0:18 Do's and don'ts after rotator cuff surgery
    1:34 Exercise 1: the pendulum
2:37 Exercise 2: passive external rotation with a golf club
    3:56 Exercise 3: Ball squeeze
5:05 Exercise 4: Passive abduction with a golf club
    5:52 Exercise 5: shoulder shrug
Be sure to wear your sling after your arthroscopic rotator cuff tear surgery (phoenixspineandjoint.com/shou.... The rotator cuff muscles were sewn back together during the surgery, and they need to heal back. The healing process takes months to be complete. There are several do’s and don’ts after rotator cuff repair surgery.
Wear your sling (provided at the time of surgery) at all times --except when you are bathing, doing your prescribed exercises, or getting dressed-- for 4-8 weeks, depending on the size of the tear that was repaired, and the type of repair done.
Avoid internal rotation of your shoulder except as instructed in these exercises. Internal rotation is the movement of putting your hand behind your back.
In order to keep your repair safe after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair surgery, the exercises are all passive in nature. Here are the exercises you should do as demonstrated in the video.
    The pendulum
    External rotation with a cane
    Shoulder rolls
Active stretches for your elbow wrist and hand

I'm a week post-surgery. Went in believing the MRI (small posterior tear, small bicep tear, arthritis). Post op-small posterior tear, near complete thickness bicep tear, severe impingement. I had my other shoulder (injury) with almost the same diagnosis 20 years ago. Recovery was horrible. This guy did something different because a week post-op and I have little pain! He told me to get on a couple of the same exercises you show. I'm going to double check with him but I'm hoping to start doing all of your exercises asap. Thanks for the great info!

I had bicep, rotator cuff, bone spur and joint decompression 5 days ago. Overall pain is very manageable, I expected it to be worse, now will start the passive exercises. The 4 sites the Dr entered have zero pain, no bruising etc. So far seems to good to be true, making sure I don't overdo passive exercises and only bending elbow and not using actual arm to do anything. I am actually amazed at the just random pain, usually if trying to sleep, I expected much worse.

@@rotwiler7674 I’m two weeks post-op on rotator cuff and bicep. I’m almost suspicious it’s been so easy. There was no pain at all the first three days because of a nerve block they did. But even after it wore off there is very little pain as long as I don’t accidentally kick on my shoulder or bicep muscles. Haven’t needed any pain meds. Just a few muscle relaxers here and there to help with the spasming in my upper back that I was already experiencing before surgery. And even that isn’t as bad as it was pre-op with my shoulder being in the sling now.

@@BestPracticeHealth Took a fall in early October and went to emergency and they did X-rays. Was told there were no broken bones and figured that it would just need rest. Didn’t happen ☹️ Went for a MRI 12/21/22 and found out then about the tear.
Surgery was on 1/18/23. So it was a lot longer than I wanted but it seems to be healing well at this point. Physical therapy is helping me a great deal.

    • @BestPracticeHealth

Absolutely, your concern about the risk of developing a frozen shoulder after rotator cuff tear repair is valid. It's crucial to act promptly to avoid this painful condition.
Given that you're eight weeks post-surgery and experiencing limited shoulder movement, getting into physical therapy is essential. I strongly recommend reaching out to your surgeon without delay and requesting a prescription for physical therapy. Keeping your doctor informed about your progress is vital.
Orthopedic surgeons' expertise can vary significantly, especially in shoulder surgery. If your surgeon is board-certified in orthopedics and further certified in sports medicine, sticking with them is a wise choice. However, if you have any doubts, seeking a second opinion from a best practice certified sports medicine doctor might be a prudent step.
Remember, timely and appropriate physical therapy can make a significant difference in your recovery. Don't hesitate to advocate for your health and well-being.

it depends on how much repair was done but in general the repaired tendons (with achors) , tendons really, take about 6 to 8 weeks to heal. So not surprised. Thus healing and repair protection is most important. If u make a mistake, it is better it be no exersice. The point of any movement is to keep the other parts active, but with care. Some doctors don't like much rehab the first four weeks, yet allow to sleep on the shoulder without sling by the 4th day, allow u to type at the keyboard as soon as u feel like it within days, allow u off the sling at 2 weeks except in public just to warn others to stay away...NO LIFTING THE ARM is most important for six weeks. Follow your doctors advice, ask questions and let the PT know, the PT may not be on the same page following a general protocol.

  • @Machria23
    @Machria23 3 місяці тому +2

1-3 Weeks post surgery? Doing exercise’s? NOOOOOOOOOO! DO NOT MOVE YOU ARM OR SHOULDER in ANY way for 6 weeks, period. The ONLY acceptable thing to do prior to 6 FULL WEEKS, is a very light pendulum movement hanging down, THAT IS IT. The rest of this stuff should be done with your Dr. and /or PT supervision AFTER ATHE 6 weeks. Years ago, shoulder surgeons used to think it was important to move a bit during the 6 weeks in a sling to keep from getting “locked up”. But they now know that is wrong, you are best to wait a full 6 weeks to get the tendon (whichever was fixed) to completely re-attach to the bone which will take 6 weeks. Then slowly start to move, stretch and strengthen it… At 6 weeks, you are only 30% healed, it takes 6 to 9 months before those tendons are 100% healed.
Lots of bad advice here on youtube, much of it is outdated. Be careful and listen to your surgeon. I’m at 8 weeks post op, 1 1/2 weeks of PT, which is only very light manipulations form the PT doc, and some light exercises at home, NO WEIGHT, JUST SIMPLE MOVEMENTS IN PARTICULAR DIRECTIONS.
FYI, not my words or advice, I’m no expert. These are the words from my Surgeon who is one of the most renowned ortho shoulder surgeons in the country, and has invented many of the new arthroscopic techniques being used today.
    Careful folks
