I seem to recall a version where Narcissus sees his reflection in water, falls in love with it, then leans over to get a better look and ends up falling into the water and drowns.
Narcissus = narcissist
I also read a version where he sits there so long that he turns into a tree instead of the flower sprouting from his blood. I did quite a bit of research and it seems that neither of these are based in actual mythology, but rather inspired by it.
@@JonSolo I heard one where he didn't actively kill himself, he just couldn't look away long enough to eat and wasted away into a flower.
That was the story told in grade school when self harm was a big no no to talk about.
@@janet6421 that's the version I heard. Along with Echo not dying in a forest, but climbing up to a cliff, or canyon, or the like (after his rejection) and crying out her heart over, and over until only her voice remained. Which was when the gods saw his egotism and zinged him.
@@janet6421 That's the version I heard too. Think I may have read it in Bulfinch's Mythology, but that was SO many years ago. And i heard that Echo pined away for Narcissus because he wouldn't (couldn't) reciprocate her love, and she wasted away leaving only her voice. Didnt hear anything about her being cursed to only repeat what others had said, though that does make sense.

@@aryadeepak8239 YASSSS. The narc in people came full frontal during the pandemic.
I seem to remember as a child learning about Greek Myths in school, and the reason Narcissus was punished for rejecting so many people is different from what is commonly believed. In the story I was taught, Aphrodite received so many prayers about Narcissus rejections that she sent Nemesis to investigate him. While investigating him, Nemesis fell in love with Narcissus too. She tried to approach him to declare her love and reveal she was a Goddess, Narcissus laughed at her saying that she was lying just to try to get into bed with him. In her sorrow at his rejection, Nemesis called out to Aphrodite telling her everything she had discovered including her own rejection. Aphrodite was angry that Narcissus had hurt so many people including a Goddess on a mission for her that she was the one who punished Narcissus.
Interesting.
@@CieJe.Alexander What is even more interesting is that Narcissus' father and Poseidon tried to get Zeus to punish Aphrodite for the punishment she gave Narcissus because it wasn't cleared with the other Gods. Zeus said no because he was angry with what happened to Echo. She was still one of his favorite mortals and because he couldn't reverse the punishment Hera gave Echo, he wanted Narcissus to be punished for breaking too many hearts.
@@CieJe.Alexander Interesting indeed
@@ladyoftheabyss13 correction;
Very Interesting!
There are so many variations, to wade thru.

@@CieJe.Alexander Just the textbook from when I was in grade school which was over 40 years ago.
This isn’t the version of the myth I heard. The way I heard it he died from either drowning or dehydration. The first one he drowned trying to kiss his reflection. In the second one he refused to drink from the water because the ripples ruined his reflection, so he just stared at himself until he died of dehydration.
i also heard the drowning one
I've heard both of those. I like the "ripple" story better because it makes more sense when you add the flower change aspect.
@@skyden24195 I’m also leaning towards the second version, since that makes the most sense overall. I just threw in the first version for the sake of being thorough.
A reply by Jon Solo says that he did not find this story in the actual mythology and seem to be just inspired by the original stories.

The thing about Narcissus is that, from the moment he was considered "legal" (which, let's not forget, was MUCH younger for Ancient Greece than it is for us today) he had people after him in a sexual way. It's really not surprising that he didn't want anything to do with any of them. I mean, look at Echo. He glances at her, gives her a greeting, and then she started feeling him up! No wonder the guy told her to get away. And, also, let's not forget that people in Ancient Greece (especially deities) had a really hard time recognizing the word "no," or even grasping it as a concept. I never saw his constant rejection of suitors as him saying, "Oh, I'm too good for you," but more as, "Great good gods! What does it take to get you people to leave me alone?!" So, his story always struck me as more of a tragedy than anything.
For real. So many ancient Greek stories have to do with beautiful people being punished for turning someone down. And in general there's so much kidnapping, rape, and incest (often maternal or paternal) amongst the characters, it's no surprise Narcissus wanted nothing to do with them
@@Niop_Tres If no one is good enough, you don't want anyone.
i suppose that how greek society was, someone found you attractive it is your duty to put out on the spot
Echo wasn’t trying to feel him up. Read a book and look more into it. She was cursed by Hera to repeat the last word of every sentence spoken by the other person. She couldn’t say what was actually happening to her at the time and he looked at her crazy. They’re both a tragedy if anything. Just read into Echo.
@@elyonkris9999 Excuse me. I have read into Echo. In some of her myths she pines after him from afar, but in a good bit of them she runs up to him and starts hugging and kissing him. Edith Hamilton is not the only source of ancient Greed myth.
Interesting that Echo gets sympathy because Narcissus rejected her, but Echo definitely didn't have Narcissus' consent before she started feeling all up on him and didn't even know him. He was a jerk, but if somebody who was watching and following me without me knowing popped out of nowhere and started touching me because they "loved" me, I can't say I'd react much differently.

The story of Narcissus goes back to all those life lesson fables again, don't put people on a pedestal or else they turn out like Narcissus, and don't love yourself too much that you become a shallow and arrogant jerk. (For which the universe will punish you for, apparently.)
Yes, yes, yes.
Don't be a simp, girl it
Honestly the fact that a lot of characters turn into flowers when they die in Greek myths is likely due to Persephone since she was a spring goddess who became the underworld queen.
I never thought of that but it does make a lot of sense, and she’s sweet and romantic enough to do it. This is my new head canon.

In Stephen Fry's 'Heroes', the story made me feel quite sad for Narcissus. Fry described him to be more bewildered and uncomfortable at all the advances, and rejects each one because he sees it as unwarented infatuation. When the lad who committed suicide does what he does, Narcissus is genuinely horrified. When he rejects Echo, it's out of dispare because all his life he's had every single person he's ever met become infatuated. Poor lad can't have had many friends.
The version I remember hearing is when his mom got the seers prediction when he was a baby she freaked out and hid every reflective thing from him as he grew up until one day he sees his reflection in the lake and couldn't pull himself away thus dies and becomes the flower
See how the genders have flipped whos protecting their purity and who's the incel
My father introduced me to Greek mythology as a kid. I read it all I could. So when I was in school and we would read about one of the characters, often I was the only one who knew the endings and surrounding storyline. Including the teachers I still love mythology of all kinds, and this series feels tailored to my love of mythology.
That was literally me
I remember we read the myth with Dadalues and Perdix and instead of pushing him off the Parthenon Dadalues was just impressed with the saw. It annoying me so much.

You never know. Maybe Narcissus was worshipping the porcelain god. 😉
The story of Narcissus has always left a bad taste in my mouth. It felt like he was being punished for not wanting a relationship and settling for someone who didn’t make him happy.
nobody could make him happy but himself lol
@@nonsodrake8585 truly a dangerous message we must protect the youth from
Here’s a what if AU for you: what if Narcissus and Echo were in fact deeply in love but Narcissus only played the part of a pompous jerk to tip people off because he knew how desired he was and feared for his beloved. After Echo was punished, Narcissus insists they can still make it work, but when Nemesis, who also had a crush on the guy, had to fake being disgusted with Echo to save her life. Nemesis was still ticked off and cursed Echo into transforming into a lake. The same lake Narcissus finds and sees Echo in the surface of the water, but because of their love he is the only one who can see her and this is why people assumed he fell in love with himself. After a long time of only communicating via a body of water Narcissus finally decides to join Echo and jumps into the water to be with her, drowning and their love is what creates the flower that leans over the water, named after Echo’s beloved.

Eh you should probably take that with a grain of salt as basically every greek myth has this one dude who's said to be THE most beautiful/handsome human alive so there's probably a lot more then just Adonis
The myth I first learned was that he drowned trying to reach his reflection.
I also always saw him as aromatic &/or asexual. Dude just didnt wanna boink. And as we all know, the Greeks and Romans were all about those sexy sexy tales.
Not smashing is looked down upon even in our generation. It would be great if we changed the term Narcissus(loves himself) to Narcissus(One that doesn't want to smash)
it wasn't that he didn't wanna smash it was because he thought that he was to beautiful and awesome to smash hence why his name "Narcissus" became a term for people who are extremely vain and self absorbed aka Narcissists plus he rejected them really harshly in one version of the story he told one of his suitors to go kill themselves so yeah, not exactly the nicest guy around

But I remember reading both versions of his story falling in love with his own reflection compared to his lose of his sister driving his to keep looking at his own reflection till he dies.
Hearing the story today of women's purity and also incels.i see how genders have flipped
Congratulations. You’ve created a nice niche for yourself. Love how much information you are able to squeeze into each & every video. You always find elements rarely covered.
The real question is how did it take him so long in his life to come across his own reflection?
Seeing as he has zero issue drinking out of a pond, he's probably seen himself pretty often. He just fell in love with it this time because he was cursed.
The version I read had Echo following Narcissus after fading in to nothing but her voice. So when Narcissus found his reflection, he started talking to it, and Echo would answer back, so he thought his reflection was a shy water nymph.
I took a Greek Mythology course in college and have always been interested in myths. So, I did know the basics of Narcissus. I had heard the version with Echo. But I really enjoy that you go through and do all the research for all the various stories.

The version I was familiar with went a little differently. It started the same way, but Echo doesn't waste away before Narcissus falls for his reflection. It ends with Narcissus and Echo wasting away together, him professing his love to his reflection repeatedly and Echo...well...echoing all the loving words. Yeah, I've unfortunately had to study the psychological trait of narcissism and ironically the eponymous Narcissus's character has only a supeficial similarity to the character of somebody who would be considered a narcissist. He may have been wasting his own time preoccupied with something that didn't exist but he wasn't a mass-murdering maniac like a true narcissist.
Narcissists aren't mass murderers. Please stop spreading misinformation. So many people are being hurt by narcissists, it's important that those who wonder if they're sharing their life with one aren't being misled into thinking they're not.
Damn it Gunther is too cute, I had to re watch a few parts

I hate to be “that” person, but Narcissus didn’t fall in love with himself. When he looked into the water, ripples distorted his reflection, making it appear that the person in the water had long hair. He thought it was a beautiful water nymph. And when he cried out to “her”, it was Echo who answered, so he thought the nymph was answering him. When he reached for the water, and the image disappeared, he thought it was the nymph being afraid, and he stayed by the water hoping one day she would return his love.
Nice. Nice people all around.
Where did you here this story from?
