all safes follow that same construction pattern. they sell you a big heady door that looks impressive but the sides are the weakest part.
yeah go pay $3500 for a safe, you'll see the diff.

For truly serious security expect to spend several thousand $. You want a UL listed safe with a 'TLTR 30x6' rated safe. This means it's HIGHLY power tool and blow torch resistant on ALL SIDES and will come with all the extra security bells and whistles like a drill proof hard plate and automatic relocking system in front of a high quality lock. The size of the safe will be the next cost determining factor. Again, the smallest TLTR30x6 rated safe prolly gonna run 7,000$....

When I saw you guys sticking the crowbars into the side of the safe, I was imagining myself a few years ago, after my parents got married, I was LITERALLY prying the mini safe holding the rings open with a metal fork. It took me 2 hours and about a week in space to separate the time it took. Also, I was prying it open AFTER the wedding.

I made my own safe, out of 1" steel plate door and a 16mm steel walls with 4" of real MPA55 concrete, where a sledge just bounces off and does nothing. The lock has a thick steel body that cannot be bent over or smashed, and it uses a optical key lock that cannot be picked or bypassed. It also as a time lock that requires authorization else even if you stole the key it will still not open.
There comes a point when you have such a great and impenetrable safe that it becomes worth the effort for the bad guy to just force you to open it at gunpoint....

Symbolic life message/lesson: Just because the hatch/door was used to put the valuables in the safe, that doesn't mean that that's the best/easiest way to break into the safe to get what you want/need. Don't be so narrow-minded, be smarter and break into the safe from the side. It is much more effortless, quicker and easier.

You can get into pretty much anything with a grinder and time. A home safe isn't designed to stand up against it, its meant to make it more difficult for a criminal to simply break a window grab your valuables and run before any kind of response team shows up. The other part of what makes a safe secure is not the safe itself, but the fact that its hidden somewhere, so it will also take the criminal time to find the safe and if its in a weird location and bolted to a wall, it will also make it awkward for them to try and force their way in.
If you do some research you will find out that the typical home robbery is no longer than 10 minutes, which is not a lot of time to locate the safe and cut it open with a grinder, also the grinder makes a ton of noise, which can make neighbors suspicious if its late at night and they know your not home.

Most off the shelf safes are made of thin sheet metal, easy to break or cut through. Making the walls thicker just makes it take longer to cut but any safe can be broken eventually.
I thought this was a expensive safe though ?.

Well, for one, no safe is impervious. Anybody that's determined to get into it, will eventually get into it. The question is how long is somebody willing to sit there and try to open it and risk getting caught. If anything, a safe is a deterrent. The harder it is to open and the things inside are to access, the less likely they are to be taken.
Two, the chances of someone coming into a house with a heavy duty cutting tool like that are HIGHLY unlikely, unless someone knows that there is a safe in the house, and they know for a fact that there is something worth some value in it. At that point, you want to question the people you've let in your house and who's seen your safe and what's in it. This is why you put it out of sight (like, in a corner in a closet).
And, third, if you anchor your safe to the floor, no one can knock it over and pry it open (easily, at least). Especially if you put it up against a wall or in a corner.
those type of safes are really meant for fire protection not burglary protection. the ones that are meant for both are a lot heavier and also a lot more expensive. generally burglary safes have 1/4 inch or so walls and would of been far more of a challenge. You likely would of needed the gas powered cutoff saw for getting through the outer walls.

This is clearly meant to be buried in a wall or put in a closet so you can't access the sides easily.
Wilson Lim I'm not saying that it isn't a terrible safe. I'm just saying that the methods that the safe manufacturers tested the safe at (If at all, or in more likelyhood they just put some words on the sticker) were probably not the conditions that they had in the back yard.
Full access to all 4 sides of the safe, and the ability to get prybar in and full leverage on? Nobody has a safe in those conditions. At least not anyone who would have enough smarts to put anything worth anything in said safe. Just putting it in a closet with limited space to 'work' in will make the security of said safe 10x better.
You could cut a "window" in the door
First, this isn't a *safe* by any standard, despite the common parlance. At best, it is a Residential Security Container. But even by those standards, it is a bottom-end example.
That said, an angle grinder will open virtually all RSC's quite easily. They are designed, at most, to prevent a quick smash and grab by a typical meth-head burglar and to keep out curious kids. Nothing more.
Even high end true *safes* are only rated for minutes against a trained and properly equipped attack.
Finally, gypsum board is the common fire resistant material used in most RSC's. Safes typically use concrete.
