Dang I used to know how to make these by heart years ago, one of my favorite ever origami designs as I love bats. Feels good coming back to make it again.
Kami is basic origami paper usually made in Japan. You can get it at most craft and art stores or online. The brand that I like to use is Aitoh, but Yasutomo is just as good. The sheet of kami that I'm using in this video is a 10-inch square.
Actually, freakin' weird is a compliment, thanks. If you were to call me "ordinary,'' now that would be an insult. I really don't think I should get a girlfriend since I've been married longer than you've been alive. I'll get some "decent" shirts when you learn how to sing and how to spell... in other words, I'm stuck with my tie-dyes forever.
@chiueve BARF stands for Bay Area Rapid Folders which is the San Francisco origami group. Most of the models that I have designed have been published in the Bay Area Rapid Folders Newsletter, a quarterly newsletter that I produced for 15 years. I stopped doing the BARF Newsletter to give me time to make these videos. So, really my UA-cam channel grew out of BARF!
@@nickkuuiii4169 Same, one of the best models by Mr.Shafer. When you learn it and can put your own artistic spin to make the wings curve more and wings sharper is so much fun and cool to show people! Everyone is always amazed when I make this bat, then it flaps. Jaws drop every time! ALSO IT HAS LITTLE TINY FEET! Thanks Mr. Shafer!
So far this is the best bat fold i can find. And if you sculpt the face just right, you can make it look like a Vampire Bat which is one of my favorite bats right next to the Flying Fox.
Mine flaps amazingly! superb! and your last joke in the video actually came true! I was messing around with the flapping bird and I re-arranged the layers and got a flapping dragon! I'll see if I can make a tutorial for it! :D
Thank's Jeremy it's one of the best origami bat pattern I ever seen! Is seems to be difficult but it's simple. I can give you some tricks. First it's important to mastered the traditional crane. If you don't mastered this don't try the bat. Second there are a lot of creases than that paper is really important. I have training me on paper for gift. Choose your paper not to thick because the creases will be impossible. When you have made your training, choose a thin origami paper of very good quality (origami paper is specially suited for creasing). Third follow the extraordinary tuto of Jeremy step by step 1: the base, 2 the head, 3 the wings, 4 the uropatagum and legs and than the finition with the flapping uropatagium. If you follow this it will be easier, happy crease.
It's kami which is origami paper specially made for origami, usually colored on one side and white on the other. You can get it online by searching for 'origami paper, or at your local craft store or art store. The paper I used is 10-inches by 10-inches.
I remember back at first grade where all my classmates always asked me to make them origami, well, that was 6 years ago,I'm in highschool, and I'm still the origami master XD
@Andreorigamilover It's the same mechanism as the Flapping Bird. So you need to master that first. If it's not flapping then you need to compare it with the Flapping Bird and see why the Flapping bird flaps and your bat doesn't. Good luck!
@yauboy123 Make sure you can fold the traditional flapping bird: I'm sure there are flapping bird tutorials here on youtube (if not tell me and I'll make one -- I'd call the flapping bird the the #1origami model of all time). The action mechanism to this bat is exactly like the flapping bird!
This is such a good idea for Halloween! Maybe I'll hand out one of these along with some candy to each visitor that comes over or something. Yeah! (I remember being more interested in finding little cheap toys or other little goodies instead of just candy. Once the candy's all gone, what fun are you left with?)
I don't see how to just leave a comment on my own.. so I have to tag it on here.. but.. man.. I almost tossed my cookies at the start.. that was SICK.. But I'm glad I stuck around.. because that is THE COOLEST Bat thing EVER! WOW! I have never done origami before but my 7 year old son wanted me to look up how to make a "paper bat" and found this.. WOW! I'm gonna give it a try! Thanks for making this!
So cool and cute! I just made this with a student (7th grade) and it it worked for both of us! Thanks so much for putting this up. The fluttery flapping is just like the big brown bats around here! If only this one would eat mosquitoes...
i made my bat with some publicity paper i found in my mail box, the paper was very thick to start with so i had to use pliers at some points to fold it again over and over but i made a quite decent bat, the problem is that it is not flapping at all,. i can't make flapping birds either no matter what i use and no matter how thoroughly i follow the instructions. i think there is a curse , a sort of origami curse that only strikes some origami makers, i refer to it as the non flapping origami curse or NFOC , it has been following me for about 10 years now , if anyone has any idea of a spell to reverse this curse, i would be most grateful ! seriously , awesome bat you made and the video is very clear and easy to understand . thank you for posting it .
I did it but I used regular paper. I actually do suggest origami paper on this one because of the smaller folds. Regular paper makes tiny rips on the smaller folds, and I couldn't get the detailing as good as I wanted to. So, use origami paper ! Also, I wanted to point out that this is an excellent vid ! Verry clear, and good instructions. Thanks for posting this !
@John831K It's the same mechanism as the Flapping Bird. So you need to master that first. If it's not flapping then you need to compare it with the Flapping Bird and see why the Flapping Bird flaps and your bat doesn't. Good luck!

This is easily one of your most artistic and mechanically brilliant creations: I think I can make it but I'll have to stop & start your video over & over
I just want to thank you, for a half of year I keep making those and everyone is "stolen" as soon as it is finished. great tutorial and great bat. thanx again

Good point, I hadn't thought of that, but I think you'll agree the tail-pulling action is cooler.

Tips on how to make the bat flap:
1. Try to loosen up the layers beside the wings, but perform with extreme caution because the paper could rip.
2. Don’t use foil or construction paper, use kami paper (or Daiso paper).
3. Train and practice the bat a few times until it flies off your hands (not really XD)
4. Put the bat to sleep.
5. Fold the model again while experimenting with paper types, just don’t use the papers I talked about at the second tip

My starburst bat couldnt flap is the sad part..
