    I remember seeing the now classic 'All I Had (I Gave)' music video back in the day, and I went out and got the self titled 'Crowbar' album shortly thereafter, and I've been a fan ever since... I got to speak to Kirk himself after a Napalm Death/Crowbar concert in Aarhus, Denmark back in 1996, and although it was only for a couple of minutes, the dude made a lasting impression on me. I think you would be hard pressed to find an more genuine, heartfelt and down to earth dude than Kirk, besides the fact that he is also one of the best riff-masters and songwriters out there. Hail Kirk, Hail Crowbar! 🤘🤘

      Necrotic Nick- I saw that video on Beavis & Butthead forever ago but I honestly didn't get their stuff (starting with the S/T album) until years later when I saw them on a CD rack and was like "Oh shit... that's that band from Beavis & Butthead" lol. I've had a few run ins with Kirk and that is one solid dude. Just a cool demeaner and you can tell he loves his fans. In terms of rifflords out there we couldn't ask for better representation.

    I know I talk more about thrash, classic metal, and first wave black metal (blackened thrash/speed), but doom and sludge are right up there for me in terms of favorite genres of metal due to how much Black Sabbath influenced my life. 🤘🏻🤘🏻

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  4 місяці тому +1

      Necrotic Nick- I think we've talked about this before honestly. Yeah, I honestly think that if you love Black Sabbath at their heaviest it will eventually lead you to sludge. Doom, stoner and sludge worship at the altar of the riff and Iommi is still pretty much the riff god in my mind.

    I love the Louisiana sludge metal scene. The bands there are so heavy yet still sound so blusey. Love Crowbar, Acid Bath, Eyehategod, Down, and Soilent Green. Should check out the other bands you mentioned.

      Necrotic Nick- Same here. This scene is large in part the reason I got into sludge metal in general. It's as heavy as it is diverse as I think all these bands bring something different to the table.

    Sonic Excess is good but Crowbar's Odd Fellows Rest is a f***ing MASTERPIECE!! that era (Along with Equilibrium) is when That band was working with really magical chemistry what with Jimmy Bower & Sammy Duet-EHG, Acid Bath respectively in the band.

    Oh, and their merch is fantastic. High quality and sick in all the best ways. All up on their bandcamp page.

    Sonic Excess in its Purest Form is my top Crowbar album as well. I love the band photo inside the cover too. Just a gang of thicc boys covered in tats haha. Counting Daze and To Build a Mountain so gd good man. 🤘 odd fellows rest and lifesblood for the downtrodden makes my top 3 Crowbar albums.

      Eyehategod Take As Needed for Pain, Dopesick and self titled my top 3 for EHG. Bowers guitar riffing IS sludge incarnate. Like heavily drunken blues doom. Perfection. I am so glad we got their self title before Joey passed. And glad Jimmy did Superjoint Ritual, a band rarely mentioned in alot of metal circles but SJRs first two albums are just incredible and unique.

    • @jasonscholl2945
      @jasonscholl2945 4 місяці тому +1

      Down....I need say nothing. Down is superb. All albums all killer no filler. I hear elements of ozzys sabbath vocals in Phil, I hear bonhams Zeppelin drums in Bower, we get the juxtaposition of Kirk's doomed sludge and Peppers bluesy sludge....

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  4 місяці тому +1

      Necrotic Nick- Well, I'm glad you got to check it out at least. This one was a lot of fun to do just because I have such a strong connection to some of these albums. Sonic Excess is the GOAT of Crowbar albums and Dopesick was my first exposure to Eyehategod so it'll always be special to me but all those early albums are some of the most visceral music to ever come out of NOLA. I thought about including both Superjoint Ritual and Exhorder but I wanted to keep it more along the lines of sludge metal. Down's NOLA might be one of the best albums ever done by a supergroup in my opinion. I love every track on that album. There might not be a finer collection of catchy riffs in the entire NOLA scene.

    I was hoping to see a deleted symphony on here!! One of my favorites records ever. SG are recording a new album FINALLY. Tommy recorded drums a few weeks ago.
    haarp - the filth is one I dig a ton. Highly recommended. The follow up was damn good too. Sucks they aren’t around anymore.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  4 місяці тому

      Necrotic Nick- While I started with "Sewn Mouth Secrets" I still tend to gravitate to "A Deleted Symphony for the Beaten Down" more. That album just flat out rips and really expands on that grind colliding with sludge metal thing they do so well. I was already stoked to see them at MDF but that's fucking awesome that they're recording a new album finally. I'm not familiar with HAARP so I'll have to check them out at some point.

      @@thrallsofmetal I think you’ll be pleasantly disgusted with haarp. Eager to hear your thoughts once you do, man!
      I actually blind bought deleted symphony on cd at a local record shop back in ‘03 solely based on the artwork. I had no idea who they were whatsoever haha. SMS rips too! Saw SG at a pool hall touring confrontation and I got to talk to Ben and tell him how much of an impact his shits had. Specifically that Paralysis album. Such a sick record. Definitely needs a rerelease and more recognition. Really laid back guy. I’d love to see them in Fargo again.

      Necrotic Nick- One of my favorite things that came out of the entire sludge metal scene period. I love that album so damn much and Pagan Terrorism Tactics but not as much as the debut. Crowbar always brings the riffs. I just got back from seeing them in Philly for the Decibel Metal & Beer Fest and they absolutely crushed on day one.
