  • How do you find the interquartile range of a set of data? What is the interquartile range? In this video we go over an example of finding the interquartile range (IQR), or inter-quartile range if you prefer it hyphenated. We define interquartile range as well, if you're into that sort of thing. Hot dog eating contest statistic retrieved from nowhere at all. Let me know if you would like more statistics lessons! its because your teacher is teaching in away that he has to worry about the students douts and misunderstandings while in youtube video he can just explain the concept without having to worry about the audience knowing that you can always rewatch the video. I hate when people put these comments because very rarely the teachers are actually bad its just that you probably you don't pay attention.

    So the IQR is the same as the median?

    • @WrathofMath
      @WrathofMath  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching and not quite, the IQR is related to the median, but they're not the same. Let me briefly list the steps here once more.
      1. Find the median of your data. This splits the data into two halves: the half below your median, and the half above your median (you can ignore the actual median at this point).
      2. Find the median of the lower half of data (this is Q1).
      3. Find the median of the upper half of data (this is Q3).
      4. The IQR is Q3 - Q1.
      Does that help?

    • @boxbuddys8544
      @boxbuddys8544 3 роки тому

      @@WrathofMath But Q3-Q1=Q2. Q2 but the middle.

    • @WrathofMath
      @WrathofMath  3 роки тому +1

      That's just a coincidence. Our ordered data set was 1, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Suppose we changed 4 to 5. Then the median would be 5, Q1 would still be 2, Q3 would still be 6.5, and so the IQR would still be 4.5, which does not equal the median. Does that make sense? Sorry for any confusion!

    if its a large number like 34,67 how can i find the number between ?

    • @WrathofMath
      @WrathofMath  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and good question! The number halfway between is just the average of the two numbers. The number halfway between 3 and 5 is 4, which is the average of 3 and 5: (3+5)/2 = 8/2 = 4. Similarly, the number halfway between 34 and 67 is the average of them: (34 + 67)/2 = 101/2 = 50.5.

    I'm calculating the IQR with R, and I obtained another thing. Can you explain me, why?

    • @WrathofMath
      @WrathofMath  3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and you mean R the programming language? If you programmed it to do precisely what we did here and it is giving a different result there must be an error in the code, but if R has a built in IQR function, it must be calculating it a different way, or it's possible you entered the data incorrectly. I am not familiar with R so I don't know about its IQR function if it has one.

      I was talking about R the programming lenguage, thanks for answer.

  • @MichaelZHY
    @MichaelZHY 3 роки тому +1

    Sorry to say this, but I disagree with the method you used here as the result maybe wrong.
    When using the formula (n+1)/4 to find the Q1's positions, you get 2.25, that means Q1 is more close to the second data (1) instead of right in the middle between 1 and 3. so the Q1 = 1x0.75+3x0.25= 1.5 Same to Q3, use 3(n+1)/4, you get 6.75, so Q3=6x0.25+7x0.75=6.75 and IQR= Q3-Q1=5.25
    Hope you could rethink the method you use, and give a new tutorial on this topic, as many students may learn from this video and make mistakes in their exams.

    I need an explanation on how he got 6.5 from 6 and 7 and 2 from 1 and 3. If both numbers were 3 or 3,3 would q1 be 1 ? 0?
    If two numbers in middle of one side were 6,9 would it be 3?

  • @jennydinh7886
    @jennydinh7886 3 роки тому +1

    for 2:20 what if they're equal numbers so you dont have a number between it

    • @WrathofMath
      @WrathofMath  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching Jenny, and good question! When I say "halfway between" what I am really trying to say is "average". So we want the average of the middle two numbers. To get that, we add them and divide by 2. Like (1+3)/2 = 2 and (6+7)/2 = 6.5. The average is halfway between the two numbers, but talking about it as an average I think is the easiest way to answer your question. So if our lower half of data was 1, 3, 3, 4 for example, the median of this lower half of data (which is Q1) would be the average of the middle two numbers - 3 and 3. The average of 3 and 3 is (3+3)/2 = 3. Long story short, if the two numbers in the middle are the same, then that number is the median.
      As a side note, I'll point out this situation is still "halfway between". So for example, what does it mean to be halfway between 1 and 3? It means you are as far away from 1 as you are from 3. Such a number is 2, which is 1 from 1 and 1 from 3. So what is halfway between 3 and 3? Well that would be 3, since it is 0 away from 3 and 0 away from 3.

    WTF??? You can do that to find the Quartiles easily?????? Our teacher teached us to use a Equation.
    (K × N) ÷ 4, where K is the Quartile(i.e Q1 would be 1) and N as the total amount of data you have.

    • @WrathofMath
      @WrathofMath  5 місяців тому +1

      There are a few ways to find quartiles, and they won't always give the same result, the idea is for large N values (for which we'd actually do an analysis) the differences are small. Also, the formula you were given is easily programmed into a computer, whereas the way I show in this video is a purely by hand description. Thanks for watching!
