  • The Breaking Bad movie just released on Netflix and because Stan is a huge fan, we’re redecorating the whole set, putting on costumes, and dedicating the episode to Drugs! We talk about our past experiences with drugs, if they can hinder or help an artist and some drug alternatives that you should look at to get those creative juices flowing. A caller asks what abstract artists should study.

It baffles me greatly that not once were the psychedelic visuals even mentioned. Seeing forms, fractals, movement and colors that are indescribable is an astonishing experience for any creative person, even as a theme park ride, and not for creativity enhancing reasons.

I know exactly what you're talking about. After learning form simplifying I would hallucinate chunking things I would look at. Looking at my hand and closing my eyes and seeing it broken down then opening my eyes and seeing it warp and bulge is so entertaining it makes me feel like a kid. Psilocybin. I can never focus and sit down and draw during my experiences though.

Seriously: Stan should read 'The Natural Mind' by Dr. Andrew Weil. Preferably an earlier edition if you can find it. It mostly comes from Weil's Harvard doctoral thesis. It's a very readable, analytical and (no pun intended) sober approach that puts the topic of drugs in a social, cultural and physiological context. It's the most interesting, unbiased and sane take I've ever seen on what drugs actually do, why people take them, how and why problems with them develop, etc.

I have experience with drawing with lot of cannabis, It helped me focus on learning how to draw at command at any place, even being able of drawing while chatting with people at the same time without loosing the ideas that would come out, but I made me horrible bad at finishing up work.
It did help me understand much better when I studied anatomy or perspective, or color, but Had to plan ahead how to continue a drawing post-high. Because many times I couln't see how to finish an idea started while high.
I like it, but you must use it responsible. Now I draw a lot without smoking, I can start drawing without doubts. But the feeling of having instant ideas at fast pace, wich Smoking gave that feeling, becomes really addictive, and its so hard to come out of that mindset.
I try to stay away of doing that unless I'm to stress or distracted that I need to smoke to fucus. But I'm glad that you can come out from that. But is hard.

    • @TheCSJones
      @TheCSJones 2 роки тому

Interesting. I have ADHD and smoking it helps me calm down and focus on drawing when I don't mix it with my meds, but when I do it becomes a double negative, I really start feeling the amphetamine effect, and I become hyperactive with no attention span.

I feel like Stan doesn't have nearly as much life experience and nuance to bring to the table and sometimes comes off as a bit cocky and closed-minded. i have my vision of Abstract Painting, may be i am wrong, but this is my meaning to it.
one can't start his life to become an abstract artist. keep drawing in a style that is comfortable, and over years you end up in a style that is yours, and that is abstract art.

Dreamy drawing in-the-zone sounds like auto pilot, where your brain isn't consciously focused on what your drawing exactly, but what feels "right" at the moment. Whereas the other in-the-zone sounds like being confident and conscious of where this goes and how this should be towards what you want-ish. One's subconscious trance feeling, and the other is conscious and deliberately aware feeling. ...maybe.

Picasso started off as an impressionistic painter and evolved into his abstract state. Learning to basics of drawing will teach you to know what rules to break. Abstract art could be about the design aspects of usage of color, tension between objects or the emotion it evokes from the viewer. It represents a view of reality without the limits of representation of the recognizable.

I know one possible study for abstract art, and that is geometry for sure. How much Sir Roger Penrose, Benoit Mandelbrot and other great mathematicians contributed to our modern cultural graphical library just can't be overestimated.

Sugar isn't a drug. Just because something has addictive-like effects doesn't make it a drug.
And sugar is not truly addictive like drugs are. There is no withdrawal if you quit sugar.

      Why is sugar so addicting?
The link between sugar and addictive behavior is tied to the fact that, when we eat sugar, opioids and dopamine are released. ... When a certain behavior causes an excess release of dopamine, you feel a pleasurable “high” that you are inclined to re-experience, and so repeat the behavior.Oct 10, 2016
How does sugar affect the body?
When you eat excess sugar, the extra insulin in your bloodstream can affect your arteries all over your body. It causes their walls to get inflamed, grow thicker than normal and more stiff, this stresses your heart and damages it over time. This can lead to heart disease, like heart failure, heart attacks, and strokes.
When we digest sugar, enzymes in the small intestine break it down into glucose. ... If your body stops producing any or enough insulin, or if your cells become resistant to it, this can result in diabetes, leaving your blood-sugar levels to rise to dangerous levels.Feb 17, 2016

The only reason it's not a "drug" because the people feeding it to you call it food. Everything's a drug, foods have drugs in them, therefore naming a drug a food restricts it from being a drug. Sugars not addictive? stop eating it for two weeks boss.
Our culture puts in as much sugar as possible into everything.. why? .. because they like drugs in their food that makes people crave their food. Good for business.

@@TwDjLsT I have stopped eating sugar for more than two weeks. It's not difficult, because it's not a drug.
"Everything's a drug" is just your special way of admitting that you don't know what a drug is. There is no withdrawal from sugar, it's not a drug.
The only reason anyone calls sugar a drug is so that they feel better about their lack of self-discipline. Because if it's not a drug, that means the only reason they don't quit eating it is because they don't care enough.
Sugar does not have stimulant or narcotic effects. Sugar rushes are a myth.

Cold showers are a great alternative. You begin by hating it, but you are more willing to do uncomfortable things after the fact because you pushed yourself to do something that's already uncomfortable. Then from there you relish in the fact you were able to do something out of your comfort zone making you feel better and more willing to do things that make you uncomfortable. It's kinda like self discipline becoming productivity then becoming content in ones self.

I really appreciated Marshalls point of view; about the different types of drug use/users. I personally have an interest in both art and drugs (psychopharmacology) and plan on continuing my education into medicine and psychopharmacology specifically. This doesn't mean I always use drugs, and more often than not, have more knowledge on a drug, than I have experience with said drug. I do think knowledge is better than ignorance and we should teach harm reduction, rather than vilification (of the drugs) and demonization (of the users) which has negative effects for society as a whole. Stan had a very biased opinion and seemed to just flat-out, demonize drugs (other than caffeine). BUT the discussion between you two, was very interesting to hear unfold. I hope one day Stan can share a similar view to Marshalls, I respect his opinion but I think he could benefit greatly from learning/reading about drugs/addiction (no need to experiment haha). Please keep having interesting (debate-like) talks like this and I wish you both the best!

There are definitely risks involved in taking psychedelics , but I think if you've got a good head on your shoulders and don't suffer from severe mental health issues or anxiety, there are without a doubt a plethora of benefits to be had.

I feel like if you guys are gonna talk about art and Drugs. You should have maybe brought up good examples of artist who do use drugs for the visionary aspect of them. For example Alex Grey. I feel like he’s one of the most influential artists in the world still alive and yea many paintings were inspired by his incredibly spiritual visionary trips. Hmmm I think I just would have liked to hear you guys talk about the ‘’spiritually aspect looking deep within to find truth and that kind of stuff’ . Hope I’m not sounding rude, and this makes sense haha cannabis too for me can have a profound effect on the deeper meaning behind some of my work in great ways.

The nice thing about exercise is that it gets easier with time. The more you do it the less it takes out of you and yet the more you can do. For instance, running a mile on the first day of training will leave you tired for the entire day, but running 6 miles after several months of training will only leave you tired for a few hours.
