A healthy version of squatters rights would have been.... allowing the housing market to correct in 2008...
Stealing isnt right, but tbh, everyone attacking the squatters is part of the problem as well, and until everyone gets reasonable access to housing, nobody should have it. Simple as.

@@tandava-089 You say rich, but what about the hard working people who put their entire life savings into owning a home (who aren't rich btw), only for squatters to invade and ruin their lives? These homeowners don't have the money to pay for housing for someone else and themselves (some with families), and utilities for two places too.

In many countries that's the case. No right to self-defense, harming a thief is more likely to attract police than the act of breaking and entering or theft. In fact reporting anything stolen will almost unequivocally result in no action from police. This is true in Australia.

Solution to getting squatters out: 1. Friend knocks on door to distract 2. You break in from a window, hide in a closet, and then call the police to let them know intruders are in your house 3. When the police arrive, you come out of the closet and then claim that the squatters aren't squatter but are intruders that just broke into your house 4. Show your driver's licence and the police will arrest the squatters, who are obligated to prove they are squatters and not intruders 5. Problem solved because the police will side with whoever is in possession of the property

I also don't understand squatters rights. I thought in America, you can shoot trespassers. So if you break into your home and start shooting them, will the law be on your side? I don't live in America and this is a wild and wrong suggestion. I'm just saying it doesn't make sense, all of it.

They have to commit at least two crimes, Trespassing and Breaking and Entering, in order to even begin to squat. What is the legal justification for allowing that?

Trespassing is a very complicated crime, imagine that the land you are living in right now was owned by man without children, spouse or family, and when he died he didn't had a will. Does that mean that you are trespassing? Even if you buy the house from someone, paid property taxes and lived all your life in that house? Squatters rights is citizen rights, since you can't be 100% sure that the land you own is actually yours. Paperwork gets missing all the time as well as government archives, the only real option to know that you actually own that place is by paying property taxes.
And where is the evidence of such crime ?

@@sn5301679Actually these laws came from good intentions. They were made so owners couldn’t just toss out renters at will.
Say your lease was $1000/mo and upon your lease expiring your landlord raised your rent to $2000/mo and forced to either pay up or be thrown out asap with your family.
You would have some breathing room to find a place before being kicked out.
Anyways eventually bad people realize that this could be exploited.
This video is misleading. I’m a law student and as have been learning about this. You only get squatters rights if the property is abandoned for a very long time. The purpose of it is to ensure that rich people don’t just buy up some property and abandon it/hog it from themselves without making improvements to it. It’s called adverse protection.

It's legal. It's also legal to enter the home when their gone from the home, tresspass them, and if they continue to force there way into the home you can use the castle doctrine and use a firearm if there threatening your safety. This will cause them to call the cops, and the cops aren't allowed to enter the home if your the homeowner unless there's a lease/tenant agreement. Without that they can't help you and it's now a civil issues that must be dealt in court, so they can receive there stuff back if they want to fight it.
I'd rather get a case for self defense than let them try and take the home.

A friend of mine was telling me about her island & how some people build vacation homes, but are barely there & squatters break in & live in these homes if they know you’re barely there. She also said if you buy land & don’t build a house right away, they will start building a house on your property!

Squatter's rights have to end. America can't be the "land of the free" and violate the property rights of Americans if they allow squatters at all. Florida did a good move recently in the right direction by eliminating these "squatter's rights" laws.

it's baffling, in my country you have to present a document that shows you do live in that address ( for example renting contract or house document ) in order to change your address in your driving licence. how come you can change your address on your driving licence just like that ????!!!!!!

@@rebeccadima2660 even HOA makes you do that in most places, you’ll be fined for letting weeds grow all over your front lawn and not having a proper fence in the backyard. If you don’t take care of it, it attracts bugs, termites, etc and devalues the surrounding property. It also prevents rich people from buying up hoarding a bunch of property for themselves.

The easiest way to get rid of squatters is to move in and outsquat them. You cant be removed if you have a valid lease or rent agreement.

Im from Norway and i can testify that if i came home from holiday etc and someone had broken into my apartment and refused to leave regardless i would show up a hour later with 5 friends and we would all be wielding claw hammers and metal pipes, not even trying to be a tough guy but what the actual fuck do you expect to happen to you if you take someones home for hostage??
