The profession of modern public health is attributed to the Industrial Revolution during the late health protection and hygiene eras. Squalid living and working conditions in industrialized cities of Europe, the United States, and other countries during the 19th-century led to infectious disease outbreaks, increased risk of non-infectious conditions, and injuries.
