using the stationary block is good after you pop your taunt ult. You can also aggro ranged units if you have the right perk, just dont get shot in the back. But in general yes, it's very situational and you are useless if you're not using it to draw aggro
You do have complete 100% dmg immunity vs melee, so you can technically lock down 7 Crushers at once attacking you in the corner and save your team. So it CAN be used properly super situationally. But the way most people use it, that's not the case. Also, it shouldn't be necessary if you have good positioning.
You make the most in depth guides I've seen on UA-cam. I'm really enjoying ogryn with this build. The only one I havent tried yet is zealot and that's next for me. Ogryn is my favorite so far.
Weirdly enough, I've actually had pretty good results blocking doorways. When dealing with a horde, I've kept the entire run at bay, which allowed the team to deal with them as a leisure, rather than necessity. Especiailly when paired with a Psyker or Zealot throwing fire. On the bigger doorways, I stand to one side (slightly angled) and hit the Taunt to keep them focused, while leaving a clear side open to shoot away. I've NEVER had an instance where the rest of the team didn't pick up on what I was doing, to use the shield as cover for melee, while the Psykers hit the aoe damage. To say it makes you useless is a misrepresentation, because if ALL the active enemies are hitting a stationary Ogryn without doing damage, they're NOT attacking anyone else, letting the team safely deal with pretty much anything. If you know what you're doing, being a tank, it can be a VERY effective tactic when dealing with funneling enemies, choke points or no. Good video and I'll have to check the channel later for some of the other builds.
You're technically correct, and I would expand on that if I made this video again. You do need a good team though for it to be worth it, otherwise the mission can take a very long time. I wanted to encourage tank players to play more actively. Most of the time it's better to attack, not block, for the damage debuff and CC. (Sorry for late reply; was away.)
I'm not getting any money out of this right now, so this is just to have fun at the moment. ( I don't need a huge active community.) I have several other build guides in the making. Cheers!
I don't really play auric maelstrom (or much auric) right now as pub games are a bit annoying at that level. I find having the cooldown on the curios is generally preffered and then having Loyal Protector debuff at 25% more damage is significant. But then I don't go the bleed route and take the elite kill CD node (Bruiser). I get the skill back quickly and use it constantly with mobs. Mixed mobs definitely drop quicker. I'm going to try this and see how it goes.
Indeed very comprehensive guide. Well deserved like & subscribe. I guess it's time to give the shied another go instead of the usual bull butcher/bully basher 🤔 Kickback is imho indeed most likely the best overall pick in this case but I going to try this with grenadier gauntlet for more sniping capabilites (pinpointing target is a must blessing, shattering impact a nice bonus). Because i don't trust my team mates I'll give up that +15 toughness and +10% toughness damage reduction and i'll take heavyweight for 2-shotting reapers n crushers if need arises (well ok, crushers are left with very little hp after two non-crit hits so almost as good as dead ) and then lynchpin to make up a little for those missing +15 toughness and +10% toughness damage reduction talents.
Thanks! Maybe I'll give that a try myself. I never got into using the Gauntlet. Slab Shield was always my preferred melee because Gunners were a pain in the butt to deal with as Ogryn. Maybe because I still remember how the game used to be like on release...
@@WaltzingBear oh yea, those were the days, been playing since beta myself 😅was mostly running with the shield too in the early days pretty much for the same reason and maybe got a bit of an overdose back then since ogryns didn't have the same flexibility & variability with weapons and builds as other classes did. I'm starting to think that gauntlet has been quite underrated weapon. Without proper blessings it certainly feels underwhelming on higher difficulties but when you roll a good one you suddenly start 1-shotting almost every human-sized enemy and it can also quickly dispatch even ogryn pack. It's best used as a specialist/elite sniper than a traditional grenade launcher hoping to clear hordes with it.
@@Terentios I started the game as an Ogryn main. My solution to the Ogryn problems back then was to just play Zealot instead. 😆 I should try the Gauntlet, thanks!
@@WaltzingBear I have been testing out the build (with my limited gear) and it has made progress easier and the teams I play with are more satisfied with my gameplay, so thanks a lot.
@@Tonseren Cool, nice! Don't forget you want to use the Shield now for horde clear instead of swinging the gun. (Some of the information I gave in the vid about applying bleed is no longer relevant...)
Great content, you gave many tips about it on the video but are you planning to make a video about key binds and settings(like the one to ping enemies only), I’m new to the game and is difficult for me to slide, missing some finger coordination to shift->ctrl 👊
A specific video, no, unless I'll get more requests for this. I can just tell you how I set up mine: For ping, you want to have your WASD keys fingers free to use and your mouse fingers free to aim and shoot; so I recommend using any of the keys next to Space Bar (L. Alt, Z, X, C, V, B, N). I use C for ping. I also use the radial menu on C at a 0.1 sec. delay, so I can both spam C for quick tag or hold for the radial menu. You want to disable the setting that pings the floor with the quick ping which allows you to spam ping enemies without being annoying to the team by constantly pinging the terrain. This way you only ping enemies and items. For Dodge I use V. Space Bar is only for jump. Special Action is Mouse Button 5. You can also use Middle Mouse. This allows me to use Special Action, Dodge and WASD at the same time. For slide, I didn't use to have Crouch on Ctrl in the past. I basically forced myself to get used to hitting Shift with the ring finger and Ctrl with the pinky, the hard way. It took me more than a week to feel comfortable with it. I don't think there's a workaround for that, just using it until it feels normal. (I play guitar and I'm used to stretching my fingers.) Just like any activity, you get more coordinated by doing it again and again. 😉 If something wasn't clear, let me know!
id take no pushover instead of pained outburst because you are pushing so much you should never run out of feel no pain stacks anyway or at least its an extra point to go elsewhere (for example Slam or Implaceable to help your melee) other than that its a solid build and an excellent video good sir!
Not a bad point. The logic is that I'd rather have a good "worst case" defense, and never use it by playing well, than have better push efficiency when I don't really find I need it. Thanks!
@@WaltzingBearim going to test a few but Slam seems a nice use for the point as you will stagger more faster and just proc skullcrusher more, although given your idea of being the team lead tank (like WoW) "Get stuck in" provides the team a nice movement buff to help them push with you or move around the bulwarks
Since the start of the game shield has been the way I want to play the Ogryn but I never managed to use it efficiently, I'll have to try this build and your advice maybe I can become the bestest Ogryn !
The Slab Shield doesn't have bad damage really, but most of the damage comes from applying the debuff to enemies (60% more dmg for entire team). You also control enemies with stagger and taunt so the way to go is to play like a dedicated tank and go aggressive. You usually will get at least one person on the team that can do decent damage for you, which is enough. Read pinned comment for some corrections. Good luck!
Yeah after watching your guide I think I missed most of the key points to this weapon, I focused on trying to block stuff and get into the fray but completely forgot about pushing things around and the bonuses it provides and I have horrible stamina management and positioning, will try to work on all that now
cudos for a super video, with a perfect short, but adequate explaining of the talents.. im missing explaining of why the bonebreaker aura as tank? u start saying if i cant stay alibe why do damage?
@@WaltzingBear i take my question back! your right! Bonebreaker makes total sense. still cudos for the best video for a tank slab shield. ty very much.
Hello, im late to the party and am pretty new to darktide (just got my third level 30), and i was wondering why you wouldnt take toughness curios if you never really take health damage?
Curios are multipliers. Ogryns have giant HP to begin with. All damage eventually goes through your HP to down you so it's a question of %. Melee damage is fully mitigated if Toughness is at 100%, so it's not a question of how much Toughness you have but if it's full when you take a hit. Ogryns replenish Tougness on heavy hit, so higher Toughness will not mitigate damage in most situations. You want to always stay at 100% Toughness or make sure you're not getting hit. Most of the damage you take is when things go south outside of your control (stealth Bursters, etc.). Health just gives you a better value of punishment taken per point, except for very high Toughness builds like Veteran. For Ogryn, higher Toughness will actually slow down your regeneration, and with the 25% regen on heavy attack, I don't notice a problem staying at 100% Toughness for almost any attack that hits me, even with the current Toughness value I have.
Hi, im using your build, and i cant get gunners to " empty heir mags" and then go melee on me.. they turn taunt red but dont go melee? am i missing something?
Gunners (with the big minigun) won't stop shooting if you taunt them, only the smaller ranged grunts do. Other than that, make sure you have the node that taunts enemies on a block. I have Discord but I don't look at messages daily.
Why all the health curios? As long as you have toughness gunners wont damage your health, and melee damage is mitigated by the amount of toughness you have. So, the more toughness you have, the less health you need. And you can refill your toughness all the time.
Curios are multipliers. Ogryns have giant HP to begin with. All damage eventually goes through your HP to down you so it's a question of %. Ogryns replenish Tougness on heavy hit, so higher Toughness will not mitigate damage in most situations. Toughness can mitigate high-damage hits (Poxbursters, Crusher slams) if it has very high effective value (350+); as an Ogryn you'll never get to that. You don't need more defense against Gunners with this build. I may make a video specifically talking about defensive mechanics in the future... Cheers!
@@WaltzingBear I was under the impression that the melee damage you take was based on the persentage of toughness you have. Example: If you have max 100 toughness points (at 100%) you take no damage on your first hit. But lets say the hit makes you lose 50 toughness points, then you will take 50% damage on a second hit. If the same scenario appears when you have a toughness pool of 200, you would only receive 25% damage on your second hit, because you still have 150 of 200 toughness. Or am I wrong?
@@remyspierings9848 On paper you are correct, however we don't play the game like PoE. Loyal Protector is better defensively, you can get it back fast, it's more flexible and easier to use from range. Listen, you can try them both and decide for yourself. I don't like the idea of "meta" but this is how I play. Stay Close! is not hugely impactful and it costs 1 extra point. Cheers!

Isn't that a guide on Steam? Anything in particular? Just because people make nice looking guides with lots of words doesn't mean everything in it is always the best advice when you actually test how it plays out in a game.
It is a guide on steam. I like your video! Just thought you might like to see the Ogrynomicon as well :) The guide mentions that one of your kickback perks is sub-optimal - however I think you made a great justification for it in the video. Keep up the good content
@lw It's all good. I didn't think you meant anything by it. I base my builds on my own experience primarily, but it's nice to look at other resources. It's a very nice guide overall, by skimming it... They recommend Flak on the Kickback as well. Or you mean the Blessing with Pierce? I need to retest that. It's possible they nerfed the bleed cleave on the gun's melee since I last tested it (used to be really good at launch). That would be a pretty big error on my part if this was nerfed at one of the last patches. Thanks! Appreciate it.
@@AB-ke2lw Crap, they did change how you apply bleed with the gun! It only applies bleed to 2 enemies now. That's a huge error on my part. It used to apply bleed to all enemies hit. I forgot to test that to make sure for the guide. Too late for the video now... Thanks for letting me know!
Right, but Toughness is there to protect your health 🙃Health just has incredible value on Ogryn because base HP. It protects better against stuff like Bursters...
To be honest, I've tried this build and it gets boring quite fast. It's too much to micro manage if you don't end up with a good team, which in most cases you might see yourself wasting your time when fighting at harder difficulty levels, if your team can't clear out enemies fast enough which causes you to spin around too often and do missions slower. It's better to be more offensive than to be a tank in the game, psykers and zealots are by far the most overpowered classes in the game that can effectively do high difficulty levels and deal with most tricky situations without much stress.
Now the part when you started talking about spamming tags, that's something I be trying to do, but obviously I play on Xbox & on top of that I be having controller issues so if anyone see anyone "Not tagging" anything I guarantee coming across people who call that annoying I don't need to come across IF it's gone be that big of problem....I mean damn, shit just happens 🤷🏾♂️ people be complaining about too much shit in this game nowadays & that what cuts off the fun & hype 👎🏾
Dont block your teammates is just obvious... I doubt 2% of ogryn players make the effort to stay to one side. Please tell me you people didnt need to be told this by a youtube guide 😮💨
@@WaltzingBear id hope so too, but im nearly at 1100 hours played, trying to 100% the game, and i almost never see an ogryn player who doesnt walk striaght through you while youre obvioulsy shooting at X
Terrible build, didn't even use heavy-weight. As an Ogryn main, I can say with certainty that you don't play Ogryn often, and you should stay in your lane zealot main. But for real though I would substitute the feel no pain push back for heavy-weight, since the situational advantage with the 30% damage resistance and extra damage dealt is too good to pass up, it is incredibly versatile and I recomend picking it up for all Ogryn builds whether that being tanking or damage.
OMG, thank you! I didn't know! When I made the build after playing Ogryn for 2 missions on Malice, I didn't even bother to look at all the nodes on the tree. HOW BLIND COULD I HAVE BEEN!? Right there, only one point away is an incredible 30% damage and damage reduction node!! I should immediately remove my build from the internet in shame! That will explain why I keep dying all the time when I play my Malice missions. Thank you for your feedback.
@WaltzingBear thank you for taking my feedback seriously, I hope that you never make the same mistake again as that can really make or break a build. Also, I appreciate you adding a pinned comment explaining why you didn't take it despite my comment being the only one that brought it up.
@@melondad4156 I still don't know if you're speaking ironically. When you leave a comment that says "terrible build" people assume that you mean it, regardless if you said it differently in your head. Like I said in the video: the skill tree is very optimized. Thanks for watching.

using the stationary block is good after you pop your taunt ult.
Thanks! 🙂 Hopefully the game will get more than 2k players soon...
This is the darktide equivalent to wows "hobbs way of pulling" :D I will try this!
thanks for the info, great stuff
Even with the recent nerf i am bullying with this build cant wait for a revisit lol
This is an awesome build man keep up the good content i know its hard with how slow fatshark is but this is an amazing video enjoy this sub
I'm not getting any money out of this right now, so this is just to have fun at the moment. ( I don't need a huge active community.) I have several other build guides in the making. Cheers!
Little late here.. But this ABSOLUTELY earned a sub. Thank you!
I guess it's time to give the shied another go instead of the usual bull butcher/bully basher 🤔
Kickback is imho indeed most likely the best overall pick in this case but I going to try this with grenadier gauntlet for more sniping capabilites (pinpointing target is a must blessing, shattering impact a nice bonus).
Love this guide, amazing diz of the ogryns ability to multitask :D Made me laugh.
Thanks!
@@WaltzingBear I saw your uofate and has also myself experienced this 👍🏼
- That kickback shotgun is so epic. It just feels so powerful and is so satisfying to dump into a group and just one trigger pull half a room of guys.
It has some limitations, but it feels great in close range. In long range it's more a CC-stick than a gun.
I can just tell you how I set up mine:
For ping, you want to have your WASD keys fingers free to use and your mouse fingers free to aim and shoot; so I recommend using any of the keys next to Space Bar (L.
If something wasn't clear, let me know!
@@WaltzingBear great! I’ll try it as soon as I come back from Hollidays 👊
I was pretty sure that cover of any form still applied to the Ogryn even if his big ass sticks out from behind it.
for gun id go with the Rumbler or Blastoom ....
If I'm blocking, I'm not hitting. If I'm not hitting, I'm not killing. >:B
id take no pushover instead of pained outburst because you are pushing so much you should never run out of feel no pain stacks anyway or at least its an extra point to go elsewhere (for example Slam or Implaceable to help your melee) other than that its a solid build and an excellent video good sir!
Thanks! I don't understand the question. Bonebreaker's is the cheapest aura to get with this build and it's the better one anyways...
@@WaltzingBear i take my question back! your right! Bonebreaker makes total sense. still cudos for the best video for a tank slab shield. ty very much.
What Ogryn magic is that - in the name of Emperor himself man !
Edit : Ok at this point Darktide is just walking simulator for Ogryns
Nice Video bud thanks a lot
@@WaltzingBear Makes sense, thanks man
Hi, im using your build, and i cant get gunners to " empty heir mags" and then go melee on me.. they turn taunt red but dont go melee? am i missing something?
Cheers!
Your logic stands with Veterans that can stay above 100% Toughness and have a very large Toughness value, not with Ogryns.
My builds abit different than yours and I was just curious. I went with Indomitable vs Loyal Protector because it seemed better for keeping my team alive/ proning entire hordes. Is Loyal Protector a better option? Genuine question, xbox noob here. I also went Stay Close vs Bonebreaker, was that a mistake?
Loyal Protector is better defensively, you can get it back fast, it's more flexible and easier to use from range. Listen, you can try them both and decide for yourself. I don't like the idea of "meta" but this is how I play. Stay Close! is not hugely impactful and it costs 1 extra point. Cheers!
@@WaltzingBear fair enough, I actually went ahead and tried your build in second slot. I like them both for different reasons. I feel like I like mine more when running with random but yours with a good team is bounds better. I subbed!

Take a look at the "Ogrynomicon"
Your saying health is best for this character but if your never losing health shouldn't you go with more toughness?
What?
Dont block your teammates is just obvious...
I doubt 2% of ogryn players make the effort to stay to one side.
Please tell me you people didnt need to be told this by a youtube guide 😮💨
You're overestimating the majority of the player base, based on my experience. I hope most people that watch this already know this though...
@@WaltzingBear id hope so too, but im nearly at 1100 hours played, trying to 100% the game, and i almost never see an ogryn player who doesnt walk striaght through you while youre obvioulsy shooting at X

Hi, do you by chance respond on a Discord ? regards from a fan of your youtube.
"Terrible"? Talk about hyperbole. "Stay in your lane"? That's a bit much.
I main ogryn and use the slab shield but I find myself preferring Indomitable for the bleed stacks, stagger capabilities and the ofc the massive increase of mobility. I like the taunt but find myself just preferring Indomitable because in truth its much tanky and more mobile while giving huge dots along with direct hits.
