Unboxing Utah: What It's Like Living In Utah

  • Is everyone in Utah a Mormon?
Is everyone in Utah a member of the LDS?
Seriously, is everyone in Utah Mormon?
We’ll answer those questions and more. So, grab your mountain bike and your BOM, we’re gonna unbox the state of Utah!
Open: Oh a Mormon church. Or a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This is a very important part of Utah’s culture. But it’s also very private. Like if you’re not Mormon, YOU can’t go inside. But Mormons say it’s not about secret. It’s about sacred. The Mormon church is a mystery to a lot of people, and a very uniquely American religion. Members of the mormon faith are aware that they are sometimes seen as a source of mystery and suspicion. The membership numbers for the LDS are shrinking, and today, about 1.7% of America’s population is Mormon. That’s about the same number as the Jewish population.
Yes, it’s true that Mormons have a big influence on the politics and everything else in the state, but this whole state isn’t Mormon. Sorta. In order to get a well rounded view of the state of Utah we need to get out of the church and out of the home and head out into the rest of the state and see what else is going on. Only then can we truly know what it’s like to live in Utah.
This is Utah. As you’ll see, most of the population is in the Salt Lake City metro area, and that area is growing super fast. There’s also a lot of other stuff going on in Utah, though, especially when it comes to exploring the outdoors. Utah is a very interesting state, and there’s something different around every corner.
We’re going to begin here in Southwest Utah. Now southern utah is one of the prettiest if not the prettiest part of Utah. Right here along the Arizona border are many of Utah’s national parks, touristy towns and St. George.

Daughter’s a techie. She was leery about taking transfer - 15 yrs ago - from SoCal to SLC. She & husband loved Bountiful, UT. They were just confused by all the neighbors showing up to help them move in!

I laughed at your comment about how people from Utah complain a lot. That statement is completely true! I manage an apartment building in Seattle and had multiple residents relocate from Utah which was a complete nightmare. They moved to Seattle for a Church group and immediately started complaining about everything and their neighbors. Seeing them transition into a large city like Seattle was a bit entertaining. They started changing their tune and realized that living in a big city has a lot of variables that are not in your control. This goes the same for residents from Idaho. Definitely was a learning and entertaining experience.

I'm not leaving anytime soon. Southern Utah is gorgeous and is the best nature exploration I've ever encountered as well, plus Vegas and some really hip towns in Colorado are nearby as well.

I'm well practiced but I'm really good at ignoring the church, therefore I lead a really happy life in Utah.

It's a beautiful rural community along highway 89 at the base of the Manti LaSal mountains. Now I live in Northeast Utah in Coalville. A small town just outside Park City. It's nice here too. Mormonism isn't as big of deal anymore. I think us non-mormons are finally the majority.

Living in Utah is wonderful for people like me. By “people like me” I mean people who enjoy, with unbridled enthusiasm, a cosmopolitan mix of available outdoor activities (not to mention the growing cosmopolitan vibrancy of certain Utah cities). For me, skiing is intoxicating for its mountainous, wintry grandeur coupled with its gravity driven exhilaration. From where I live I am an hour or less from multiple world class ski venues, the vast majority of which are also available to snowboarders enamored of the same excellent virtues. Our mountains are positively exquisite aesthetically and afford people truly marvelous year round experiences. Then there is the red rock country - as alive with incomparable beauty as it is with, in many places, the stirring footprints of ancient peoples and other prehistoric life. The richness of Utah’s outdoor variety is, if not entirely unique, among exceedingly few comparable places.
To my way of thinking the cons are political. Although in a technical sense The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a religion, its pervasive dominance subjects the population at large to its strictures as if it were also the state’s dominant political party (which I’d say it is). Utah is politically conservative in the extreme, a quality that threatens some of the things that make Utah wonderful. Witness the antipathy that encouraged Donald Trump to (try to - that story isn’t over yet) dramatically shrink Bears Ears and Grand Escalante Staircase, opening irreplaceable natural treasures to the ravages of coal and uranium mining. The state is aggressively one-party conservative, even though the population in general has substantially more moderate, even progressive elements. Still, our anti-regulation, pro-business political dominance contributes to poisonous Salt Lake Valley air, a related appetite to enlarge motor vehicle access everywhere, and a strong social subtext attributing the privations of our state’s less fortunate to their own lack of moral fiber/self-indulgent unwillingness to better themselves.
It is possible that the time may come when I find the cons overwhelming the pros, but ongoing shifts in the state’s population make me optimistic that opposite tendencies will ultimately prevail here. For now and the foreseeable future, I’m staying put.

Fun fact #2: Although it's true that only members with temple recommends can attend the temple, when a new temple is built, or one is being renovated, they will allow the public to go inside and walk through before they are dedicated. Hi Nick, I love your videos, and have never commented on any, but as a resident of Utah for the past 25 years, and as an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I wanted to make a few clarifying comments...1. Ya, the green jello thing anymore is more of a popular stereotype than anything. 2. I have never heard anyone prioritize their politics over their faith. Certainly faith probably informs people's political views, but church leadership emphasizes, over the pulpit, at every election cycle that they DO NOT endorse any political party or candidate, and we as church members are encouraged to vote our conscious, not for the GOP; and 3. I do not see the youth of the church leaving in droves; sure, the church doesn't retain every youth, but youth leave and then they often come back, as do older members. If anything, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a strong vibrant youth population who are known for leaving the state of Utah to do missionary work for 2 years or 18 months which makes them stronger, and this in turn, their service grows the size of the church membership in other areas all over the world. Keep the videos coming Nick, they are great!
