  • I really wanted to give the Tidy Tracks a fair trial. Trix got the wheels clean, Tidy Tracks hardly made an impression. Just an update on my previous review because the press seems to like it.

The tidy track also has the abrasive black strips from 2 other videos I've seen

Yes. There are two types of strip supplied. A felt cleaning pad and an abrasive strip. Replacement strips are available.

Hi, yes its possible to rewheel the loco but this is a relatively old model and people replace the whole bogie and motor assembly with a better motor (and wheels). But you would really need to decide how much you value the body. Same for tender drives but they start at £60 or more and require building.

The non-powered car has wheels with the gear on the back but all metal - no tyre. These should therefore be available at low cost. The same wheels were used on many powered bogie locomotives.

You don't have to link the Trix cleaners together; so if the 100mm/4" brush does not reach both bogies, then the second brush can be put under the bogie (or tender) to provide the pickup.

Hi Tom, yes of course, I see what you mean. Each cleaner has independent pick up from the track

I use 2000 grit sandpaper to clean my wheels and rails.

Hi Bobbi. Well that is nice and fine so it shouldn't wear then away. The problems are ... turning wheels that are geared to the motor to clean all round if cleaning by hand .... cleaning free running wheels if using power to turn geared wheels!

Why was damage to the traction tyre avoided using the Trix cleaner I thought it would have ripped it to shreds

The tradition tyre was scrubbed clean and ruffed up a bit so that it had much better grip. After a while the tyre swells... residual oil? Then the tyre just falls off or perishes and splits. Oil and dirt far more of a problem for the river of the the than a bit of abrasion.

Should have used the scubbing black pads instead of the white softer cleaning pads. I bet that would have made a difference.

I can give them a try. I presume they come with the kit. I note that one of the re sellers 'gauge master, are marketing their own using conductive foam to provide power to the tyre rather than copper strips to provide power via the flange.

I bought a Tidy Track from a model show; the seller indicated that he used it, and that it was a useful tool.
I should have followed my inclination that it was not useful, and especially for the unpowered wheels.

The Gaugemaster version is still selling well and has many fans. Unpowered wheels are a problem for any wheel cleaner. I quite like the simplicity of a piece of kitchen paper placed over a section of track as a wheel cleaner.

do you know if its possible to remove those wheels with the traction tyres and replace them with the full metal ones?
    same for tender drive steams?

Nice review of the Peco wheel cleaning brush (PC40) in ua-cam.com/video/yGVOWXs71XA/v-deo.html
Also mentions cleaning the back of the wheels, where the pickups run.
But for a split pickup system like this, the two manual leads work very well.
I have the older version, which has a wider shorter brush, and can see that the new version is better.
It is also possible to get two brushes, to do both sides at once (like a manual Trix), but I suspect for those who cannot function with the two hands separately, and the scraper provides a useful alternative.

Researching, to see if I can get the long thin brush, I see Peco has now moved on to the PL-42, which is a pen-like brush for dealing with each wheel in turn.
Probably better for locos where the brake-rod kit has been installed...

Of course, if you choose a small (narrow) brass brush, no reason why you cannot electrify it to provide thei function.
Probably cheaper thatn from Peco, anyway! And get two, so when the Trix wears out, you can replace the brushes in it.

Hi Tom, thank you for your helpful comment. My attempt at a reply three years ago didn't work.

a bit of a pointless test if your using the non abrasive pads on the tidy trak surely - as the trix is a lot more abrasive than a non abrasive pad

Hi Sim, I have tried various pads with the tidy tracks. It still sits there. I'll sell it to you if you like, hardly used! Some people really like it. When I have wheels to clean I go straight for the Trix because it works so well for me with no faff.

The problem with Tidy Track is the wheel doesn’t get clean adjacent to the flange as the wheel is still on narrow brass track in the cleaner. Trix cleans the whole wheel including the flange, where Tidy Track only cleans the outer tread of the wheel
