Hi everyone! You might notice I've re-uploaded this video. This was to get the full citation of Andrew Simmons' essay into the video (mainly at the end) - it should have been there in the first version. I hope you enjoy watching it again if this is your second time!
Huge respect for you to going through the effort of re-editing, exporting and uploading this video again to add this in when commenters pointed out that Simmons’ work deserved more recognition in your video. Can tell this channel is gonna absolutely blow up
“Sadness is after all, never a neutral emptiness. It’s the negative of joy we’ve felt beforehand and that we will feel again.” I keep coming back to this video. So so so well made. A perfect bonus to the film and its music. Thank you.
I always like to say this and UP's soundtracks are probably the best soundtracks ever made to connect with emotionally, they are truly a top standard for other movies soundtrack arrangements
This is one of the few films I've ever seen to have made me cry, and I havent seen it in years. This analysis captured that old feeling and truly made me feel raw emotion . Incredible video. I need to watch inside out again now!
I've read the Simmons piece, and it is pretty technical and unapproachable by anyone but a graduate student. In contrast, your video is fascinating and more importantly, it gives a powerful taste for more. I'm not surprised that people here are saying they want to watch more of your videos. I don't think music tells the story, I see it as a powerful way of making a film more meaningful by suggesting emotions that the protagonists are undergoing or that an observer of the story might be feeling as they watch the events unfold. The musical themes bring the story to life by nudging us to imagine what it would be like to be the characters, and for the story to be unfolding in real life. Once we start to feel these emotions we are drawn deeper into the story, and are more committed to imagining it really taking place.
This video is awesome! I love your breakdown of themes and how they help develop the narrative. I think Inside Out is one of Pixar's best and Giacchino's music is one of my favourites of his Great channel!
Could very well be being a dad of four daughters, but Inside Out has always been at the top of my favorite Pixar movies and it is truly because of the emotional response. It was so cool to see how it was plotted out and how the score really represents a piece of the whole, but where the whole, when done well, is greater than the sum of it's parts.
In any movie, image and voice frame the setting and narrative. But music is the voice of emotion. Without it, we become lost in our own perceptions and preconceptions. The best movie sound tracks tell us how to feel.
This is, hands down, one of my favourite Disney-Pixar films. What you've done here is exceptional, and incredibly moving - just like the film. I've only came across your channel today, and after watching this and the video on Eglar's Enigma Variations, I've now subscribed!
I just found this channel, what an amazing video and analysis. Inside out is just fenomenal and you explained it so perfectly. You made it feel like in the movie, just impossible to not cry. Great job.
Absolutely fantastic, Barney! I am so interested in the concept of sadness and how the struggle/journey in life is what actually matters, not just the destination and it's so great to hear you talking about this and being able to relate it to this awesome film! Great essay!!!!
The balance of emotions in music (and film scores) make each end of the emotional spectrum more meaningful than what they would be on their own. This video just happens to explain that in an amazing way! :)
Wow, great video! The first video of yours I saw was the one about why choral music sounds good to us, about a month ago, and I've since watched a number of the other ones, too. I must say, I loved them all! They're super interesting and, of course, feature great music. Well done!
this video so perfectly describes what i love about this Soundtrack and soundtracks in general if they are so well thought out giacchino often does this with his soundtracks and i also recommend checking out his work for the show lost i fell in Love with Soundtracks when i realized that they can tell a story in their own way , especially when the themes get transformed - i think no one can do that better than giacchino thanks for this brilliant video! ❤
The main theme of this movie is one of those I can just conjure up out of memory and get it stuck in my head instantly, like those of some the most iconic film scores.
This video is exceptional! I do a film music unit with my 6th grade music class and you’ve just sold me on why we’ll finish our unit with watching Inside Out! I’ll be showing them your video as well. :)
I subscribed the moment I found your video about Tchaikovsky, but omg, I can't get enough of your videos! I don't know that much about music, but this channel has become one of my favorites. Thank you for everything! :)
This video is unbelievably fantastic! It was such a unique film score analysis that changed how I thought about the movie and the music. You blew my mind!
Your videos are so well done!! Ever think about possibly doing an analyzation of Hans zimmer’s lion king score? To me, sections like “to die for” are some of the most creative and powerful moments of film music
Something else is the “chase theme” at the start of act 3. The pizz stepwise motion and the unusual time signature with an extra beat makes the unsettled feel stronger. It’s used when chasing Riley and chasing sadness.
I know 8-bit has the video game music analysis thing kind of on lock, but I would love to see this channel's perspective on some of the great video game scores. I think this channel's tone would fit especially well with Journey. The score in that game is the primary means of communicating the story.
Where's the music playing at the very beginning coming from? It's painful that it sounds so familiar but I couldn't remember the name of it. It's not one of the four songs licensed to the video.
Does the bundle of joy melody change from being on the beat, to being syncopated to then being on the beat again? If so, might that be a microcosm of the story itself!
Why such a fetiche with music "themes" in film scores? And, isn´t it obvious that the score is influenced by the film and vice-versa? Or even more obvious that the film and score when presented together make part of the same work of art? Btw the graphics are very nice, they remind me of gene sequences

Digustingly underrated. How is this channel so unrecognized? Like, this is by far the best in-depth explanation I have seen...
It may be time to concede that the vast majority of folk are looking for circus farts.
“Sadness is after all, never a neutral emptiness. It’s the negative of joy we’ve felt beforehand and that we will feel again.”
I keep coming back to this video. So so so well made. A perfect bonus to the film and its music. Thank you.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so academic yet so moving. Everything about this video is mind-blowing.
Thank you so much Elaine!
@@ListeningIn Please keep doing this! As a fellow musician, your videos give me so much life. You’re simply brilliant!
@@ListeningIn Could you please make a video about the soundtrack for The Angry Birds Movie?
Michael Giacchino is one of the greatest film composers of all time. My personal second favorite, only behind Jonny Greenwood
I completely watched the video before, but since I want to support you and feed the almighty algorithm, I will watch it once more :)
Thank you Steffen! Very much appreciated!

I love this so much. Your channel is a gold mine

Still crying in the club 😭
Ha! What is the club, by the way?
@@ListeningIn I dunno, it's a phrase I've heard online, from a song of the same title. Just means being overly emotional 😅
Oml the Pride & Prejudice Soundtrack at the beginning caught me off guard.. hoooooly it’s so good

Just discovered your channel within the last few days, absolutely incredible analysis. Binge watching all your videos, can't wait for more!

The "warm" reading of sadness' melody is very similar to Life and Death, also composed by Giacchino (for Lost).

I loved reading Andrew's paper. Thanks for making videos about important information so that it is easier to digest.
I know you’re analyzing this movie/score as one whole, but holy shit 0:50 is perfect entirely on its own.
Almost cried, beautiful video...
And now, they have done it again in Inside Out 2!!
Your commentary is incredible!!! Thank you for creating this
One of my favorite movies of all time.
Right in the feels.
Something else is the “chase theme” at the start of act 3. The pizz stepwise motion and the unusual time signature with an extra beat makes the unsettled feel stronger. It’s used when chasing Riley and chasing sadness.
I gladly watched the piece again, well done!
Just beautiful.
Made me cry :( :)
💜 excelent video!
Your channel is amazing! Thank you for the video 🥰
Could you check out some of the Music from The Witcher games, I know you mainly focus on film, but it might be a fun thing to do
That would be really cool, I adore the music from Wild hunt, it is, in my humble opinion, far better than that from the show.

even the video almost made me cry...
Could you do some analysis on Thomas Newman's Finding Nemo score?
You should analyze Zootopia’s score, too. It is composed by Giacchino, too!
Does anyone know what the film shown at the beginning of the video is?
It's Pride and Prejudice 😊
@@melisarodrigueztorres6692 Yup! The 2005 version!! 😊

Liz on top of the world - Jean-Yves Thibaudet. It’s from Pride and Prejudice
@@catwelford thanks! no wonder it sounds so familiar. I gotta revisit this soundtrack :) love Dario Marianelli's music
Inside out is literally the most sophisticated animated film ever made.

I agree with the commenters that watching this again is even better. Off to watch the movie now!
You are amazing!
The part at 8:11 - 8:30 has huge simmilarity in style to Life and Death's intro - ua-cam.com/video/InC_T2FjvL0/v-deo.html

They're from Joe Wright's version of 'Pride and Prejudice'

Perfect Structure? A final solution to any problem is, by definition, a dead solution. Static in its existence. Not buying it, sorry.
Nah, didn't cry at all....
