Hello James, your observation brings to mind the term "Medical Necessity." A diagnostic test is medically necessary when required to answer a specific clinical question that can not be answered by other clinical indicators or diagnostic tests. I believe most LBP cases without signs or symptoms of neurologic insult can be adequately diagnosed without the utilization of MRI. My opinion based on over 35 years in practice.
Having offered my opinion, each physician has their own way of practicing and utilizes the tools which are best suited to their type of practice and clinical expertise. Thank you for your comment. DrC
