  • This video is captures the process of a Mechanical Engineering Senior Design project for students at the University of Central Florida. The project spanned between Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. The goal of this project was to use solar energy to provide fresh water to those in areas with limited access. The process involves evaporating salt water and condensing it as fresh water.
Team Members: Braulio Matias, Kelly Muller, Jonathan Sepulveda, Arianna Rodriquez, Jared Black, and Evan Gonzalez

i think the stair structure shoul be of black color .that way it will transform more light into heat. try it. good project.

Very innovative idea and it can resolve many societal problems. I would like to know more about the material that has been used in the project and the cost of the system. Thank you!✌

Truly an innovative way to use the step design with the two acrylic glass panels in this slope position. Good job to the whole team!
I do have a suggestion, that the two external reflectors can cause sunlight block (shadow) inside the solar still which will reduce the productivity during sunrise and sunset. I suggest to make the reflectors motorized, such that they can fold down when they are blocking the sun and return back when needed. Of course by adding motors and electronic circuits/controllers will increase the capital and operational costs, this is why it needs to be studied in order to check if it is economically justified. Also, motors and circuits require electricity, in which the system can still operate sustainably by adding a solar panel. But again, it will add more costs and needs an economic justification.

Thank you for the nice comment and advice. Solar tracking capabilities was something the team really wanted to incorporate initially, but the added costs and potential for the electrical components to break overtime was what kept us from this.

@@kellymuller9662 It would be highly appreciated if you can share any resources that helped you with the ANSYS FLUENT CFD simulation. I am trying to do it but I am stuck in some parts.

    Two questions.
Very good idea! My wife and I have sought the solution to this problem and want to build this solar collector.
Are the plans created for the construction of the solar still available to the public and if so, how might I aquire them?
Have you done any more work on this idea to improve the results, if so how can that be accessed?

I have watched this several times but I can’t find where it says how the salt water is added to the stair cases

I don't know how to explain my suggestion. If evaporative surfaces change to unique surface (not like staircase ) . The surface is prepared with dark sand like things ( to have micro cavities for good distribution of hard water.) For practically set on roofs . It make the living area cool.
Thank you all , young team , thinking about main problem of future.

You mean cavities on the basin surface so that it can hold more amount of water in the same area? I am unsure if allowing more amount of water without changing the surface exposure that it would increase productivity. Let me know if I got you correctly.
