OutKast I think could do it. Kendrick and Drake do feel right Kendrick has a phenomenal theatrical element to it where it almost feels like a broadway play. Considering by market it’s the largest it has the largest market especially in the states. Curious if they could split stadiums and arenas on major stops example LA for Kendrick. Houston for Travis
Hey, Derrick - once again, great content as usual. This question was always a thought of mine, especially since as an artist I watch all of the artists who've filled out stadiums and their path to that rare air of success. I've asked this question to friends some years ago, especially Drake who seems to be not only at the pinnacle of the rap hegemony, but in pop music itself for the third decade.
I know not considered hip hop in the community but I think if the BTS rap line did solo stadium tours they would definitely sell out. One member actually did a tour recently, earning over $30 million with just 10 or so shows in the just the USA alone. The tickets were all sold out in presale before they even got the chance to release it to the general public. They have the body of work as well as the established fan base from their group activities. Also despite the fact that they're not radio friendly at all, especially in western countries like ours, somehow they managed to appeal to a wide demographic, not just the stereotypical young teenage girls. From multi generations grandparents, parents and children to women and the lgbqt+. As much as I love the hip hop genre, I find most hip hop acts really boring to watch and listen to live. Why would I pay that amount of money for something that sounds exactly the same if I listened to it at home, that's even if they turn up on time, not 2 hours later and are actually sober. Sonically, I want live instruments. Visually I want to see dancing either from the artist (I've got high hopes for EZ Mills and Lil Nas X) or backup dancers. I want the artist to interact/engage with the audience, be as much of an entertainer/performer as a rapper with dope beats and hard bars.
Bad Bunny is a rapper and he did an stadium tour last year. He promoted his Pop album (UVST) but he's still a rapper and rapped a lot of his rap songs in the shows
unfinished songs for that matter. if kanye just focused on his music and leave the fashion, antisemitism, running for president, and other crazy shit he has going on he’ll definitely can do stadium tours
I don’t think hip hop needs stadium tours, like you said a lot of hip hop is a lot more intimate than Ed Sheeran and t swift. Arenas should be the max a hip hop artist should strive for imo, Smaller venues are the sweet spot. Like when drake just did his b sides at the Apollo, that’s where his pen/him as an artist can truly be appreciated. And to add on to the age gap, yes hip hop is so young but there’s so many ppl trying to join it, and if so many ppl are trying to join then it’s going to be hard to build a huge fanbase especially cuz hip hop has been made to be more competitive than any other genre. Pop,rock, jazz etc. have infinite room for everyone, hip hop is the only genre where you have fight for room/fight to make a name for yourself and declare yourself one of if not the greatest. But I think that stigma is changing with the help of Tyler, navy blue, mike, Earl sweatshirt, and other smaller acts who don’t care to fight for the #1 spot and are proud of where they are in the moment and appreciate the fans they have already. So when they perform at small venues you can see that they care and respect the craft.
They could but they also are the exceptions. Why ? Simply because that’s not the business model for hip hop ; rappers make a large chunk of their money through endorsements or entrepreneurship - because for a while rap music wasn’t as popular or seen as friendly enough to be played in stadiums that bring entire families together. Pop music is by essence written and presented as something appealing to all generations and therefore more people are willing to pay and therefore stadiums can be filled out pretty quickly. That’s just my opinion ☺️
I have the same sentiment with some of the comments here. While hiphop is pop, it is at its peak in studio version. Its not fun live. I mean go to a Coldplay concert, their songs are better performed live in a stadium. Also their music just like others in the list transcends generations.
because a lot of the hip hop shows I've ever seen, sucks. Bone thugs, my #1 ultimate rap group, their show sucks. Its them and their entourage, just yelling words. It's not fun. Its great to see my idols so close, but a lot of rappers are so used to producers "fixing and mixing" everything, that live, they're actually terrible live.
This. A popular rapper being able to sell out MetLife for a single show in the largest population area of the country is a LOT different than traveling to 40 different cities and selling out their stadiums
Nah... as talked about in the video, his music audience isn't wide enough. The Ed Sheerans, Taylor Swifts, Harry Styles, Coldpays, Elton Johns etc. are making "family-friendly mom music". Nobody's selling a stadium TOUR just catering for 16-30 year olds of a more specific demo
@@nathanmorrison6002 Have you watched the video?? Drake's highest grossing tour to date was a *Collab (arena) tour with Future and gained 70m+ in revenue... @@nathanmorrison6002because his music isn’t enjoyed by a very large demographic like some of the other pop stars. Lol I feel like your logic is flawed but just to simplify it. Hip hop has several genres and doesn't transcend the language barriers as well as pop... the top 10 that you listed are either the most recent pop stars or Classic pop stars so you are right in that aspect.
