  • Have you ever wondered how one goes about taking apart a Hoover Dial-A-Matic / Convertible? Well in this video you're going to discover just how much of a pain in the a$$ it actually is!
I have to be honest with you guys - I HATE this job. There's so much that can go wrong, as you'll see with the front panel. If I'd kept pulling it we'd have a ruined machine and a very sad me! Putting it back together is even worse but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
So let's remove the motor from this old girl in readiness for a future video. I'm appalled by the 'repair' I did all those years ago...
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to comment like and subscribe!

That motor is very different from what I have ever seen. What a big chunk of metal! Very interesting.

Thank you for this video! I haven't seen that much metal in a vacuum cleaner, in a long time, truly fascinating how Hoover built it! Please keep up the great work, it was certainly a challenge.

I'm glad that the disassembly seemed to go rather smoothly - if not just for the sake of all our nerves.
That looks to be a beast of a motor crammed into a space barely big enough. I'm surprised there is no room for some sound deadening around the can at least.
A fascinating insight into yesteryear's manufacturing.
I must however bemoan Younger Steve and his use of gaffer tape and sticky tape. There is a place for them - like a Blue Peter project - not inside a lovely vintage vacuum cleaner.
Greatly anticipating the next thrilling installment.
Thank you ever so much for taking the time and effort to set up so many shots to enable us to see clearly what is going on.
    You are a 🌟

I think it would be really interesting to fit a more modern motor unit, like you did your Constellation. Now I know that’s a far bigger task (and may not even be possible), since it would have to do more than physically fit it in since you have to seal it and deal with the belt drive. But having an old Dial A Matic with proper modern vacuum power would be super cool.

Nice videos. I have two DAM's here in the states. They weigh a ton and are a pain in the ass to push and hoover my house..I prefer the direct flow Convertible, which I have 28 of. I have a Concept One which is self propelled, which is a great improvement ofnthe DAM. Love your voice, I fell asleep watching...ASMR. and you are very handsome. Love that workbench. These DAM models are a pain to work on.

This will help my put in a different trans, in my power drive. Question: on a power drive model that handle has a shaft through it, removing that?

Dial a matic with power drive is very rare

Any ideas on removing the handle on a U6000 series? You can pull it to the end of the metal but it will not move any further. I am trying to ship it and my prices are going to double if I can't get it off. I have never had a vacuum designed like that.
