I am delighted to hear this news. I feel like supporting AI writing, especially without need to attribute that work was done by AI, is really defeating to those of us who work so hard on the craft. While I believe. Creating a novel (or other genre of writing) is very different from actually writing a novel (in my opinion). So....I'm thrilled with the idea of the Order. Unfortunately, not so happy that Discord is the primary platform. I don't do well with that and am not interested in being involved there. It's also too late this year for me to participate. I will follow this channel in hopes that next year other platforms will be available. I am all for celebrating human writers and the craft of writing. Thank you for taking this new path.
My sister did nanowrimo for the first time last year and she said it reminded her how much she really enjoyed writing...I started thinking I should try this year. Your video is very encouraging...
The whole scandal that came out last year derailed my NaNoWriMo pretty significantly and I was very much on the fence about whether I would ever come back. The allegations themselves were bad enough but the official response was pitiful. I actually reread their post about it when writing this comment and there was absolutely no acknowledgement of any wrongdoing on NaNoWriMo's behalf. It's obvious the decision makers didn't take this scandal very seriously and the AI announcement confirms that. An organisation that was aware they had made mistakes and needed to win back support from the community wouldn't have taken a deeply controversial stance for the sake of a sponsor. Very happy to see an alternative.
I find that that has been the primary issue - the response of those involved in the event; whether it be public statements or actually staying in contact with MLs. It certainly is clear that they are on their own path and don't show much care for participants or MLs these days, so that, plus the concern of the scandal already had me on the edge and the AI statement was really the final nail in the coffin. I think that's how it was for many! Hope to see you on the server in the weeks ahead :)
I’m so excited that this popped up on my UA-cam feed! I’ve been trying to write a novel but struggling to make progress, hopefully this is the push I need ❤
@@hannahkennelly6961 absolutely, and I am very much an advocate of that. I use it every day for scheduling and other mundane tasks and it is a huge help to give me back time to work on my creative projects. It should however never be accepted as a replacement for creativity, especially when it involves the non consensual use of author and artist works for training.
This looks interesting. I’ve never written outside a couple college creative writing courses, but I do have a lot of ideas which I have been wanting to try writing may give this a go.
I haven’t been “in touch” with NaNo in a few years, but… hearing about the AI integration is a disappointment. Thanks for bringing something new to the fore supporting creators once more. I hope it takes off!
Hey :) You are correct, at this time Stygian does not have an imprint for younger readers. That being said you can absolutely participate in the challenges!
Hi, Holly. A few years ago, I joined a workshop which was about writing short stories, not entire novels. The instructor, who was a retired French Literature teacher from a local Quebec CEGEP, gave us students great tools for enhancing our own creativity, in order to specifically write short stories. I think the same principles she taught us apply to writing popular music songs, not for composing drawn out complex classical music. I mostly thought of night-time spooky short stories. The workshop was a lot of fun. At any rate, there was no AI contribution at all. We were just 6 people exchanging ideas for short stories. BTW, have you ever spent the night in a real cemetery? Thank you, Holly.
Hello! That sounds like a great little workshop. Short stories can be really tough (for me I'm very much a 300-page-novel type person by default haha) so that's a valuable creative skill to teach. I'm glad you enjoyed the process. :) I have not spent the whole night in a cemetery but I to tend to stay until they kick me out haha 💀
@@HollyRhiannonWrites Ha ha ha! I live near the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, which as you no doubt know is the largest in Canada. A few days ago, I went to visit my mother's grave. It is quite a long walk to get there from the cemetery's entrance. I had lost my previous map of this place, so I first went to the administration office to get a new one. I then walked from there to where my mother is resting. Hers is actually a family plot. She is there with her parents, ie. my grandparents and a few other people from my maternal side of the family. I spent some time there amongst the peace and tranquility of the swaying trees. At one point I thought : "This lot is so far from the main entrance, that perhaps I could actually sleep here overnight and then casually walk back out tomorrow morning. Plus it is still early autumn, so the night will not be overly cold." I ended up not doing this, though. I did not want to be woken up and embarrassed by some security guard. LOL. Perhaps this should be set at a different time rather than compete with NANOWriMo? Perhaps January or February? I'm thinking so that you become known you're out there.
Yes… January and February are much better months for intense writing… November is hard to do when there’s a big travel/cooking holiday in it or you want to spend the last of fall outdoors.
The #1 goal this year was to provide an alternate option for those of us who spend our year planning for November. Personally, I plot out my content and take time off of other projects months in advance, so having the rug pulled out from under me only a couple months in advance left a gaping hole, and for many they had this exact same experience. So far there has been more than enough interest so I don't see running in the same month being much of an issue, but depending on how feedback goes we'll see what we want to plan for in the next year! Thank you for weighing in :)
@@labcat647 This is pretty dependent on location I think - here in Canada, November is an empty, cold month, falling between the busyness of Thanksgiving/Hallowe'en in October, and then winter holidays in December.
