*HEY Y'ALL! Since you're gonna be locked up in the house with all that extra toilet paper this weekend...might as well jump on the kit and practice 🤓You've probably seen a lot of tips on drum fill ideas, but I'd bet all the loose change in my sofa that you haven't seen THIS one 😉Cheggit out!*
Funny thing i found out what alot of the people are doing with the TP besides the obvious, they are using it to make masks. BY THE WAY IN ON ESIT DOWN MY SINGLES ARE ALREADY GETTING FASTER TO 175 TO 200 ,I MEAN IM NOT A BEGINNER OR INTERMEDIATE MAYBE ALITTLE PAST THAT JUST NEEDED A PUSH IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION,ROB AS ALWAYS THANK YOU MY FRIEND
Well, that sure is right. how are you? I know for me this whole quarantine thing just means more practice. Like seriously, when im at school, i have to be awake for five and a half hours without practice because they say it's gonna be helpful later in life when they're teaching us things that are 90% immaterial, and im driving my teacher crazy when i'm tapping rudiments on my desk, and im driving myself crazy when i don't practice, so i have this constant withdrawal. So now, the next week or so, no more unpracticing?! I don't know, i'm norwegian, who cares?! Anyway, Practice!
I wish I could be jamming this weekend but unfortunately ... I'm driving all over town searching for TP. LOL
Thank you thank you thank you. 62 years young love playing More than ever after finding you, your the man.
I literally, seriously cannot stop laughing at the TP reference. This world has gone truly mad. Thanks for a good laugh, Uncle BD. 😄
I've been drummer for almost 60yrs, but I'm having more fun than ever. I thank drummers like Rob Brown that are not only creative and seek excellence, but are also willing to share.
I'm right there with you, rtuckersr. 60 yrs and counting. Very appreciative of Rob sharing.
55 yrs here Buddy Rich used my snare, I didn't tune it for months
That’s why good quality sounding snares are so important.
Spending a fortune on drums to get expensive toms and bass drums ...not as much.
Cymbals ..definitely yes !
Roy Beckerman my toms sounds like shit still though . Too boomy and resonant
@@microchrist6122 I don't own an acoustic kit so take this with a grain of salt, but I believe your heads might be the main cause of that rather than the actual drums. From what most other people say, the heads and tuning are the biggest factor in how your drums sound so you might need to mess around with that
My fav part about playing fills on the snare is that almost any time you hit the rim, intentionally or not it sounds good as opposed to banging a rim on a tom only fill.
Also, unless you're trying to play some epic drum fill such as 'In The Air Tonight' or one of Neil Peart's tom tom runs around the kit, almost all fills sound more dynamic and musical with some snare hits included.
Damn that snare sounds pretty sweet man.
Ha ha! That's what came to mind when he was talking about "tasty"...
Rob is my favourite teacher on UA-cam.
Dat snare though... Smokin!
Rob, I am a 57 year drummer In West Virginia. I am a very simple time keeper and I think that all your lesson are what I call practical drumming. I really enjoy them. I have been working on your 3 rudiment excercises on my pad and what a difference it has made on the kit. Thanks so much
for your very practical lesson. God bless my friend.
Hey Rob, I doubt you’ll ever see this comment, but your videos have inspired me to keep learning to play better. it’s hard to believe you’re 100% self taught! Thank you for your unique and down to earth approach to drumming you’re an awesome teacher. God bless!
I did indeed see it, and thanks! 👊🏽🤓
Thanks for the refresher. I'm stuck in that rute. Funny how easy it is to forget the snare and how great it is
I love you man, your ideas, you never, ever show off, you just play ... musically. And inspired all of us in the process. That's how to teach and inspire.
Young students almost always just play variations on a tom tom roll, because they're thinking about what to hit, not what rhythms they're playing. I have them work on fills using only the snare. Once they have some variety of snare fills going on, I suggest they try moving some notes to the toms or cymbals.
Another great lesson. Thank you Rob. Love your videos.
We all might as well lock ourselves in our drum rooms and work on "the things we suck at" and take advantage of the extra time we have on our hands!
I always find those sticks amusing....Well used 🙂
Snare drum sounds great. Chops sound great too.
Love that last fill.. Those doubles be tasty 👌
Is it weird that i consider you my primary drum teacher?
Me too! Rob is a great example and inspiration for great technique and positive attitude. He is also very kind in his approach to some of us that struggle with the early stages of drumming.
That's one helluva snare drum...
THX-Rob ! Guter Tip... :)
I understand your approach to drums and teaching them.
5:44 KA KA KA TA TATA 😂 love your videos mate!!
Awesome tip! And as you said, I tend to do fills on my toms, Thanks Man!👍🏻🤘🏻🥁
Very helpful tip. Yeah, I can see how it works. Musical 16ths to start with. Thanks alot Rob Brown.
Mr. Rob Brown, thank you for being so generous with your information, your willingness to share and give back. Many blessings for you!
I loooove this man! Making music out of 16ths using only 1 note
You have changed my drumming for the better just in one month! Ive been playing for 15 + years. BA in Music. Drum teacher for 5 years. I wish i followed you years ago cause there is something about your approach and knowledge that is so obtainable in each of your lessons. So far my favorite video of yours is the 6 shuffle grooves that you should know! Keep doing what you're doing Rob!
- Chris
Awesome video Rob!
I thought my comp froze for sec.. haha. Awesome practice idea
Rob.. thanks!
Great idea!
I' m off & running on just
the snare drum for now!
Thank you , Rob :D Fantastic tip. :D
Thanks have a good day
Just what we needed, thank you Rob 👍
I love you Rob! And that kit is super beautiful to listen to and look at! Stay healthy my brother!
Great advice, thanks for sharing your expertise.
Rob, what can I say, you are the best drum teacher out there. Thank you for the new content, and the inspiration!
Beautiful!! I never thought to focus gills on the snare. I’m definitely sharing this one!!
It's so simple yet effective, thanks for sharing!
Nice work dude!
Great lesson. Thx!
Thanks Rob !
I'm with the other guys for sure on, paying forward your gift to us veteran and beginner drummers like myself.
I just really need to know how to do the most popular and basic fill there is, a military roll. I guess that's what it's called. The roll that sounds like a sizzle. Once I get that, I'll be ready to move on to all of your other videos. How in the world is that done. I'm left handed but, my set-up is like yours, hi hat on my left.
You’re looking for ‘press roll’ aka ‘buzz roll’ aka ‘closed roll’. The differences in the terms are debatable, but searching them will get you the result you want.
The secret to a good press roll - RELAX, and keep your strokes even (even height, even power, even speed). It’s not easy to create a smooth roll with no “pulsing”, it’s something I’ve been working on for years, so don’t be discouraged. And don’t let it stop you from moving forward.
Experiment a little with the press, you can really feel/hear the difference from no pressure to little pressure to lots. Experiment with stick height, feel the difference. Watch players with great press rolls and learn from them - Stanton Moore comes to mind. Art Blakey was famous for the perfect buzz roll, unfortunately we don’t have him on video teaching it. Anyway, searching those terms will get you where you wanna go! You can do it!
As usual it was good Rob ,been with you for awhile and not only learned alot again after years off my drums, i was getting into a Jazz only syndrome and fills were 95% doubles and paradiddle ,but what I want and really need is more straight singles, i know you said add the doubles, and rudiments, but i want faster singles ,I know it sounds weird but thats what I want .I also was always working on toms so ill give your system a jolt, thanks Rob!
Thank You, Rob! Great lesson, I think it is my missing link.
you sound really good man! great content :D
Smooth 😎👊🏽
Good video! This is great information. I'm going to work on this!🥁
Nice. I was just practicing with a swing jazz group and I ended up relying on my snare for most of the short fills. Sounded great!
I've been feeling that creative rut. Surprisingly I had a;erady started adding more snare. Time to explore some more. Thanks Rob.
Those Cymbals.......wow!!!!!!!!!
That snare is tuned so nicely which I believe would help.
Mr Brown thank you Brother 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
...I was thinking about your advice this morning when Jimi Hendrix "Fire" came on the truck stereo & emphasized your point perfectly!
Killer sounding kit!
That snare drum sounds really good
Cool stuff as always!
Uncle Beatdown! Longtime matchstick drummer here. I wish to request a video with your thoughts on, or an evaluation/ comparison of matchstick to traditional grip drumming, with tradeoffs and benefits of each.
Keep bringing the exceptional content! 🤜🤛👍
I wish i could practice alot more but unfortunately I have a full time job with the state of texas but any little chance I get i pull up your vids and begin a practice session..Thank you so much for inspiring me everyday and bieng a great teacher!🤗👍❤🇨🇱
Smart! 🤘😀👍
Oh my my, you have just opened the eyes of a blind man.
Brass A&F singing sweetly...
Thanks rob. I’m loving the tips and tricks mate. You give so much value with these lessons... you are a blessing brother thank you 🙏🏽
You've met Stevie Wonder?!
I have indeed. I very special moment in time for me. 😊
@@drewhorley well, i was fortunate enough to meet Roger Waters once, it was the greatest moment in my whole 12 year long life
Epic man!!
Nice video
Great video, thanks. One suggestion. When you went on to the rudiments section at the end, how about writing up on screen which one, or groups of, rudiments you're doing?
the beatdown - whack whack whack!
Love it ............Back to Basics !! Rudiments are highly overlooked , its like saying you don't need to know the Alphabet. LOL
That’s why it’s good to have a good snare.
You don’t need to spend thousands on expensive toms and a bass drum.
A good snare and good quality cymbals, are the key to a good kit, without costing a fortune.
Hey Rob, thanks for the tip! I’m starting my practice today :)
I was wondering if you would consider splitting the “how to” part into the difficulty levels. Either beginner/intermediate/advanced or first practice this, when you get better add that, finally when you’re an expert add that.
I’m an advanced beginner and I find it challenging to follow on which beats you accents fall and what notes you are playing (although I appreciate it wasn’t the point of this technique, I like to copy someone first and then develop my style from there). Hope that helps :)
Buddy Rich was the master of the snares...Gene Krupa....the toms.
Hi Rob.... I'm very confused which the sequence that I can pick and play from all of your video to start playing a drum... Can suggest me? May be in a form off playlist that I can follow... Thanks in advance for your great help
Damn you guys are quick!! My coffee cups came today!!
Nice. Thanks for supporting, man. Sip responsibly 😎
Yea man, this has been going though my mind for pass couple of months; about could I, or should I, or do drummer actually play and record with just one piece. This will help come around must faster,
That sly look when you knew you dropping heat
Just that you care about me and it sounds good and interesting I love you🎶📯😘
Hitting your greatest hits Sir! I work in Bio-Containment it awt to be real interesting in the coming days! I miss your work Sir!
Whapah!!
I've been trying to master the Flippity Flop rudiment for years. Any tips?
I’ve been trying to figure out the parawhippie-doodle-dingle-dongle-dangle-mcslamflamsham-nonuplet-drag for a couple months but I can’t get it down
Great insight as usual RB, but can you tell me how a brotha can get a "Groove over Chops" T in purple?
Thanks for a nice dose of normalcy, Rob.
... and way to nail the dismount.
When are you going to do another drum solo album beatdown?
Hi Rob, just a quick question. Did you build your studio at home? I want to buy a kit but I am also afraid of annoying my neighbours. How can I balance this because I don't like electronic drums, so this is not an option? Thanks for your classes.
Man the merch is 😎 but getting it sent to New Zealand is really costly
That's the baddest snare i've ever heard!
A&F raw brass
Cool😁
The first video of yours I saw was, "Why your snare sounds like craaap." The answer was...."because it's a crappy snare. " Hahaha
Listen to John Mayer Who Did you think I was Live at the cross roads. Steve Jordan And Pino Palladino kill it
Robb now you tell me to hold on... well my man I couldn't, I hit your merch shop hard last week. just so you know your to funny.
I've been drumming for years and I have the bad habit of not knowing when to come out of a fill. I find it hard to lead the changes when jamming with other musicians. I'm not sure how to keep coming out perfectly on the one. Some of the fills in iron maiden trooper are hard to time to get out of and into the beat correctly without stutters.
I know this is way off topic, but do you ever have trouble tuning your floor toms? As in getting a good pitch difference in all of your drums? I want to imagine with the Phoenix kit it's no problem, but I'm wondering is it a common problem?
gosgood1973 look up his drum tuning video. Works like a charm
@@tylerdavis270 will do.
I got stuck with playing only 6 stroke roll fills for about 2 years and I got soo bored.
Hey...is that you walking through a record store in an episode of Titans? (Season 2, Episode 5)
If it was, I wants my money💰
Rob Brown - Hahaha 😆
Flams, ratamacues and flippity flops lol
And then you end up playing same fill on the snare. :D
First 🤙🏾
🥇
17...... well, almost 67, but who's counting!
fourth
Second
🥈
☝️😄
Fifth
well if my snare sounds fuckin close to that i'd never use toms again
30 years ? How old r u dude ?
Personally, I’m super bored with fills on the fourth measure. It’s not inventive or interesting to me anymore
A simple roll on the snare transition to the verse, chorus, etc. can be subtle but effective. Do it with crescendo ending with a sharp rimshot.
@@terrencenbanbury5220 I prefer to work out something the band is doing and play to that. I am not a "drums must be noticed" kinda guy, and I am working on making that my thing. Moving away from fills and showy offy stuff, but I can tell the project i will be involved with soon will give some resistance. I just want to try something I don't hear very often. Mike Bordin comes to mind as an example
I agree you have to play what the music wants, so to speak. It's not about filling space or showing chops. It's about being a musician. Every bit as much as every other instrumentalist is. I think you are on the right track.
