! It's hard not to notice Rum Tum Tugger back there, lol.
+Leo Archon munkustrap is deuteronomy's son
Patrick McDonald I had always suspected that. I knew Munk and Tugger were brothers but yeah, I always assumed if they weren't his sons that they were at least the next in line.
macavity is also kin
All of the cats are Deuteronomy's children. Munkustrap and Tugger are his oldest sons. It's in his song I believe, or that's what I got from it anyway. :)
I was in the grocery checkout behind Ken Page at Straub’s tonight and I grinned to myself but I politely ignored him but it was fun to see him because I’ve been watching all these old Cats clips and the manager was like “have a good night sir”
I would probably have started humming Old Deuteronomy quietly to subtly let him know I recognized him and am a fan. 😁❤️
Everyone always talks about how the ending is skippable
And im just lile nono, nononononono
crank the volume on the ending verses when the chorus is belting it out in addition to Ken Page flexing his tenor voice
and tell me that its not beautiful.
Yeah true. As a kid i didnt like this song bc I didn't understand a word he was saying. But now as an adult im like hoooly shit this is my favourite song now??
If you "own" or "have owned" a cat you understand this song...
I can’t imagine skipping this song. It’s such an ending to a great musical. As a kid watching this the first time, I wanted to be there so much. Just sucks you in. Beautiful.
Some people are just dumb. If they don't like this chorus they can't be helped
He's definitely not a tenor. A baritone with a massive range, i'd say.
I just want to hug Old Deuteronomy, I want to hug him so bad. 😭❤️
yes! he's the most huggable of all the cats
His bland physionomy is so floofy and huggable.
What a fantastic voice! When you first start watching it you're like wtf, is this a joke or what. Then the singing and talented performances suck you in and you'll be crying by the end. Jemima is sublime.
I love watching how Jemima grows throughout the musical.
To me low male range singing is awful and warbbly, especially when trying to sing vibrato.
Can't believe how lucky my mom and grandmother were to get to see Ken Page perform this live on Broadway back in the 80s. They were even able to get his autograph! He was sitting on stage during the intermission happily signing people's programmes 😊
My dad saw cats before i was even born
Do you know he played Oogie Boogie in Nightmare Before Christmas?
And King Gator in All Dogs Go To Heaven!
Oh my goooooosh...
oh wow
Haha, no, but I do now!
@@epicrapfan73 Let's make music together, baby!
Ken Page was such a natural for the part of Old Deuteronomy.
And he’s the one and only to play this part.
Kenneth Page plays his role as Old Deuteronomy with ABSOLUTELY WITH PERFECTION and to this VERY DAY he happens to be a VERY FAMOUS ACTOR in BOTH in T.V., Movies and Broadway Musicals TOO ❤️❤️❤️❤️!!!!
All the songs are kids poems by TS Elliott that's why some are quite simple lyric wise. It's the way they are set to music and sung is why cats is so good. Only memory is an original song by ALW
I was watching the whole musical and when I clicked on this song all 3 of my cats decided to join me.
8SemiCat8 they KNOW!
But are they Jellical cats?
Hands down the best Old Deuteronomy i have heard!
Ken Page. He played Old Deuteronomy in the original Broadway production/soundtrack too. Nobody can touch Ken!!!
A true legend.
Ken Paige is the best..he cant be touched..
What a voice he has!
I played the role of Old Deutoronomy in our high school play. It turns well, I guess but it takes a lot of time to adjust my voice on what the role required.
The movie is not TOUCHING this masterpiece! It’s not even that “tHaT mOvIe wAs tErRiBlE” I’m not even getting into all that. I’m here to name FACTS! And the FACTS are this is the BEST THING to happen to CATS! since laser pointers and balls of yarn🙃 🐈 #LongLiveCatsTheMusical
After watching this full musical seven days in a row I officially admit I am now a huge fan of CATS: The Musical. 😸
Welcome to the family.
Jemima is just the most beautiful little creature I think Ive ever seen.
haribo mittens funny thing, I used to have a male cat that looked just like her. I only know him from pictures, because he died when I was 6 months old, and his name was “Cat”. We also had a brown tabby male named “Rumpelteaser”.
@@mattkulach1024 awwww...
Zi Xiong Rumpelteaser was also a bit bigger than Bustopher Jones, weighing in at around 32 pounds. His vet said he was healthy, since he could pick him up and feel all of his ribs. He was of unknown breed, being a rescue cat, but we used to joke that he was half house cat and half Siberian tiger, because he was so big and his stripes were so vivid
Alisa Kulach haha!! I also have a rescue cat. I found her at the corner of the street on my way to badminton class, and she had her right arm cut off. You can see all of that bones and stuff... took her to the vet, and he said she was only a month old and has to do an amputation, but she might not make it, but she did. I took care of her for two years before moving to another country and right now I have my grandma taking care of her. She is a little spoiled but she is so cute :D
Alisa Kulach also she LOVES to attack me playfully and she is very independent. Probably the most beautiful and elegant looking cat I have ever seen, but her personality is super fierce and kind of stubborn, too.
By cat walked by while I was watching this and I just went:
“Brat, come here.”
And he walked away with that look like I disgraced his ancestors.
Apologize. Now.
That's what you get when you don't address them properly :(
It’s what you get when you break the rules. Rule number one. Don’t speak till you are spoken too. I don’t make the rules.
You forgot to start with "oh . .cat!"

Finally I get a version of Addressing of cats that didn’t make me want to slowly lower my head on a spike as the pain seeps in as I watch dame Judi tell me CATS are are overlords.
Ken Page is a national treasure.
And a extraordinary legend.
I just love how muskup and rum tum tugger are at old Deuteronomy side
Why is this one of the best finales written for a musical ever?
The high B Old Doot hits at the end is just incredible.
I'm hoping and praying that the music to the 1997 film version of Cats is one day brought to places like Itunes and Spotify.
There is the full musical version on Spotify.
@@helpstopanimalabuse8153 Correct, but not this cast. For some reason this is the only one of the Andrew Lloyd Webber films that didn't get a soundtrack release.

After that horrendous piss fest of a movie, vulgar and crude and so clearly americanized, I needed to re-watch this release to cleanse myself and my definition of CATS. And I cried. God, I cried. This is so invincibly beautiful.
Ken Page: gorgeous voice, gorgeous Old Deuteronomy
Almost fall in tears. I did perform with this musical on my learning theathre. Too emotional for me.
A lot of people make fun of it but most of us are wise enough to see the beauty of it. ;) It is such fun and energetic show, I fell in love with it the first and only time I saw it in the theater. I always get very emotional at the end with the heavyside lair and addressing of cats. It makes me think of my beloved Felix, a tuxedo cat who came into my life when I was 8yrs old and passed away when I was 25. He was 18 at his passing, and now 16yrs later I have two more wonderful cat family members whom I love just as dearly. The addressing of cats always mists my eyes and makes me feel so thankful that I have had cats in my life since almost the beginning.
Memories
SAME
My first thought when hearing "a cat is not a dog" was um, duh. But if you think about it, a cat doesn't react like or enjoy many things a dog does, so if a cat was trying to talk to me, that's probably the first thing they'd say, "I'm not a dog!"
Imagine the cast's relief when they could finally get out from under the hot lights and rip off those headdresses and wash off all that makeup.
The Ad-dressing of the Cats in the film is beyond awful. From out of nowhere after a strange Judi Dench whispering rendition they add the same ending of the song as here with full choir yet in the film you're wondering where the majestic voices are coming from since 5 mins before no one was singing anything.
They never told her how to play Old D at all
His voice is everything
Cats 2019: I have an idea. Let's replace the best and most powerful singer in the entire musical with a little old lady who can barely project.
I don't really know what he's talking about but I like this song
He's saying to treat your cat like royalty

Fun fact Cats: the musical was based off of T.S Eliot's Old Possum's book of Practical Cats and the songs are pretty much word for word with slight variations. And the fact that Grizabella the glamour cat was not in the book.
Elisabeth Lyonheart Yes I have the book and when listening to these songs I have the book in my lap and I read along - I’m such a geek lol
Grizabella was actually a cut poem that Eliot’s family found after the book was published. It was cut for being too dreary.
@@mondenkindqueen so...so you’re saying that this is the live action of those poems and our dear Grizzy’s poem was actually thrown out?? What an incredible explanation...
One of the most beautiful epilogues ever for a musical.
Ken Page is just such an amazing singer. He really deserves more love for his amazing range.
1:10 I love this shot of Asparagus, he looks absolutely adorable here!
Him and Grisabella (and even Macavity) and other cats all done a good job on making humans believe that all this "jellicle ball" stuff was not joke. But it is time to wake up. Its like they say to the audience: We are sorry if we forced you to believe that Gus are really old one cat, and that Grisabella are really not welcome here, and that Macavity are really a monster. We don't want you to stay fooled for life, so here are they all, alive and lively.
This song makes me cry, seriously...
It's a beautiful song!

I feel the same way, I have been in love with this musical ever since I was five and it is also thanks to my grandma Cats forever!!
I love this song so much. My cat does as well. I would love to see this version of the musical brought back in an HD format.

CAT IS NOT DOG!!!!
Not a fan of Judi Dench as Ol Deuteronomy in the movie. Ken Page's big opera like voice is sorely missed in the closing number. At least the harmonies in the chorus sounded really nice
Originally Judi Dench was meant to play Grizabella. However she was injured during the rehearsals and Elaine Paige took her place. I think it was bad idea for her to play Old Deuteronomy as Old Deuteronomy is meant to be a male cat. She should have been cast as Grizabella.
You've heard of several kinds of cat
And my opinion now is that
You should need to interpreter to understand our character
You've learned enough to take the view
That cats are very much like you
You've seen us both at work and games
And learnt about our proper names
Our habits and our habitat
But how would you ad - dress a cat
So first, your memory I'll jog
And say: A cat is not a dog
So first, your memory I'll jog
And say: A cat is not a dog
With cats, some say, one rule is true
Don't speak 'till spoken to
Myself I do not hold with that
I say, you should ad - dress a cat
But always bear in mind that he resents familiarity
You bow, and taking off your hat, ad - dress him in this form "O Cat"!
Before a cat will condescend
To treat you as a trusted friend
Some little token of esteem is needed, like a dish of cream
And you might now and then supply
Some caviar or Strassburg pie
Some potted grouse or salmon paste
He's sure to have his personal taste
And so in time you reach your aim
And call him by his name
A cat's entitled to expect
These evidences of respect
So this is this and that is that
And there's how you ad - dress a cat
A cat's entitled to expect these evidences of respect
So this is this, and that is that
And there's how you ad - dress a cat
1:18
Cats - (singing) So first your memory, I'll jog. And say a cat is not a dog.
Can we all just appreciate the musical cats ends on Deut going: "Can I haz chezburger?"
4:35 that's a B4 (The same note as 24601 in Les Miserables)
That use to just make me lean back like “DAAAAAAAAMN!”

It's great because Ken Page was in the original 1982 Broadway cast
Ken Page did a BETTER Old D than Judi Dench
Ken Page, what a legend
I adore this song so much, but I can't believe in all the times I've listened that I missed the way Ken sang "caviar" - there's this wonderful rumbling growl beneath it that just lends so much to Old Deut's character.
Got to see Mr. Ken Burns perform in Lubbock Texas as Old Deuteronomy a year or so ago and it was a thrill of a lifetime! What a voice! What a true actor! I get chills just thinking about it!
Regina Crutcher Ken Page??
Was that Ken Burns in this video? If not who is it?
Ken Page is the actor and singer and he’s African American, Ken Burns is the PBS documentary film maker of The Civil War and he’s a white guy with a bowl haircut
Ken page is the absolute G.O.A.T
"Thank you for coming to this year's Jellicle Ball. We will close with the traditional singing of the Cat National Anthem."
A cat's entitled to expect these evidences of respect. So this is this and that is that and that's how you address a cat.
uh oh guys! i think i’m now a cats fan!
I would love to know how they expect to pull off a new big budget film version of CATS with a star studded cast of people who are not professional dancers, they also aren't known to have any dancing skills when you see them in in music videos etc! Jennifer Hudson is Grizabella , Idris Elba is Macavity. Jason Derulo will be the RumTumTugger. Judi Dench is Old Deutoronomy. Ian McKellen is Gus. Taylor Swift & James Corden also star. For the ones playing a character that doesn't dance, there are a few cast who also aren't known for their singing skills either. Don't fix what ain't broke!
Lmao now you know
Not seeing it. Like so many remakes, it is unnecessary. And given the current vibe of this era, itll be all "woke". No thanks.
I have to admit the guy that played Skimbleshanks killed it. I'm not familiar with Steven McRae who is with the Royal Ballet but he was amazing.
Outside of the script making Bustopher the butt of jokes, I actually think James Cordon did a good job
Turns out that the actor playing old Deuteronomy is ken Paige who played the Oogie Boogie man from the nightmare before Christmas.
