Barbie Fashion Designer (1996, PC) - Longplay

- Опубліковано 13 лип 2024
- Barbie Fashion Designer is a dress-up computer game developed by Digital Domain and published by Mattel Media for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS in 1996. The game allows players to design clothing and style outfits. Players can then print off their designs and create clothing for their real-world Barbie dolls. Barbie Fashion Designer was the first commercially successful video game made for girls. After its success, many other girl games would be made, leading to the girls' games movement.
Gameplay
Players can design clothing and outfits through selecting different themes, clothing, colors, and patterns from various menus. Once players have designed their outfit, Barbie models their outfit on a 3D runway. The software also came with special paper-backed fabric, markers, and fabric paint so that the designs could be printed off and made into clothes for real-life Barbie dolls. The game complemented the way young girls already liked to play with their Barbie dolls and this has been said to have led to its success.
Release and reception
Barbie Fashion Designer sold over 500,000 copies in its first two months of release and over 600,000 within the first year of its release, outselling other popular games at the time such as Quake and Doom. According to PC Data, which tracked computer game sales in the United States, Fashion Designer sold 351,945 units and earned $14 million by the end of 1996. It was the country's sixth-best-selling computer game of that year. Commenting on its performance that year, a writer for Next Generation wrote that "Barbie Fashion Designer has done an excellent job at expanding the market and scored well with the female population." It was also the top-selling SKU for Christmas 1997. According to Joyce Slaton of GameSpot, "Mattel's successful innovation [was] placing Barbie Fashion Designer on toy aisles rather than in the boy-dominated software section in toy stores".
Despite this success, the game has received criticism for using stereotypical feminine themes. Purple Moon founder Brenda Laurel has said the game “…perpetuated a version of femininity that was fundamentally lame”. However, its commercial success made it a catalyst for the girls' games movement and proved there was a market for video games designed for young girls.
Jan Davidson of Davidson & Associates said of the game, "It's interesting how that product sold more in a shorter time than any other product in history, including the best selling games! And it's just a niche for girls (there aren't too many little boys playing with that title, I don't think). So that tells you something. It was an incredible hit from a sales perspective. It also tells us how licensed characters can sell product."

my dad and I made this game when I was 8! I will have to show him all these awesome comments ^_^ Thanks for loving it yall!
Wait you made this game together with your dad or played it with your dad?
@@Nostalgia_Realm I googled her name and she gave her dad the idea for the game
@@CoquetteClochette Holy, it's true! Crazy
Oh wow. This was my early childhood. I’m 33 now and thought about this game.
Tampa Bay Times I believe.
This game was fun! Anyone remember waiting 100 years for the fashion show to render, printing out the clothes and peeling the glue dot stickers to put them together?
I remember. Ohhh I remember.
OMG YES. And the horrible clothing made by the fabric printer thing
I remember watching my sisters playing this lmao.
One of the funniest things I remember is when you try to go on stage without putting anything on, and Barbie tells you "Sorry. You can't go on stage without clothes."
From what I remember, you could send her out in just her underwear, but if you forgot her shoes she would say, "Don't forget my shoes!"
Well I grew up and proved her wrong.
This brings back memories!! lol I feel so old -______-
This has me sobbing. I’m hit with full Barbie nostalgia after the movie and I used to love this game. I remember one day it got scratched or didn’t work with the newer version of windows and I could never play it again. I’d always put it in just to check if it magically fixed itself and got so disappointed every time. This game was the reason I wanted to design clothes my entire childhood. I never had the fabrics or was able to print anything, so I wonder if they got lost to time at some point. Thank you for sharing this!
Edit: I just got to the shoe loading screen and now I’m crying again, that’s the part I remember the most somehow!!
This game saved me from LONG visits to my grandparents house on Sundays 😂
I remember rushing home from 3rd grade to hop on the "big computer" to play this. I was big on making magazines.
Wow I remember playing this all the time. I hope one day they'll release an updated model complete with the fabric so I can buy it pretending I'm buying it for my kids but only getting it out when their in bed 😂
I never had the seam stickers so I taped it up as best I could but I remember printing out those pieces and that insanely long to load fashion show. Now I own 7? Sewing machines and a related degree 🤪
The fashion show loading is what I remember best! I can always remember those pink shoes showing the countdown and how damn long it took!
@@oogahboogahzoogah OMG the flashback I just had O_O ahahah that was the WORST part
I remember this game, but I didn't have any printable fabric or dolls, but making outfits was fun.
My sister and I played this game as kids for HOURS! The music, Barbie’s voice, the fashion show 🥹❤️ love to know the backstory of this!
You can see the outfit animated? That's so cool! And it has instruction to make doll clothes! This game is so cool, no wonder it outsold Doom
My favourite game growing up. Best gift ever, thank you Pa 💝🙏
I loved this game as a kid! So glad I found this video. I needed this nostalgia fix today :)
I’m thankful for my autistic adventures! and I’m grateful for every now and then growing up!
And I’m thankful for my vintage childhood memories’ things (toys, books, cd rom pc games and videotapes)
Sometimes i mimic and act out each one
But most times I’ll enjoy the ones i already have at home and somewhat watch clips of them anywhere i want and anytime i like.
🙂🙂🙂
autism gang
I wish they would keep making Barbie PC games
Oh my goodnessss this was my favorite thing ever when I was a little girl
Does anyone remember that you could put the CD in your CD player and it would play music? I have been trying to hear those songs for over 20 years!
Welcome to the Video Game Hall of Fame - Barbie Fashion Designer!
So many memories. You can tell back then very little effort was put into the game and even the cover "art." It's just a picture of a Barbie doll in front of a printer. Yet me and my bestie would play this for hours. I always thought the man in the audience during the fashion show on the far right looked creepy. And there's something so jarring about the fully rendered 3D Barbie and 2D people in the audience.
So much nostalgia right now...
I loved this too when I was younger!
I loved this game so much
Shit, I remember this game. I remember thinking it was so state of the art. Too bad the fabric paper was so expensive. Also I remember the clothes were shockingly hard to put together for an 8 year old with ADHD.
I remember waiting forever for the fashion show to render. It felt like an eternity waiting for the damn shoes to pop up, lol.
I remember this game because I think my sister owned it... but I have NO memory of her actually using it!
you played it though, didn't you?
I used to Love this game in the 1990's as a kid. Good times 😊😄🌈🎨💅👗👘👕👖🧦👠👡👢❤🧡💛💚💙💜❣💖🖤♡ !
Old childhood memories’ things i enjoy doing within my hobbies “any preposition” my artwork which allows me to multitask everything around me and do my creative and imaginative play.
-toys [play with ‘em]
-books [read ‘em out loud with inflection and join in story time all at once]
-DVDs or/and VHS tapes [watch ‘em using a DVD player, a portable DVD player or a VCR]
-games [playing them/gaming online or on CD rom]
@@austenoliviawheeler3993 😄👍
Wait a sec! You’re communicating with me on UA-cam! How cool is that?!
I actually am watching this because I was joking with someone about how absolutely stoked and badass I thought the whole “rendering your outfit on the runway” was, but being like it probs looks like crap now. 11:08 proved me wrong, no lie I still think its frigging cutting edge seeing a “design” you picked walk the runway with a prerendered animation lmao, it REALLY doesnt look bad at all, I still feel the hype I did when I was 6 lol.
Reading the comments, ppl are saying the render took forever, and I genuinely believe that, but I guess I was so excited I dont remember waiting. Knowing it was on a 1996 cd rom tho, I wouldnt bet any money on that composited “result” not taking 10-30 mins lol
Still, its actually genuinely magical. Granted, 3d renders and realtime 3d was such a new thing back then, so to me its still incredibly interesting that this is doing some kind of customized catwalk for you. Even the little bit of cloth physics in the render- Damn.
Edit: Seeing the shoes in the countdown actually did unearth a pang of irritation in me, I DO remember not seeing those shoes move at all for a VERY ALONG TIME. 😭
Damn, I remember my sister playing this game. My aunt would give her all these fabrics and she made amazing clothes for her Barbie dolls. This game is the reason why she went to a fashion school and had a successful career as a graphic designer
Loved this game, thank you for showing us
I LOVED this game
This was my favourite game!
They recreated this concept that was more recent but it was released 2008. Its called Barbie Idesign Ultimate Stylist Planning to buy them in Ebay haha idc if im too old for it, concepts like this are just so worht experiencing.
nice childhood game!!!! With auto generated TTS!!
I’m 26 now and I 100% remember playing this lol
Omg I remember this when I was 5 years old. 💖
I wanted this game so bad when I was little! I think one of my neighbors? Classmates? Had it
What a neat game 🎯!
Yo, this was my SHIT!!!
Que tudoooo! 💕
Memorieesssssssss :')
Sweet game
Did it going to be in video game Hall of Fame
it was inducted this past Thursday!
8:58 nice pic, just like Arnold Renderer used in Autodesk Maya.
This would be amazing to remake with 3D printers in mind
I remember waiting like 10 minutes for that stupid fashion show to load
dễ thương quá nè
I played that game
Can you use it in a newer computer? I found the CD on ebay but not sure if I can run it in a newer Windows
I have a download link in the video description too in case you wanted to test it. I haven't tried it on Windows 10 but there's not much chance it will work since games from that era were usually 16 bit and can't be run on 64 bit Windows editions.
The best way to play this game on a newer PC is using virtualisation software PCem to emulate Windows 95 or 98. But the software can be hard to work with if you have no technical knowledge.
Another way could be to set up an older edition of Windows like Windows 7 in its 32 bit version inside of software like VirtualBox. There is a chance of this working too.
@@Nostalgia_Realm Hello. Are you able to post both the Digital Domain credits and the Mattel credits for the game? I wanted to update MobyGames with the game's credit information.

Quitting the application: The quit icon does not prompt you before
quitting. Please note that the stop sign at the bottom of the left hand
screen will immediately take you back into your system.
A) THEME WORKSHOP
B) DESIGN WORKSHOP
C) ACCESSORY WORKSHOP: Skate pads for elbows that are available in the
Vacation Fun theme accessories are not available in the Mix and Match
accessories. This is also true of in-line skates and arm bands. In-line
skates and ice skates do not appear in the 3D runway or preview screen.
There is no firefighter hat in the accessory workshop.
D) FABRIC DESIGN WORKSHOP
E) COLOR WORKSHOP: Shoelaces can not be individually colored in the color
workshop. The boot shoelaces will always become the same color as the shoe.
F) DRESSING ROOM:
G) RUNWAY: Barbie will always have the same hairstyle on the runway and in
the dressing room regardless of the theme of her outfit.
H) CLOSET: Please note that the entire closet is organized by theme. The
display window will only reveal the outfits in the theme that is currently
chosen. The reset button in the closet does not bring you back to where you
were after you use the spotlight to reveal all the outfits in the closet.
Leave the closet and return in order to enter outfits in individual theme
categories again.
I) PRINT WORKSHOP: Color printouts from the Epson Stylus II printer have
unintended stripes over the solid color of any garment. Cleaning the print
head will greatly improve the quality of printouts.
J) PRINT PATTERN
K) COLORING BOOK
L) CREATING GARMENTS: Seam sticker adhesive residue on scissors can make
cutting difficult. It is important that an adult clean safety scissors
after each use.
Section 2: INSTALL/UNINSTALL TIPS
---------
Please note that there may be no icon displayed for Barbie Fashion Designer
in your startup menu in Windows 95. A shortcut icon for your desktop can be
created to allow for easy access. Look for this option in your install. The
install does not support more than 8 characters for the directory name,
even in Windows 95.
1. If you have difficulty installing on a computer with a Diamond Speedstar
Pro Video
card under Windows 3.1 or 3.11, please change your video driver to
Microsoft's(R) SuperVGA 640X480X256 color video driver. Check with the
manufacturer or your systems vendor for updated drivers.
2. Once you have installed BARBIE FASHION DESIGNER, make sure you uninstall
it before installing it again on the same system.
3. In Windows 95, the default directory name can only be changed to a name
with 8 characters.
Section 2: SYSTEM PERFORMANCE TIPS
---------
These tips are designed to improve your overall system performance.
A.) IMPROVE DISK ACCESS PERFORMANCE
With MS-DOS 5.0 or older, you'll need to use a separate utility for disk
optimization. If you're using MS-DOS 6.0 or newer, use the following steps
to defragment and optimize your disk:
1. Exit Windows. At the C:\ prompt, type "defrag C: /f" and press ENTER.
This process will take a few minutes.
2. Restart Windows and run the program.
B.) INCREASE OR ADD SMARTDRIVE CACHE
Change the SMARTDrive cache size to make more memory available. If you have
more than 8 MB of RAM, skip this process.
1. Go to the Program Manager.
2. Select Run from the File menu.
3. At the command box, type "sysedit" and click OK.
4. The Sysedit window will appear. Click on the Autoexec.bat window to
bring it to the front.
5. Locate the line that shows smartdrv.exe and type in the appropriate size.
If you have 8 MB of RAM, add 1024 1024. Your SMARTDrive setting should
look like this: smartdrv.exe 1024 1024 (you have typed in 1024 1024).
Note: Leave any other options on the smartdrv.exe line as they are set.
For example:
(before) smartdrv.exe /q (after) smartdrv.exe 1024 1024 /q
6. If you've made changes, select Save from the File menu. 7. Select Exit
from the File menu.
8. Exit Windows and restart the computer.
C.) SET UP VIRTUAL MEMORY
(Note: If you are running any disk-compression software, refer to that
software's manual or call the software manufacturer for assistance in
setting up a permanent swap file.)
1. Run Defrag as described above in Section 4-A.
2. Double-click the Control Panel icon in the Main group.
3. Double-click the 386 Enhanced icon in the Control Panel group.
4. Click the Virtual Memory button on the right side.
5. Make sure the current setting for Size is set to at least 6000 KB if you
have 8 MB of RAM. Also make sure Type is set to Permanent. If these
settings are not currently set, click the Change button.
6. Under New Settings, make sure the Type is Permanent and the Size is set
according to #5 above. The bigger the swap file size, the better
performance you will have. We recommend setting the size to at least 8000
KB (but not more than 16000 KB). This will improve your overall system
performance.
7. Click OK. Follow the prompt to restart Windows.
D.) INCREASE THE NUMBER OF FILE HANDLES
Change the number of file handles available to DOS.
1. Go to the Program Manager.
2. Select Run from the File menu.
3. At the command box, type "sysedit" and click OK.
4. The Sysedit window will appear. Click on the Config.sys window to
bring it to the front.
5. Locate the line that shows "files=" and change the number of files to
80. The line should now read:
files=80
6. If you've made changes, select Save from the File menu.
7. Select Exit from the File menu.
8. Exit Windows and restart the computer.

Hey for information on how to get games like this one going on newer computers, check the link in the video description. Tho with that said, it's not easy to do if you're not technically inclined.
Where is the fabric with the Barbie trademark "B" design? 😮
Anyone knows what's the name of the fabric used?
How did you manage to get it running? On modern Systems it does not start
I used virtual machine software to get the game to work. It's one of the only ways to play the game again unfortunately and it requires some technical knowledge. Details can be found on my website in the video description.
In this case, I used virtual machine software PCem to emulate a Windows 98 SE computer.
This is helpful, i will try to make it work, thank you ver much! :)

How the crap was this chosen?
you have to look at the bigger picture. it left a cultural impact because it forced video game companies to start marketing toward girls as well. it was enormously profitable (according to Wikipedia it sold more copies than Quake or Doom upon release...i'm sure part of that was due to Mattel's standing but still). And it embodies one of the principles of play that both the Video Game and Toy Hall of Fame emphasize...which is the role of creativity in play that develops a child's brain
