The world's largest indoor waterpark
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 лип 2015
- tomscott.com - / tomscott - The biggest uninterrupted indoor space on the planet, Tropical Islands Resort ( www.tropical-islands.de/ ), sits on an old airfield in Germany. How on earth could anyone afford to build something that big... and then use it as a waterpark? Well, the story's a bit more complicated than that.
(And full disclosure: this isn't a sponsored video, no money's changed hands, but Tropical Islands were happy to let me in free and give me a ride up on their balloon. I'm grateful to all the team there for a fantastic day!)
That really is the deepest question that we all must ask ourselves: What do you do with a disused airship hangar?
Sweet "T" that question has been troubling me for years, now that it's been answered, I have a new question, Where do I get a disused airship hangar?
Daniel Sultana
Step 1: Build an airship hangar.
Step 2: Never use it.
Tobias Quintano You sir have a point, but then again so does a toothpick!!!
Sweet "T" Well I guess youll have to become an airship-themed supervillain. Really sucks because your list of weaknesses is going to be long.
Sweet "T" Tillamook, OR turned theirs into an Air Museum: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tillamook_Air_Museum
It's the largest _wooden_ clear-span structure in the world.
A few years ago a German horror-movie shot some scenes there.
They used (too much) movie-blood without permission, and dyed part of the sand red.
They had to bring in several dump-trucks full of special sand to replace it, which is one of the most expensive production-mishaps in German movie history.
What a random but none the less interesting information! thanks
@@Samstagnachmittag I learned it about a year back, looking for a location for a student-project, and they declined it citing "Past experiences".
I guess that means they no longer permit productions in there after that mishap.

With every video uploaded, the number of places in the world I want to visit keeps increasing...
***** I have been there too, but it's not really that great of an amusement park...
sure there are some slides, but you have to pay extra for them, they are not part of the entry ticket price. (5€ extra for the 4 slides). If you're planning on just chilling by the 'ocean' like you would on a real tropical island, then this is the right choice for you.
I went with a couple of friends looking for great fun, but we were severely disappointed by the boring atmosphere in there...
Honestly, it's a pretty cool place, but not nearly enough to justify a trip to Germany (assuming you're not in a neighboring country). It makes for a nice day trip if you're already here, though.
If you're interested the the amusement park and water slides part of this, go to kalahari in Sandusky ohio, however if you're looking for a relaxing indoor beach this is the place for you
Been there. It isn't that great.
@@khosrow kalahari, or the waterpark from the video?
Went to the Tropical Island 2 years ago and it is VERY recommendable. After some hours inside, you do no see the roof anymore and it feels like Thailand. Warm, humid, LOTS of entertainment. We`ll go there again!
It's funny, I actually live in Thailand, but after seeing this video, I want to spend time in this place :D
I've been there and it felt like being stuck in a greenhouse. Not a nice place to be, if you ask me. Bit of a curiosity, sure, but I wouldn't wanna spend my holidays there. Or any time for that matter.

Its so cool when you have already been to a place that was featured in this series. I am lucky that I am a german and that this Waterpark was really close to where i used to live.
Ich war da schon 3 Mal :D
Waren da auch schon zwei mal 👌🏻😁
I was there . It's okay .
But what really had me interested (as a becoming engineer) was this huge self supporting structure. It's baffling when you're standing inside it and look up. Really cool
Reminds me of the movie "The Truman Show" ... so eerie
We need a few of these on Mars; airtight and radiation shielded, of course. At 1/3 gravity you could fly around in there on a pair of nylon + graphite wings. Wheeee!!
@@laikapupkino1767 that Sounds amazing !!
When you're standing on the ground the roof is actually so far away that you get aerial perspective effects when looking at it, meaning that it appears more desaturated and blue than it actually is due to the amount of air you're looking through. It's the same effect with mountains in the distance.
I had been there when there was hope, that those cargo airships would be produced and fly. A friend of mine was an engineer there. It was most impressing...
its more an indoor tropical island than a water park
the name is tropical island xD
There are additional wild water slides and pools outdoors
Hey, it's the guy from "Fichtls Lied"!
@@nadiahapsari3359 I prefer the cursed version
I remember when I went there about ten years ago they played moves like jagger multiple time. Now every time I hear that song I think of the tropical islands
I saw a documentary about it. Alone the amount of effort they put into the gardening is already insane as these are true tropical plants that require a true tropical environment to grow (temperature, air humanity, amount of sun every day), that's why they try to simulate such an environment as closely as possible. They even simulate true rain as it's not enough to just water them from below.
I feel like this is something Phineas and Ferb would build in an afternoon.
If there's ever a zombie apocalypse I call dibs on this place!
Gabby Avery you'd have to remove all the plants, alto they get uv light, watering them would be a challenge, if not a downright waste given the circumstances, you'd also have to empty all the pools because standing water and all that nonsense, i agree that as a giant fairly enclosed space it would have uses in that scenario, but your little paradise at worlds end it would be not.
I may or may not have thought about this before ^^.
Gabby Avery Funnily enough there is a terrible german apocalypse movie in which some people are trapped in there.
+Battusai1984 there's water everywhere
+Gabby Avery i call dibs on your house
+Doppelrutsch Wait, how is the film called? I'd really like to see it!
I got lost there already. It's way bigger than you would expect
If you want to go there, here are a few things to acknowledge:
- There are constantly 26°C+ and the air is very wet so (for me) its hard to sleep in there and if you manage to fall asleep be aware of the flamingos screaming at 4am...
- There are GIANT bugs... EVERYWHERE besides in the water
- The fastest water slide actually hurts to use cause it speeds you up to about 70 km/h (don't quote me on that number but you get very fast)
- You lose track of how much money you spent very easily because you get a bracelet with an id chip for scanning that you did something you have to pay for and you pay at the end...
- I didn't understand how breakfast worked i think you have to pay and then you get knife and fork etc but i didn't actually do it that way I just ate without a knife :)
Wait, is 26° warm? In the summer I am relieved when it drops below 30° and freeze to death at 16°
wow, thanks for these tips, apparently it has a cockroach problem as well
i wish it were 30 degrees where i am now.
Zahlenteufel1 oh pls 26° is good here is easily 30 mostly hangs around at 30 too 26 is so cool
You guys are forgetting that this is in Germany... We only have like 60 days in the year where it's above 25-30°C
My father actually worked at the company owning that airship hangar before it went bankrupt.
s0mar 1 like = 1 respect and i liked
Sad it didn't work out, airships are cool!
zapfanzapfan but this, this is far cooler
Cargolifter had some good concepts. Another company building airships was more conservative and survived the dotcom bust; Zeppelin NT
It was a Zeppelin construction
Watched a german documentary about this. They said that they need to open the upper windows when the sun shines, otherwise it will get too hot inside.
jesus christ, must turn into a sauna or something if they dont open the window
But why would you go there when the sun shines anyway

Fun fact: "Erding" is a waterpark with the most slides Europe and is also in Germany
Actually "Erding" is the city it's located at, but the waterpark itself is called "Therme Erding" or "Galaxy Erding" for the part with the slides...
Welcome to Germany, the #1 Country at recycling. :D
I'd say India tbh
danglav They recycle more in total but less in percentage as India is also the country that throws the most plastic trash into the ocean.
And Denmark literrally buy trash from the UK to fuel 2 Power plants in the Capital.
That's actually upcycling
Well technically Malaysia who bought this building is #1 at recycle / upcycle buildings. Battersea Power Station in London is Malaysia's latest project. Expended to a regeneration project of the whole district call, Nine Elms. That's the same tropical country who is still recycling buildings around the world. We even recycle our Prime Minister, currently the oldest elected leader at 92 years old ;)
I was surfing though these videos and then I come across this one! I've actually been there as a kid! I had no idea it was a repurposed air hanger though!
I was there in 2008 and it was amazing. The combination of tropical remote island, waterpark, theme park, hotel and restaurant is great. Even in winter the temperature was almost too warm and humid for my taste
I'm glad UA-cam showed me this older video.
Maybe I should go back through the older vids in this series and watch through them.
German guy here.
I've been in this waterpark a few years back. Back then, the waterpark itself was already finshed, but the "green area" (in one corner there's pretty much only few animals + trees and other plants as you could see) only was a small path back then with few trees and palms left and right.
The biggest problem with this water park is that it's pretty expensive. I went there with my class in our "last" year (10th grade secondary school), so my parents had to make up for it, but it's really not recommandable if you're not a) pretty wealthy or b) in desparation for some "tropical" (= warm humid air) feeling. So it's never worth going there in summer, only in winter if you really need to but even then normal indoor water parks (there are plenty of them in Germany) are a much better choice, because they are quite a lot bigger (in terms of attractions, pools and their variety), cheaper.
But being inside there is pretty impressive. And the sight when you're on top of the biggest water slide gives a nice overview. :)
i was there 4 days its a nice place and u realy have the feeling to be in a rainforest/tropical island.
U learn much about the world and relax/adventure at the same time.
I payed for the local wood houses. A nice trip which is not to expensive!

A long time ago I was there as a kid and loved it. Funny how I am watching Tom Scot for years now only finding out now that he covered one of my favourite childhood holiday memories a few years ago
I lived in Berlin at the time the project was initiated and then eventually re-conceptualised. There were a few such stories around Berlin concerning gone-wrong investments or excessively crazy projects that got cancelled for bizarre reasons. One that still looms over Berlin is the use of the Tempelhof airport space.
The Tempelhof is nownsuch a cool massive free space I saw on videos.
I've been there with my elementary school class alota years ago and aside from the cockroaches being everywhere at night, it honestly is an amazing feeling that makes me want to go visit an actual tropical island.

Welcome to Germany Tom! We love your Channel!
I was there as a physics student when the company still wanted to build their zeppelin. Looking from the top down to ground the people seemed to be as small as ants. Ant they had weather there and fog and rain. A shame I did not visit it again since it is the tropical islands. Especially because I only live about 200km away from it.
Michael Bernhardt you have got to be kidding me 200km and you didn't go again!??! i can't even visit places like these my whole life
The German government should have saved the Cargolifter airship project. The idea was fantastic. Transporting massive oversized and heavy duty cargo via road is extremely slow, complicated and cost intensive. The cargolifter could have transported those objects via air fast and exactly to the point of destination. There was a great opportunity missed here.
This place should get some of the personal blimps that Tom played with last year. Would be so cool to fly around the dome!

Why was that in my recommendations 4 years later?
This makes me kinda sad. If I had to choose between having a weird and awesome indoor water park like that, Or having airships be popular... I'd rather have airships.
therealquade cool story, are you going to pay for it with a flight that takes like 20 times as long as with a normal airplane? Not forgetting the hard maneuvering with landings and takeoffs during hard winds, instability, cost, space required to storage and additional education needed...
FoodOnCrack Airships are very comfortable to travel on, therefore the purpose of airships wouldn't be transport mostly, but aerial tourism: having the luxury to look down x)
An airship could be filled with loads of interesting features. Restaurants being just one of them. It could have cinema, small waterparks, indoor gardens, bowling alleys, and so forth.
Basically a smaller cruise ship in the air xD
emilnyb might I add, this is exactly what the hindenberg was.
therealquade that and a giant bbq
+Amici You can put literally all of that on a plane. There really isn't much space in an airship, only the tiny cabin.
i remember going there with my family when I was younger. it was fantastic!!
This looks AWESOME
What a pity the original company that owned the building failed and the hanger was never used for airships!
Ikr? This world needs more airships!
@may day because they are awesome! Have you ever seen a Zeppelin flying in the sky? Probably not, because they are very rare. But they are real majestic. With modern technology you could probably build really cool ones which run on solar.
And than fly to england with them and give them all PTSD flashbacks. I love the idea!

Me walking by food to the next Supermarcet to save the enviroment and than there is this huge dome heated during the whole winter to have a tropic climate in february in the middle of somwhere in Germany
"in the *middle* of somewhere in Germany" well technically it's not in the middle of Germany because Berlin is in the east. Yet I think it's still very bad for our environment that this thing heats so much
To make it even better, it uses heat produced by a coal fired power plant right next to it

Yeah, I'm actually old enough to remember all the hoo-hah around the Cargolifter project back in the late 90s.
At the time, it was all glossy brochures and expensive computer animation and lots of hype-y press releases and had the distinct odour of a scam.
I don't think that a cargo-carrying airship would be a viable business model. Freight don't care how it gets there. On the other hand, passengers would be prepared to pay a premium for travelling in style.
Thanks Tom!
