To me "Dream no more" is the baddest, darkest, evilest of the modern ones
It's hella BADASS but probably not darker than this... I don't know which one I prefer tbh!

Dream No More is modern heavy but this is something different
It is different and should be looked at in different way. Like last bridge in "Allnightmare long" where Lars plays double bass. It sounds do evil... Fast, deep and realy evil. I gues i want to say there are different "evil" and "dark", and while being different, would hit the same kind od energy.

I'd say so. The main riff is one of their most melodically complex riffs, and it still confuses me what the root note is supposed to be. Is it E minor/standard or is it B minor/standard? The only other time a riff was this melodically busy and intriguing in its complexity is The Thing That Should Not Be (strangely, both being in pretty the same tempo).

It's basically E minor with some added chromatic notes to give it a darker sound. Probably you can say it's E Locrian too, which is a really dark sounding mode. Most of the Metallica songs fit this style. Indeed it's a really complex melody.

I agree. People were writing this song off, but the chords are actually pretty interesting when you consider the bass note.

I think All Nightmare Long is up there, with the intro, the tremolo picked verse riff, outro, even maybe the one right after the first chorus.

Inamorata is the most darkest in my opinion. Very doom. Very deep. The entire two parts riff is outstanding heavy as f.
Not sure if it's more dark than this one... However, Inamorata is my favorite song off the album and one of my favorite Metallica tunes anywayz!

While this riff was mean too, I'd argue the riffing around the midpoint of You Must Burn was even darker. I imagine you'll know what I'm talking about as well.
